Landing at a Swedish regional airport is easy. Getting the last few kilometers into town is where visitors get stuck: a bus that takes no cash, one that leaves without waiting for your delayed flight, or one that was cancelled years ago.
When you need this
You’ve booked a domestic flight to Visby, Luleå, Umeå, Östersund, Skellefteå, Sundsvall, Växjö, Kalmar or Ronneby, and you want to know what happens after you collect your bag. Maybe you land late, or you only have cash, or no Swedish apps on your phone yet. Or an older guide lists an airport bus you can’t find on any timetable.
This page covers the arrival end. For who flies where and whether the train is the better choice, start with domestic flights in Sweden. Kiruna has its own guide: flying to Kiruna and Swedish Lapland.
Who runs which airport
Sweden’s airports come in two kinds, and it affects what information you’ll find.
- Swedavia, the state airport company, runs ten airports. It calls seven of them regional: Kiruna, Luleå, Umeå, Åre Östersund, Visby, Ronneby and Malmö. Swedavia’s English site has bus, taxi and directions pages for each of them we checked.
- About 32 non-state airports, from Pajala in the north to Kristianstad in the south, are owned by municipalities and regions. Skellefteå, Sundsvall Timrå, Växjö Småland and Kalmar Öland are among them, and their ground-transport pages are in Swedish.
Two of Swedavia’s airports double as military airfields. At Ronneby the land belongs to Fortifikationsverket, the state fortifications agency, Swedavia runs the civil station, and the Armed Forces hold the airfield. Luleå-Kallax has the same kind of state control.
The structure may change. A government inquiry, SOU 2026:60, published on 30 September 2026, proposes that the state take over nine more regional airports. It is a proposal, not a decision.
Airport by airport
Most regional airports are close to town. Ground transport is usually an ordinary local bus run by the county’s public transport, not a dedicated airport coach.
| Airport | Distance or time to town | Bus | Timed to flights? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visby (Gotland) | 3.5 km | Line 61, about 10 min, all year | Not stated |
| Umeå | About 4 km | Line 80 (Ultra) | Not stated |
| Luleå | About 7 km | Lines 4 and 104 | Not stated |
| Åre Östersund | About 10 min by road | Line 4, about 30 min | No |
| Ronneby | About 8 km from Ronneby | Coach to central Karlskrona | Not stated |
| Kiruna | — | Airport bus | Yes |
| Skellefteå | — | Airport bus | Yes, to departures |
| Sundsvall Timrå | — | None | — |
| Växjö Småland | Just over 10 min by road | Line 4 to Växjö Resecentrum | Not stated |
| Kalmar Öland | About 5 km | Line 402, every 20 min | Not stated |
A few notes the table can’t hold:
- Luleå: line 104 continues past the centre to the bus and train stations, so take it if you are connecting to a train. Line 4 heads on toward the university.
- Åre Östersund: the airport’s address is on Frösön, about ten minutes by road from Östersund. Line 4 runs to its own timetable and Swedavia says plainly that it does not follow flights.
- Kalmar: line 402 reaches Kalmar Central in about 13 minutes. More in our Kalmar guide.
- Växjö: its Stockholm route goes to Bromma, not Arlanda. Växjö is the exception to “nearly everything goes via Arlanda”. See Bromma airport for the Stockholm end.
- Skellefteå: the airport bus connects with SAS and Norwegian departures to Arlanda, and with Ryanair’s flight to Gdańsk.
Sundsvall Timrå: no airport bus
The dedicated airport buses between Sundsvall and Sundsvall Timrå Airport stopped on 19 June 2013. Older guides still list them. What remains is a regional bus from Sundsvall to the Deltavägen stop, about 40 minutes, and then about a kilometer on foot to the arrivals hall. With luggage, a taxi or a hire car is simpler.
Paying for the bus
This is where visitors are most often caught out. Most airport buses take no cash.
| Airport | How to pay |
|---|---|
| Visby | Card only on the bus, or buy online or in the app first |
| Luleå | Card or bus card; no cash. App tickets must be bought and activated before boarding |
| Umeå | Ultra app, tabussen.nu, service points, or card on board |
| Åre Östersund | Länstrafiken Jämtland app or card on board |
| Växjö | Länstrafiken Kronoberg app, at city-bus fares |
| Ronneby | Card, Swish or cash — the exception |
The fare is the county’s normal public-transport fare, set locally. A contactless bank card covers you almost everywhere. If you’d rather use an app, download the county’s one before you fly: Ultra in Umeå, Luleå Lokaltrafik, Länstrafiken Jämtland or Länstrafiken Kronoberg. For the county systems in general, see paying for buses in Sweden.
Taxis
Taxis wait right outside arrivals at the Swedavia airports. Swedavia’s guidance is the same at each one:
- You can choose any car, not just the first in line. Pricing is open, so companies set their own fares.
