Umeå is a university city on a river, rebuilt with birch-lined streets after an 1888 fire, with two free museums and a ferry to Finland. This page gets you oriented, flags the traps, and sends you to the right in-depth guide.

When you need this

You are planning a first visit to Umeå, or breaking the long trip between Stockholm and Lapland. You are weighing the night train against a flight, or crossing the Kvarken strait to or from Vaasa in Finland. Or you want to know which museums are free, where to walk by the river, and what is open in winter versus only in summer.

The city in three places

Umeå had 135,273 residents at the turn of the year 2025/2026, 1,024 more than a year earlier, according to Umeå kommun. It is a university city on the Umeälven river, and together with Riga it was European Capital of Culture in 2014, under the theme “co-creation”.

For a visitor it comes down to three things close together:

The birches are the city’s signature, and they come from a disaster. The great town fire of 1888 destroyed every street planting from Renmarksbäcken in the west to Östra esplanaden. In the rebuilding, young birches from the surrounding countryside were planted about five meters apart, which is why Umeå is called björkarnas stad, the city of birches. The tree rows along the east–west streets have been a riksintresse, a site of national interest, since 1987.

Getting there

By air: Umeå Airport is one of the ten state airports run by Swedavia, about 4 km from the center. SAS and Norwegian both fly Stockholm–Umeå. Ultra’s airport bus, line 80, leaves from outside the terminal; you can buy the ticket in the Ultra app, on tabussen.nu, at a service point or by card on board. By night train: SJ runs a state-contracted night train between Stockholm and Umeå every day, with seats, couchettes and sleepers. Since 13 April 2026 it has been its own line, separate from the train to Luleå, Kiruna and Narvik, so it does not continue to Lapland. A new contract from December 2026 guarantees at least one daily round trip to Umeå through December 2028. The Lapland night-train guide covers berths and booking.

By regional train: Norrtåg, operated by VR since December 2025, runs from Umeå Östra toward Örnsköldsvik, Sundsvall, Boden, Luleå, Vindeln and Vännäs. Umeå has two stations, Umeå C and Umeå Östra, so read the station name on your ticket. The ferry to Vaasa

The ferry from Umeå crosses the Kvarken to Vaasa in Finland. It changed hands in 2026: Stena Line bought Wasaline, which now sails as “Wasaline, a Stena Line company” with its brand kept. Older guides show Wasaline alone.

The trap is the terminal: it is in Holmsund, not in the city, so foot passengers need to plan the transfer. Finland is one hour ahead of Sweden, and Vaasa departure times are Finnish time. Getting around

Umeå’s city buses are Ultra, Umeå’s public transport.

• On board: buy a single ticket with a debit or credit card. Cash is not accepted.
• In the app: the free Ultra app sells single, discount and period tickets and 24- and 72-hour tickets.
• Children: two children under seven travel free with a paying passenger.
• To Gammlia: take bus line 2 or 7 from the center.

On foot, the classic walk is the river loop. Walk west from the center, cross Lundabron to the Bölesholmarna islands, continue to Teg on the south bank, and return over Gamla bron, Umeå’s oldest bridge — about 4 km in all.

For a day out, Trafikverket’s free Holmöleden ferry runs 45 minutes from Norrfjärden, north of Umeå, to the island of Holmön. Some sailings must be called up in advance via the app; the road ferries guide covers the booking.

Free museums

Both of Umeå’s big museums are free, but they keep different days.

Bildmuseet closes on New Year’s Eve and Day, Midsummer Eve and Day, and Christmas Eve and Day, whatever the weekday. Its guided tours are in Swedish Wednesday to Friday and on Sundays, and in English on Saturdays.

Västerbottens museum stays open until 20:30 on one Wednesday a month, and from 6 September 2026 its Egilhallen opens on Sundays 12:00–16:00. The museum has hardened paths, an accessible toilet and a wheelchair to borrow. The Gammlia open-air museum, about 30 buildings moved from across Västerbotten, runs its programme in summer; the 2026 season has closed, but the grounds are open to the public at any hour.

Seasons: light nights and winter

Summer: from roughly the Dalälven river northward, which includes Umeå, it never gets fully dark around midsummer; dusk runs straight into dawn. The midnight sun guide explains the difference between light nights and true midnight sun further north.

Winter: SMHI, the Swedish weather service, says aurora chances are best in Norrland in the winter half-year, on dark, fairly clear nights. Umeå is in Norrland, so it happens, but the odds are higher around Kiruna — see the northern lights guide.

Umeå also works as a winter city:

• Skiing: the municipality’s floodlit tracks are lit from 06:00 until daylight and again from dusk, and switch off automatically between 22:00 and 23:00. The cross-country skiing guide covers floodlit tracks nationwide.

Mistakes to avoid

• Walking to a city quay for the Vaasa ferry. The terminal is in Holmsund, about 20 km south.
• Reading Vaasa times as Swedish time. Finland is one hour ahead.
• Waiting at the wrong station. Umeå has Umeå C and Umeå Östra; check your ticket.
• Planning Bildmuseet on a Monday or Tuesday. It opens Wednesday to Sunday.
• Expecting Gammlia’s summer programme out of season. Only the grounds are open all year.
• Assuming the Stockholm night train continues to Lapland. The Umeå train is its own line.
• Carrying only cash for the bus. Ultra takes cards and the app, not cash.

How do I get from Stockholm to Umeå?

Fly or take the train. SAS and Norwegian fly Stockholm–Umeå, and Umeå Airport is about 4 km from the center, linked by Ultra’s airport bus, line 80. By rail, SJ runs a daily state-contracted night train between Stockholm and Umeå, separate from the Lapland train, with seats, couchettes and sleepers. Plan day connections in Resrobot.

Can I take a ferry from Umeå to Finland?

Yes. Wasaline, a Stena Line company since 2026, sails between Umeå and Vaasa on the ship Aurora Botnia, taking about 3.5 to 4 hours, with 20 to 26 departures a week. The Swedish terminal is in Holmsund, about 20 km south of Umeå on the E12, and opens two hours before departure. Finland is one hour ahead.

Are Umeå’s museums free?

The two big ones are. Bildmuseet, Umeå University’s contemporary-art museum by the river, is open Wednesday to Sunday, 12:00 to 17:00, with free admission. Västerbottens museum at Gammlia is always free and open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays. Gammlia’s open-air museum of about 30 buildings runs its programme in summer; its grounds are open at all hours.

Why is Umeå called the city of birches?

Because of a fire. The great town fire of 1888 destroyed all street planting across the center; in the rebuilding, young birches from the surrounding area were planted about five meters apart along the streets. Today about 2,300 birches line central Umeå, and the tree rows along the east–west streets have been protected as a national interest since 1987.

Can you see the northern lights in Umeå?

Sometimes. SMHI says the best chances in Sweden are in Norrland during the winter half-year, and Umeå is in Norrland, but the aurora needs a dark, fairly clear sky and never shows in the light summer nights. Odds are higher further north around Kiruna. Get away from street lights and look north when a forecast is strong.
