March is snow in the mountains, thaw in Stockholm and early spring in Skåne, all under days that lengthen by the minute. In 2027 it also packs the end of the school ski weeks, Vasaloppet, and the whole of Easter into one month.

When you need this

You’re choosing between February, March and April for a ski trip or Lapland, and want to know which weeks are crowded. You’ve seen that Easter 2027 falls in March and wonder what closes. Or you’re planning a city break and want to know whether March counts as spring yet. For March to May as a season, see Sweden in spring; this page is the March calendar.

Weather by region: spring in the south, winter in the north

SMHI, the national weather agency, defines spring as the first of seven days in a row with a daily mean between 0 °C and 10 °C. On the 1991–2020 normal, that arrives in Stockholm on about 3 March, but only about 3 April at Östersund and about 24 April in Kiruna. Lund has usually been in spring since early February.

PlaceMarch normal (24-hour mean)Spring usually arrivesWhat March feels like
Lund (Skåne)3.2 °C~5 FebruaryEarly spring; last snow days around the end of March
Stockholm1.6 °C~3 MarchThaw month
Östersund (Jämtland)−2.3 °C~3 AprilWinter, ski season
Kiruna (Lapland)−7.3 °C~24 AprilFull winter, aurora still possible

These are 24-hour averages, so a sunny afternoon feels milder and a clear night colder. Month-by-month figures are in Sweden’s weather by month.

The light: equinox and the clock change

This is the month the darkness lets go. Around the equinox the day grows by more than ten minutes a day in the far north and by about five minutes a day in the south, about 35 minutes a week, according to SMHI. By mid-March the day is close to 12 hours everywhere, from Malmö to Kiruna. The spring equinox, when day and night are about equally long, falls on 20 March in Sweden for many years to come.

Then the clocks jump. Summer time (sommartid) begins at 02.00 on the last Sunday in March, when the clock goes straight to 03.00, and Sweden moves from UTC+1 to UTC+2. In 2027 that is Sunday 28 March, which is also Easter Sunday. Phones adjust themselves; your sleep doesn’t, and an early train, flight or ferry that morning leaves an hour sooner than your body expects. The details are in our guide to Sweden’s time zone and the clock change.

Waffle Day has a linguistic origin. Isof, the state institute for language and folklore, explains that vårfrudagen (Lady Day, 25 March) came to sound like “vafferdagen” in some dialects, close enough to våffla (waffle) that Swedes have eaten waffles on it since at least the 1800s. In 2027 it lands on Maundy Thursday.

Skiing in March: crowds early, long light late

March is prime ski month: every big southern resort is open. The catch is the first half. Sportlov, the winter-sports school break, rolls through weeks 7 to 10 by municipality, and weeks 9 and 10 cover 1–14 March 2027. If you want quiet slopes, ski after 14 March, when the light is long as well. Which week belongs to which town is in our school holidays guide.

Don’t assume everything runs to Easter Monday and beyond. Several areas close on 4 April 2027, Sälen’s on 11 or 18 April, while Åre’s high zone runs to 2 May. All dates are subject to snow. Skiing in Sweden compares the resorts.

Vasaloppet, the 90 km classic ski race from Sälen to Mora, has gone on the first Sunday in March since 1948 (2015 was the exception), and its winter week draws over 50,000 visitors to Mora. Watching along the course is free, but the organiser’s buses carry skiers only, not spectators. See our Vasaloppet guide for entry and viewing points.

For ski touring, STF’s mountain huts are in their winter season from late February to about the turn of April and May, so March is in the middle of it. Book mountain night trains early: SJ’s winter-sports period runs 11 January to 4 April 2027.

Lapland in March: aurora, ice and a late ski season

March is the last month of the aurora season around Kiruna, which runs from about September to March. You need darkness and a clear sky, and displays are often most active between 21:00 and 23:00. Kiruna’s March normal is −7.3 °C, against −11.3 °C in January. Our northern lights guide covers where to look.

The Icehotel says December and February are its busy months, and rooms may be easier to find in January, March or April; see the Icehotel guide. Further north, the Arctic resorts are just getting going: Riksgränsen has published its 2027 season, and Björkliden had not yet published its 2027 dates in mid-October 2026.

Easter 2027: holidays, closures and an hour less sleep

All three Easter public holidays fall in March in 2027: Good Friday 26, Easter Sunday 28 and Easter Monday 29 March. Maundy Thursday and Holy Saturday are ordinary days by law. Public transport runs Sunday timetables on the holidays and a normal weekday on Maundy Thursday. The traditions are in Easter in Sweden.