- Every company shows a comparison price (jämförpris) on a yellow label, based on a typical 10 km, 15-minute trip. Compare before you get in.
- Ask for a fixed price (fast pris). If you agree one, it must show on the meter before the trip starts.
Skellefteå’s airport adds a practical tip: taxi firms there often quote a fixed price, but always ask before setting off. Some airports also let you book a flygtaxi, a shared flight taxi booked together with your ticket. Ask your airline. For more on Swedish taxis, see taxis in Sweden.
Kiruna’s terminal opens about an hour before the first departure and closes about 30 minutes after the last arrival. It is no place to wait overnight.
Åre and the mountains
Åre Östersund Airport is about an hour from Åre by road, and no public airport bus goes there. Swedavia points to pre-bookable taxi or bus transfers to the ski resorts. Book them before you fly, especially in ski season. Bus line 4 only goes to Östersund centre. A hire car is the other option: see renting a car in Sweden, and for the resort itself, our Åre ski guide.
The small planes: state-procured routes
Below the city airports sits a third layer. Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, buys flights to small towns that no airline serves commercially. These are flown in small turboprops — Fokker 50s and Beechcraft — and several are multi-stop lines:
| Route | Operator | Aircraft |
|---|---|---|
| Hemavan–Arvidsjaur–Vilhelmina–Lycksele–Arlanda | Amapola | Fokker 50 |
| Gällivare–Kramfors–Arlanda | Amapola | Fokker 50 |
| Sveg–Mora–Arlanda | Jonair | Beechcraft 1900 |
| Torsby–Hagfors–Arlanda | Jonair | Beechcraft 200 |
| Pajala–Luleå | Jonair | Beechcraft 200 |
| Östersund–Umeå | Jonair | Beechcraft 200 |
Two practical consequences. Your Arlanda flight may land somewhere else first. And on an aircraft this size, pack light and soft.
What changes in October 2027
All of these contracts end on 26 October 2027. Trafikverket sent its inquiry for the next period, to October 2031, out for consultation in March 2026. It treats seven routes as essential: Gällivare, Arvidsjaur, Lycksele, Hemavan, Vilhelmina and Sveg to Arlanda, plus Pajala–Luleå. It questions the Torsby, Hagfors, Mora and Kramfors lines, and it will propose ending the special assignment that keeps Östersund–Umeå flying. Nothing is decided yet. If your trip is in late 2027, check the route before you plan around it.

FAQ
How do I get from Visby airport into town?
Take bus line 61, which serves Visby Airport year-round and reaches central Visby in about 10 minutes. On the bus you can pay only by card, so buy a ticket in the operator’s app or online first if you have no card. The airport is 3.5 km from the centre, so a taxi is a short ride too.
Can I pay cash on Swedish airport buses?
Mostly no. Visby’s bus takes only card on board, Luleå’s buses take no cash, and Umeå’s and Östersund’s buses sell tickets in an app or by card. Ronneby’s airport coach to Karlskrona is the exception, taking card, Swish or cash. Carry a contactless bank card or download the county’s transport app before you fly.
Does the airport bus wait for delayed flights?
Only at some airports. Kiruna’s bus is timed to every arrival and departure, and Skellefteå’s connects with flights to Arlanda and Gdańsk. Åre Östersund’s line 4 runs to its own timetable and says it does not follow flights. Elsewhere, check the timetable and plan a taxi for a late or delayed arrival.
How do I get from Åre Östersund Airport to Åre?
Åre is about an hour from the airport by road. Swedavia points travelers to pre-bookable taxi or bus transfers to the ski resorts; book before you fly. Bus line 4 only goes to Östersund centre, about 30 minutes away. Hire cars and taxis are the alternatives.
Is there an airport bus at Sundsvall Timrå?
No. The dedicated airport buses between Sundsvall and the airport stopped on 19 June 2013. A regional bus from Sundsvall reaches the Deltavägen stop in about 40 minutes, and from there it is about a kilometre on foot to the arrivals hall. Otherwise, plan a taxi or a hire car.
Which Swedish airports are run by the state?
Swedavia, the state airport company, runs ten: Arlanda, Bromma and Landvetter as international airports, and Kiruna, Luleå, Umeå, Åre Östersund, Visby, Ronneby and Malmö as regional ones. About 32 others, including Skellefteå, Sundsvall Timrå, Växjö and Kalmar, are owned by municipalities and regions. A September 2026 inquiry proposed expanding state ownership; no decision yet.
What are the small planes to Hemavan or Arvidsjaur?
They are state-procured routes, bought by Trafikverket because no airline would fly them commercially. Amapola flies Hemavan, Arvidsjaur, Vilhelmina and Lycksele to Arlanda in Fokker 50s on one multi-stop line. All current contracts run until 26 October 2027, and Trafikverket is reviewing which lines continue.
