Skellefteå is a coastal town in northern Västerbotten with one of the world’s tallest timber buildings, a 17th-century church town by the river and, by its own count, the longest coastline of any Swedish municipality. Here is how to get there without a train, and what is worth your day.
When you need this
You are driving or bussing the coast between Umeå and Luleå and wondering whether to stop. You are trying to reach a town that has no railway station. You have a ticket for an event at Sara kulturhus, or you want to see the timber tower for its own sake. Or you have one free summer day and need to choose between the old parish center by the river and a day on the coast at Bjuröklubb.
Skellefteå in three places
Skellefteå municipality had 75,405 residents at the end of 2025, according to Statistics Sweden (SCB) — down 2,745 from 78,150 a year earlier. Older guides that describe a fast-growing town of nearly 80,000 are out of date. The municipality covers about 6,853 km² of land, so “Skellefteå” on a map can mean a village far from the town.
For a visitor it comes down to three places:
| Place | What it is |
|---|---|
| The town center | Sara kulturhus, the bus station and Guldtorget square with the Tourist Center, all within a few hundred meters |
| Nordanå and the river | The free Skellefteå museum, an open-air museum, the church town Bonnstan, Landskyrkan church and the Lejonströmsbron wooden bridge |
| The coast | Bjuröklubb nature reserve, the church town at Lövånger, and lighthouse islands reached by boat |
As a destination, Skellefteå is part of the Swedish Lapland brand, although it sits on the coast far from the mountains. It is also one of the municipalities in the Sámi administrative area, where Sámi language rights with the municipality apply.
Getting there without a train
This is the first thing to get right: Skellefteå has no passenger trains. The North Bothnia Line (Norrbotniabanan), a new coastal railway from Umeå to Luleå, is under construction, and Trafikverket’s current timetable puts Umeå–Skellefteå at 2036. Until then you fly or take a bus.
By air: Skellefteå Airport is about 17 km from the center, according to Visit Skellefteå, the town’s destination company. On the day we checked, its departures board showed SAS and Norwegian flights to Stockholm Arlanda and Ryanair to Gdańsk. The domestic flights guide covers who flies where, and the regional airports guide compares the bus and taxi set-up at each airport.
The airport bus (flygbuss) is run by Skellefteå’s town-bus operator and is timed to scheduled flights:
- It leaves Torget/Kanalgatan in the center 1 hour 15 minutes before each scheduled departure and takes about 23 minutes.
- If your outbound flight is delayed, the bus still leaves on its normal time.
- If an arriving flight is late, the bus waits; if the flight is cancelled, its bus does not run.
- Charter flights have no bus connection, so plan a taxi.
- It is cashless: buy in the app or pay by card on board.
By train and bus: book a train to Bastuträsk, Jörn or Umeå and continue by bus. From Bastuträsk, Länstrafiken’s regular line 260 meets trains, takes about 50 minutes and waits at most 10 minutes for a delayed train. From Umeå the bus takes about two hours. All of these end at Skellefteå bus station, about 250 m from Sara kulturhus. The trains in northern Sweden guide explains Norrtåg and the inland line, and the night-train guide covers sleepers from Stockholm. Plan the whole chain in Resrobot, the national journey planner.
Getting around
The center is walkable: the bus station, Sara kulturhus and Guldtorget are close together, and the old parish center at Nordanå lies along the north bank of the Skellefte River west of the center.
Town buses (Skellefteå Lokaltrafik) are cashless:
- In the app: cheaper, and the ticket includes 90 minutes of free transfers.
- By card on board: dearer, and with no transfer. American Express, Diners, Maestro and Visa Electron are not accepted.
- Children: two children under 7 travel free with a paying passenger.
Visit Skellefteå runs the Skellefteå Tourist Center at the southwest corner of Guldtorget, Nygatan 42G, open Monday to Friday 10–18 and Saturday 11–15. Sara kulturhus’s own FAQ still gives an older address on Trädgårdsgatan; go to Guldtorget. The center sells event tickets and fishing permits and takes cards.
Sara kulturhus
Sara kulturhus is the reason many people stop. It is 20 storeys and some 80 meters tall, built of glulam and cross-laminated timber from forests within about 60 km of the town — around 12,200 m³ of wood in all — and it opened in 2021. It is named after the author Sara Lidman.
Inside are the city library, Västerbottensteatern (the regional theater), Skellefteå konsthall, Museum Anna Nordlander’s exhibitions and a hotel. Museum Anna Nordlander holds a large exhibition in the house’s exhibition hall every spring.
| Part of the house | Hours (checked 2026-10-15) |
|---|---|
| North and south entrances, exhibition hall | Monday–Friday 10–18, Saturday–Sunday 10–16; open longer during events |
| City library (west entrance) | Monday–Thursday 10–20, Friday 10–18, Saturday–Sunday 10–16 |
The library is closed on 22 and 31 October 2026 and open 10–15 on 30 October.
What to do there:
- Take the guided tour: public tours start at 13:00 at the foot of the Kulturtrappan staircase by the south entrance, last about 45 minutes and run in Swedish and English. Dates are in Sara’s event calendar.
- Look up in the south foyer: “A Heart of Wood”, a moving installation hanging over the staircase, shows the building’s energy system at work.