Systembolaget closes on every public holiday and Sunday, but had not published its Easter 2027 hours when we checked in October 2026; the Saturday and Thursday rows follow its 2026 pattern. Check Systembolaget’s opening hours before you rely on them.

Driving into Stockholm? Its congestion tax is not charged on Good Friday or Easter Monday, but its rules do charge the day before Good Friday, so Maundy Thursday is a normal tax day there. Gothenburg has no such exception. See congestion tax in Stockholm and Gothenburg.

School Easter breaks don’t line up with Easter itself: Malmö’s runs 22–28 March, Göteborg’s 26 March–2 April and Stockholm’s 30 March–2 April.

Is March cheap?

No, it’s mid-priced. SCB, Statistics Sweden, tracks hotel prices monthly in its consumer price index. March sat about 7–9% above January’s yearly low in both 2025 and 2026, and 13–16% below the peak month. Demand tells the same story: in 2019, the last full pre-pandemic year, Jämtland’s mountain county was fuller in February than in March, while Stockholm was fuller in March than in January. For the cheapest hotel month, see Sweden in January.

Late-winter hazards

March weather is kind, but it brings its own risks:

  • Spring ice (våris) is weak even where it looks solid. Stay off it; see ice safety.
  • Snow glare: sunlight reflected off snow can injure the eyes. Wear sunglasses or goggles.
  • Avalanches: off-piste, check lavinprognoser.se, avoid slopes steeper than 25 degrees, and remember most avalanches come the day after a heavy snowstorm.
  • Thaw roads: back roads can be capped at 12, 8 or 4 tonnes during tjällossning, the spring thaw. A heavy motorhome on a 4-tonne road risks a fine.
  • Winter tyres are compulsory until 31 March in winter conditions, foreign cars included; studs may stay until 15 April. See winter tyres.
  • Dogs: from 1 March they must not run loose where there is wildlife, which in practice means a lead (leash rules).
  • Ticks wake up: SVA, the national veterinary institute, gives March to November as the main season (ticks in Sweden).

Two smaller disappointments: semla season is over, because bakeries sell the cream bun only until Shrove Tuesday (9 February in 2027). And if you’re a birder, about 30,000 cranes pass Hornborgasjön over a few weeks from late March; check the naturum’s daily count before you go.

FAQ

Is March a good time to visit Sweden?

Yes, if you want snow and light together. The mountains and Lapland are in full winter with days near 12 hours, the aurora season is still running in the north, and the south starts to thaw. The busy dates are the sportlov weeks to 14 March and Easter, which falls on 25–29 March in 2027.

How cold is Sweden in March?

It depends on where you are. SMHI’s 1991–2020 March normals are 3.2 °C in Lund, 1.6 °C in Stockholm, −2.3 °C at Östersund and −7.3 °C in Kiruna. These are 24-hour averages, so sunny afternoons feel milder and nights colder. Spring usually reaches Stockholm in early March but Kiruna only in late April.

Can you still ski in Sweden in March?

Yes; March is prime ski month. All the big southern resorts are open, Åre’s high zone runs to 2 May and Riksgränsen skis until 23 May 2027. Avoid sportlov weeks 9 and 10, 1–14 March 2027, if you want quiet slopes. STF’s mountain huts are open for ski touring from late February.

When do the clocks change in Sweden in March 2027?

On Sunday 28 March 2027, which is also Easter Sunday. At 02.00 the clock jumps to 03.00 and Sweden moves from UTC+1 to UTC+2 summer time. Phones adjust automatically, but check any early train, flight or ferry that morning, because the night is an hour shorter.

Is Sweden closed at Easter 2027?

No. Good Friday 26 March, Easter Sunday 28 March and Easter Monday 29 March are public holidays, so public transport runs Sunday timetables and many places keep holiday hours; Maundy Thursday and Holy Saturday are ordinary days. Systembolaget is closed on all three holidays; its 2027 hours were not yet published, and in 2026 it opened until 15:00 on Holy Saturday.

Can I see the northern lights in March?

Yes, in Lapland. March is the last month of the aurora season in the Kiruna area, which runs from about September to March. You need darkness and a clear sky; the most active displays often come between 21:00 and 23:00. March nights are milder than January’s: Kiruna’s normal is −7.3 °C.

What events are on in Sweden in March 2027?

Vasaloppet, the 90 km ski race from Sälen to Mora, on Sunday 7 March, the same day the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun close. Melodifestivalen, Sweden’s Eurovision selection, holds its final in Stockholm on 13 March. Waffle Day is 25 March, and Easter runs 25–29 March.
