The night train gets you north. Norrtåg moves you around once you’re there: along the High Coast, from Umeå to Luleå, up the iron-ore line to Kiruna and across to Finland. Here is how the network works, and what changed in the last year.
When you need this
You’re planning a car-free trip along Sweden’s north coast: Sundsvall, the High Coast, Örnsköldsvik, Umeå. Or you’ve stepped off the night train in Umeå or Luleå and need the next leg. Or you want to get from Luleå to Kiruna by day, or carry on into Finland now that trains cross the border again at Haparanda.
You also need it if you’re reading an older guide that says you can pay the conductor. That stopped in December 2025.
Buy before you board: the change older guides miss
Since 14 December 2025 you cannot buy a Norrtåg ticket on the train. Norrtåg was one of the last Swedish train companies still selling on board. It stopped on the day VR, the Finnish state railway, took over running the trains. On the same day Norrtåg moved ticket sales to its own new website and app.
Buy your ticket at norrtag.se, through Norrtåg’s customer service or from a sales partner. The conductor can no longer sell you one, so buy it on your phone before the doors close. The good news is that buying early costs nothing. Single tickets bought on norrtag.se can be cancelled for a full refund until the train leaves, and Norrtåg says its own site always has the lowest price on its own trains.
There are no rebookable tickets. To change departure, cancel the old ticket where you bought it, before departure, and buy a new one.
The six Norrtåg lines
Norrtåg (“North train”) is the regional train brand of Sweden’s four northernmost regions: Jämtland, Västernorrland, Västerbotten and Norrbotten. It runs on about 1,500 km of mostly single-track railway, serving 57 stations with about 96 departures every weekday. VR Sverige has driven and staffed the trains since December 2025, on a ten-year contract.
| Line | What it’s for | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Sundsvall–Örnsköldsvik–Umeå | The coast and the High Coast, via the Bothnia Line | About 3 h end to end |
| Sundsvall–Östersund–Åre–Storlien | Jämtland and the mountains | About 2 h 20 min to Östersund |
| Umeå–Vännäs–Vindeln–Hällnäs | Commuter line inland from Umeå | About 1 h to Hällnäs |
| Umeå–Luleå | The two university cities, via the inland route | About 3 h 40 min |
| Luleå–Kiruna | The iron-ore line to Gällivare and Kiruna | About 3 h 45 min |
| Luleå–Haparanda | Kalix, Haparanda and the Finnish border | About 1 h 52 min |
Boden is the northern hub. The Umeå, Kiruna and Haparanda lines all meet there, so changing at Boden often saves you a detour into Luleå. There is no through train from Sundsvall to Kiruna: that trip is three Norrtåg lines, with changes at Umeå and at Boden or Luleå. Plan the whole chain in one search, in Norrtåg’s trip search (Sök resa) or in Resrobot, the national journey planner.
The long lines north of Umeå are thin. In the 2025–26 timetable there were three round trips a weekday between Umeå and Luleå, and three between Luleå and Kiruna. Missing one can cost you half a day.
On the Jämtland line, the line page also lists Norwegian stops to Trondheim. Check in the trip search whether your departure runs through or needs a change at Storlien.
The Bothnia Line: the fast way along the coast
The Bothnia Line (Botniabanan) is about 190 km of electrified single track from Nyland, north of Kramfors, via Örnsköldsvik to Umeå. It opened in late August 2010 after eleven years of building, and it is what makes the coastal Sundsvall–Umeå line possible.
Norrtåg trains from Sundsvall first follow the older Ådalsbanan (Ådal Line) through Timrå, Härnösand and Kramfors, then continue on the Bothnia Line. The whole trip takes about three hours, and Umeå–Örnsköldsvik about 70 minutes. For visitors this is the High Coast line: Härnösand, Kramfors and Örnsköldsvik all have stations. In 2026 it carried 13 round trips a weekday, the busiest of Norrtåg’s long lines.
The North Bothnia Line: not before 2036
Its sequel, the North Bothnia Line (Norrbotniabanan), will be a new 270 km coastal railway from Umeå via Skellefteå and Piteå to Luleå. It is being built, but it is nowhere near ready for passengers. Trafikverket’s current timetable puts Umeå–Skellefteå at 2036, and gives no date at all for Skellefteå–Luleå. Older planning material gave earlier years, so be wary of any page that promises a train to Skellefteå soon.
Until then, Skellefteå and Piteå have no passenger trains. Norrtåg’s Umeå–Luleå trains take the inland route via Vindeln, Bastuträsk, Jörn and Älvsbyn. For the coast towns in between, take a bus and plan it in Resrobot.
Tickets, discounts and Interrail
Norrtåg’s fares are simple once you know the rules:
- Children: up to two children under 16 ride free with a paying adult; add them when you book.
- Discounts: child, youth, student, senior and pensioner single tickets are 25% off. Students and pensioners must show a valid card or certificate to the conductor, plus photo ID.
- Interrail and Eurail: valid on every Norrtåg train, with no reservation needed or sold. Activate the train in the Rail Planner app before boarding, so it shows under “My Pass” as a QR code. Carry your passport.
- County passes: a Länstrafiken or Din Tur product valid on Norrtåg can be topped up with a single ticket for the part it doesn’t cover. Show both.
- SJ annual cards need the Resplus add-on to be valid on Norrtåg.
Connecting to SJ? Buy one Resplus ticket. Norrtåg’s network ends at Sundsvall in the south, so most trips from Stockholm involve a change at Sundsvall or Umeå, or the night train to Umeå or Luleå. If you buy the whole trip in one purchase, it is covered by Resplus, the national through-ticket scheme. If a delay then breaks your connection, you are helped on to your destination. Buy the legs separately and a late Norrtåg train that makes you miss your SJ train is your problem.