- Feel the wood: heavy concrete slabs on floors 19 and 20 damp the sway in strong winds; the operator says slight movement up top is normal for a tall wooden building.
House rules: Sara is cash-free, and only assistance dogs are allowed inside. Event tickets are sold online through each organizer and, for most events, at the Tourist Center. For access, there are four entrances; the north one has a wheelchair ramp, the elevator to floors 2–20 is by the south entrance, accessible toilets are on every floor, and hearing-assistance receivers are lent at all stages.
Nordanå, Bonnstan and the wooden bridge
West of the center, the old parish center of Skellefteå lines the river. The whole stretch from Nordanå park to Lejonström is a riksintresse, a heritage area of national interest, and most of it is free and outdoors.
| Site | What you see |
|---|---|
| Skellefteå museum | Always free; closed Mondays, Tuesday 10–19, Wednesday–Sunday 10–16 |
| Open-air museum, Nordanå | Historic timber buildings; the houses open in summer only (closed for 2026, reopening summer 2027) |
| Bonnstan | The church town: 116 houses with almost 400 chambers |
| Landskyrkan | The parish church, rebuilt in neoclassical style and inaugurated in 1800; home of the medieval Skellefte Madonna |
| Lejonströmsbron | A wooden bridge finished in 1737, listed since 1994 |
Bonnstan is a kyrkstad, a church town: rows of small wooden cottages where families from distant villages stayed overnight for Sunday church, under the church-attendance rule of 1681. It burned in 1835 and was rebuilt; it has been protected since 1982. The chambers are privately owned and still used, especially in summer, when Bonnstan holds a midsummer celebration and markets and historical walks run from spring to autumn. Walk the lanes, but stay out of the yards. The church towns guide explains how kyrkstäder worked across the north.
Lejonströmsbron is often called Sweden’s oldest wooden bridge. Skellefteå museum’s own wording is different: it is Sweden’s longest preserved wooden bridge. It was finished in 1737, destroyed by the spring flood of 1772 and rebuilt, and in 1809 it was the scene of a battle against Russian troops.
Practicalities for the museum: the floors cannot take ice cleats or walking poles, so leave them at the door. There is a ramp at the main entrance, a lift and an accessible toilet with a changing table. Over the holidays it closes on 31 October, 24, 25, 26 and 31 December 2026, and 1 and 6 January 2027. The Exploratoriet science center is in the same area.
The coast
Visit Skellefteå says the municipality has the longest coastline of any in Sweden, about 531 km of cliffs, bays and beaches. Three places make a good day.
Bjuröklubb nature reserve is the highlight. Turn off the E4 near Lövånger and follow the signs about 20 km. The 919-hectare reserve has:
- a lighthouse 47 m above the sea, reached by a 225 m wooden ramp suitable for wheelchairs, walkers and prams;
- three marked trails of 0.3, 2.4 and 6.2 km;
- Storsand, Västerbotten’s longest sandy beach;
- a chapel built in 1864;
- a free, unbookable sauna at the guest harbor, open roughly mid-May to mid-October.
Bjuröklubb is a nature reserve, so its regulations are binding law, not etiquette. Dogs must be leashed, fires are allowed only at marked places, tents and caravans only at designated sites, and vehicles stay on designated roads and parking. Disturbing wildlife — for example close-up photography of nests — and damaging trees or vegetation are banned. The nature reserves guide explains how reserve rules override allemansrätten.
Lövånger, on the way, has a church town of 117 cottages around a stone church from the early 1500s. Unlike Bonnstan, it is one of the few church towns where you can sleep in a cottage; they are rented out.
The islands need a boat. Pite-Rönnskär, with a 37 m lighthouse, is reached in summer by boat taxi from Kinnbäck harbor north of Byske; book with the operator. Kåge harbor is the largest guest harbor on this coast — see the guest harbors guide if you arrive by your own boat, and the lighthouse stays guide for sleeping in one.
Seasons
Summer is when Skellefteå is most alive: the open-air museum opens, Bonnstan fills up and the Bjuröklubb sauna is warm. From roughly the Dalälven river northwards, which includes Skellefteå, it never gets fully dark around midsummer — see the midnight sun guide. It can also be hot: SMHI, the Swedish weather service, recorded 33.6 °C at Skellefteå airport on 24 July 2025.
Spring is migration season at Bjuröklubb: raptors, cranes, geese and songbirds pass the lighthouse in April, and sea birds stream past the Grundskatan point from early May.
Winter means darkness and snow. Aurora chances are best in Norrland in the winter half-year on dark, clear nights — the northern lights guide explains the odds. Vitberget, 2 km from the center, has lit and unlit ski trails and a downhill slope; the lit trails guide explains how elljusspår work.
Mistakes to avoid
- Searching for a train station. There is none; change to a bus at Bastuträsk, Jörn or Umeå.
- Carrying only cash. Buses and Sara kulturhus take cards and apps only.
- Waiting for a delayed flight before catching the airport bus. It leaves on schedule.
- Trying doors in Bonnstan. The cottages are private; Lövånger is where you can stay in one.
- Planning the museum on a Monday. It is closed.
- Letting the dog run at Bjuröklubb. Loose dogs break the reserve regulations.
- Going to the old tourist-office address. The Tourist Center is on Guldtorget.
