Swedish skiing splits into a southern mountain belt that opens before Christmas and an Arctic pair that waits for the light. Your week matters as much as your resort, because Swedish school holidays fill the slopes one municipality at a time.
When you need this
You’re choosing a Swedish ski resort for a first trip, or you’ve noticed that one week in February costs far more than the next. Maybe you want to reach the mountains without a car. Or you’re wondering whether your child needs a helmet, or who checks the snow if you leave the marked runs.

Åre is the one with a station in the village and an airport nearby, Åre Östersund. Sälen spreads over several ski areas linked by a ski bus. Björkliden and Riksgränsen share one lift pass, and the Arctic Ski Pass adds Narvikfjellet across the Norwegian border. For the full picture of Åre’s areas and lifts, see our Åre ski guide.
When the season runs
The operators plan these 2026/27 openings: Vemdalsskalet 27 November, Sälen (Lindvallen) 4 December, Åre 11 December, and Idre Fjäll’s full season and snow guarantee from 19 December. Every date depends on snow; SkiStar says lifts open “as soon as snow conditions, weather and local preparation allow”.
Two details catch visitors out:
- One resort, several dates. Åre village opens 11 December, but the high zone opens only on 8 February. In Sälen, Lindvallen opens a week before Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället.
- The Arctic resorts skip the dark months. In 2026 Björkliden opened on 6 February and Riksgränsen on 20 February. They skied until 3 May and 24 May, and Riksgränsen opened again at Midsummer. Neither had published 2027 dates when we checked.
Through the season the pattern looks like this:

Sportlov: the weeks to avoid
Sportlov, the Swedish school winter break, is the single biggest driver of crowds and prices. It is not one national week. School term dates are set by each school’s governing body — for municipal schools, the municipality — within a national frame of at least 178 school days and 12 holiday days.
So the break rolls across the country. For 2027:

Independent schools may use other weeks, and every other municipality picks its own. The practical takeaway is that the whole of weeks 7 to 10 is busy. Stockholm’s Easter break, week 13 (30 March – 2 April), is another peak. If you want quiet slopes, January and the weeks between sportlov and Easter are your windows. Getting there without a car
Åre is the easy one. The station sits in the middle of the village. SJ runs night trains to Åre and Duved, and Snälltåget runs night trains to the mountains from 16 December 2026 to 2 May 2027. The night train to Lapland guide covers booking and berths.
Sälen needs a train plus a bus: take the train to Mora, then the connecting bus. Snälltåget runs this combination on Saturdays from 19 December 2026 to 10 April 2027. Direct coaches avoid the change:
- Fjällexpressen line 1 runs Malmö – Göteborg – Sälen – Trysil, and line 2 runs Stockholm – Uppsala – Sälen – Idre – Grövelsjön. The season runs 17 December 2026 to 11 April 2027.
- Vy bus4you runs Göteborg – Sälen on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 December 2026 to 11 April 2027.
Idre is on Fjällexpressen’s line 2, or reachable by train plus connecting bus. Vemdalen means a train to Röjan or Östersund, then a bus transfer.
Björkliden and Riksgränsen have their own stops on the night-train line from Stockholm to Narvik. Bus 91 from Kiruna also serves both in the winter season. If you do drive, read winter driving in Sweden first. Flying with skis? Book them as sports equipment in advance, because SAS counts skis, poles, helmet and boot bag as one item up to 23 kg.
Helmets and the rules on the slope
No rule we found makes helmets compulsory for adult skiers in Sweden. The norm comes from the operators, and it’s strong:
- SkiStar urges every skier to wear an approved helmet. Children aged 0–6 ski free, but only when wearing one, and a child without a helmet can be refused lift access.
- At Björkliden and Riksgränsen, children up to 7 ski free with a helmet.
At SkiStar resorts, the Swedish lift operators’ rules, Lilla Gula (“the little yellow one”), are part of your contract. They are the traffic, run and lift rules for downhill skiers. Breaking them can get you removed or your pass blocked.
Off-piste and avalanches
This is the boundary that matters. The resort’s avalanche assessment covers the runs and the terrain you can reach by gliding from an open lift back to an open lift or run, unless the resort says otherwise. Step beyond that and you’re on your own. SkiStar’s terms call skiing outside secured, prepared runs high-risk and “not recommended”, and the company takes no responsibility for it.
Outside the resort, the source is Naturvårdsverket’s lavinprognoser.se, which publishes daily forecasts from mid-December for six mountain areas. Two cover this page’s resorts: Södra Jämtlandsfjällen (Åre) and Abisko/Björkliden/Riksgränsen. Sälen, Vemdalen and Idre lie outside all six, so no public forecast exists there.
Before any off-piste day, follow the national mountain-safety advice:
- Most avalanches happen the day after a heavy snowstorm. Avoid slopes steeper than 25° in avalanche terrain.
- Carry transceiver, shovel and probe — and ski with companions trained to use them. Companion rescue comes first; call 112 when it doesn’t slow the search.
- Runs can close for avalanche danger, and at SkiStar a temporary safety closure gives no refund.

Mistakes to avoid
- Treating sportlov as one national week and booking “the week after”.
- Planning a January trip to Riksgränsen or Björkliden.
- Reading Åre’s opening date as the day the whole mountain opens.
- Following ski tracks out of the resort and assuming its assessment still applies.
- Flying with skis you didn’t book as sports equipment.
- Forgetting a child’s helmet and losing the free child pass.

FAQ
When is ski season in Sweden?
For 2026/27, the southern resorts open from 27 November (Vemdalsskalet), 4 December (Sälen) and 11 December (Åre), with Idre’s full season from 19 December. Most close between early and mid-April; Åre runs to 2 May. The Arctic resorts Björkliden and Riksgränsen open in February and ski into May.
When is sportlov in Sweden?
There is no single week. Each municipality sets its own school holidays within a national frame. For 2027, Gothenburg has sportlov in week 7 (15–19 February), Malmö week 8, Stockholm week 9 (1–5 March) and Umeå week 10 (8–12 March). Independent schools may differ, so the busy period spans about four weeks.
Can you get to Swedish ski resorts without a car?
Yes. Åre has a station in the village, served by SJ night trains and, from 16 December 2026 to 2 May 2027, Snälltåget. Sälen and Idre are reached by train to Mora plus bus, or by seasonal direct coaches from Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö. Björkliden and Riksgränsen have stations on the line to Narvik.
Is a ski helmet mandatory in Sweden?
Not by any rule we found for adults, but resorts urge everyone to wear an approved helmet. At SkiStar, children up to six ski free only with a helmet and can be refused lift access without one. At Björkliden and Riksgränsen, children up to seven ski free with a helmet.
Is off-piste skiing safe at Swedish resorts?
Only the runs and the terrain you can reach from an open lift back to an open lift or run fall under the resort’s avalanche assessment. Beyond that, check lavinprognoser.se, which covers six areas including Åre and Riksgränsen. SkiStar calls off-piste high-risk and takes no responsibility for it. Carry avalanche kit and ski with trained companions.
Which Swedish ski resort is best for spring skiing?
The Arctic resorts. In 2026, Björkliden skied until 3 May and Riksgränsen until 24 May, with weekend openings into June. Åre’s high zone runs until 2 May in 2026/27. The southern resorts in Dalarna and Härjedalen usually close in April. Check each resort’s page, because the Arctic resorts had not published 2027 dates yet.