Norrtåg normally releases tickets two to three months ahead. In October 2026, tickets were already on sale up to 26 April 2027, covering Christmas, the sports holidays and Easter.
On board: free seating, one class
Norrtåg has no first or second class and no seat reservations: you take any free seat. A few more things to know:
| On board | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Food and drink | A service compartment on the longer lines sells hot meals, sandwiches, coffee, beer and wine, paid by card or Swish. The Umeå–Vännäs–Hällnäs trains have none |
| Wi-Fi and power | Free Wi-Fi on all trains; power sockets on every train |
| Luggage | No checked baggage: everything stays with you. Skis count as hand luggage if packed or tied together |
| Dogs | Up to two dogs per traveller, free and without notice, in the marked pet section. Guide and assistance dogs may go anywhere |
| Bikes | One ordinary bike free per traveller, three places per train, not bookable, max 30 kg. No tandems or trailers |
| Step-free access | Most trains have low-floor entry. On the older Regina trains used north of Umeå, one door has a wheelchair lift. Pre-register a wheelchair with customer service |
Replacement buses may not carry your bike when you travel. Norrtåg advises a folding bike, or a bike packed as special luggage, if you need to be sure.
Arriving in Kiruna? The station lies about 6 km from the town centre, and a free shuttle bus meets every train.
Trains to Finland via Haparanda
Since 10 August 2026 you can cross into Finland by train. That day the first regular VR passenger train since 1988 reached Haparanda. Norrtåg runs from Luleå and Boden to Haparanda, where VR trains continue to Tornio, Kemi and Oulu, with connections towards Helsinki. Tornio is about 8 minutes from Haparanda, and Oulu about 1 h 35–40 min.
It is two operators and two tickets. Buy the Swedish leg on norrtag.se and the Finnish leg on vr.fi. Resplus does not join them. Finland is one hour ahead, and each ticket shows local time: Haparanda times are Swedish, Tornio and Oulu times Finnish. Misread them and you miss the connection. Haparanda has free long-term parking at the station.
The Haparanda line itself only reopened to passengers on 1 April 2021, after closing in 1992.
Delays, track works and winter
Single track and Arctic winters make delays likelier here than in southern Sweden. Norrtåg said itself that its trains did not deliver as they should in several places in winter 2025–26, and it is adding five more trains in autumn 2026.
- Track works: in 2026, Trafikverket’s works on Malmbanan (the Iron Ore Line) shifted Norrtåg times north of Umeå between May and October, and buses can replace trains. Search your trip close to departure.
- Disruption alerts: Norrtåg’s app and website show departures, replacement buses and planned works. Ticket buyers also get text messages about disruptions.
- The December 2026 timetable: Norrtåg has applied for a fourth daily Umeå–Luleå–Kiruna round trip and hourly Umeå–Sundsvall trains from 13 December 2026. It has also asked for better connections to the night trains at Umeå and to Finnish night trains at Haparanda. Trafikverket sets the final timetable, so treat these as proposals until you see them in the trip search.

FAQ
Can you buy a Norrtåg ticket on the train?
No. Norrtåg stopped selling tickets on board on 14 December 2025, when VR took over operating the trains. Buy before departure at norrtag.se, through Norrtåg’s customer service or from a sales partner. Single tickets bought on norrtag.se can be cancelled for a full refund until the train leaves, so buying early costs you nothing if plans change.
Does Interrail work on Norrtåg trains?
Yes. Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on every Norrtåg regional train, and no seat reservation is needed or sold. Before boarding, activate the train in the Rail Planner app so it appears under “My Pass” as a QR code, and show that code with your passport when the conductor checks tickets.
Is there a train between Luleå and Kiruna?
Yes. Norrtåg ran three round trips a weekday between Luleå and Kiruna in the 2025–26 timetable, via Boden and Gällivare, taking about 3 hours 45 minutes. SJ’s Stockholm night train also covers the line. Norrtåg has applied for a fourth daily round trip from 13 December 2026, but Trafikverket sets the final timetable.
Can I take the train from Sweden to Finland?
Yes, since 10 August 2026. Norrtåg runs from Luleå and Boden to Haparanda, where VR trains continue to Tornio, Kemi and Oulu, with connections towards Helsinki. You need two tickets: Norrtåg’s from norrtag.se and VR’s from vr.fi. Finland is one hour ahead, and each ticket shows local time.
What is the Bothnia Line?
The Bothnia Line, or Botniabanan, is a 190 km electrified single-track railway from Nyland, north of Kramfors, via Örnsköldsvik to Umeå, opened in 2010. Norrtåg’s Sundsvall–Umeå trains use it after the older Ådalsbanan, calling at Härnösand, Kramfors and Örnsköldsvik. The whole Sundsvall–Umeå trip takes about three hours.
When will the North Bothnia Line open?
Not soon. The Norrbotniabanan, a new 270 km coastal line from Umeå to Luleå via Skellefteå and Piteå, is under construction, and Trafikverket’s current timetable puts Umeå–Skellefteå at 2036, with no date yet for Skellefteå–Luleå. Until then Skellefteå and Piteå have no passenger trains, and Umeå–Luleå trains run inland.
Can I get from Stockholm to northern Sweden with Norrtåg?
Not all the way: Norrtåg’s network ends in Sundsvall in the south. Change to SJ or another operator at Sundsvall or Umeå, or take the night train from Stockholm to Umeå or Luleå. Book the whole trip in one purchase so it is covered by Resplus, which protects you if a delay breaks the connection.
