Sweden in Spring: Shoulder Season Secrets

Swedish spring doesn’t arrive on a date. It creeps north, reaching Skåne in February and Lapland almost three months later. Here is where it is in each month, the three holidays that shape a spring trip, and the in-between rules most guides leave out.

When you need this

You’re deciding between March, April and May. You want to plan around Easter or Valborg, catch the last ski weeks, see the cranes at Hornborgasjön, or simply travel before the July crowds. Or you’re bringing a dog, a tent or a motorhome and want to know what changes between March and May. This page is the overview; each part links to its own guide.

Spring moves north

SMHI, Sweden’s national weather agency, doesn’t count spring by the calendar. Spring begins when the daily mean temperature stays above 0 °C but below 10 °C for seven days in a row. Summer begins when it stays at 10 °C or higher for five days.

Measured that way, spring arrives about 11 weeks later in Lapland than in Skåne. SMHI’s average arrival dates for 1991–2020:

Lund has no meteorological winter at all on the current normal, which is why its spring can start in February. At the other end, the high mountains sometimes keep snow into June.

The light changes fastest now too. Around the spring equinox the day gets more than ten minutes longer every day in the far north, and about five minutes longer in the south. By late May Kiruna has midnight sun: the Swedish almanac that SMHI quotes gives 29 May to 14 July. More in the midnight sun.

Month by month

Monthly means climb about 9 °C between March and May in the south. These are 24-hour averages, so afternoons are warmer and nights colder than the figures below.

March is late winter in most of Sweden and the best ski-touring month in the mountains. Stockholm’s spring normally arrives around 3 March. The far south usually has its last snow days at the end of the month.

April is Easter and cranes. Spring reaches Östersund around 3 April and Kiruna around 24 April, while Lund’s summer arrives around 29 April.

May is when Stockholm and the south turn green. Stockholm’s summer normally arrives around 7 May. It’s also the gap before the July peak: May–June is the value window, when demand is lower than in July. Some sights still run winter hours until the end of May. The Vasa Museum, for example, switches to summer hours in June.

Easter, Valborg and Ascension: the days that change plans

Three dates matter in a Swedish spring. Only some of them are public holidays in law.

Easter (påsk) is the friendliest of the Swedish holidays for a visitor. It’s a four-day weekend, and most attractions and public transport keep running. The one hard stop is Systembolaget, the state alcohol retailer. Its 2027 Easter hours are not yet published, but in 2026 it was shut on all three holidays and open only until 15:00 on Holy Saturday. Stockholm’s schools have their Easter break (påsklov) from 30 March to 2 April 2027; other municipalities set their own dates. Customs, food and the witch-costumed children are in Easter in Sweden.

Valborg (valborgsmässoafton, Walpurgis Night) on 30 April is Sweden’s welcome to spring. Towns light public bonfires at dusk, with choirs and spring speeches. Isof, the state folklore institute, names Uppsala and Lund as the places it’s celebrated most intensely. In Uppsala the student-cap moment came at 15:00 on 30 April in 2026. A public bonfire needs police permission. Everything else is in Valborg.

Ascension Day (Kristi himmelsfärdsdag) is always a Thursday; in 2027 it falls on 6 May. The Friday after it is a klämdag, a working day squeezed between a holiday and a weekend, when many people take leave.

Buy alcohol before the holidays. On 1 May 2027 Systembolaget is shut Saturday and Sunday back to back. The full list of closure days is in Swedish public holidays.

Late skiing and the mountains

Spring is the mountains’ best ski season. STF’s mountain huts (fjällstugor) are open for winter from late February until about the turn of April and May. The staffed mountain stations stay open until late April or early May. Days are long and bright, and sun on snow calls for sunglasses.

Lift-served resorts close earlier or later depending on the area and the snow. In the 2026/27 season several smaller ski areas are scheduled to close on 4 April, and Åre on 2 May 2027. See skiing in Sweden and STF mountain huts.

Don’t book a ski tour for mid-May expecting the huts to be open. And in May, snowmelt swells mountain rivers fast, so fords that were easy can become dangerous.

Nature in spring

The cranes. For a few weeks in late March and early April, about 30,000 cranes pass through Hornborgasjön in Västergötland. The viewpoints and an info center are at Trandansen on the southern shore. The first birds arrive in February (27 February in 2026), and the big numbers follow a couple of weeks later. The naturum, run by the county administrative board, publishes a daily crane count in season. Check it before you go, because an early or late spring moves the peak. More in wildlife in Sweden.

Bird sanctuaries close. Many bird sanctuaries are closed to the public in spring and early summer, most commonly from 1 April to 15 July (1 May to 31 July in the north). Each area’s own rules give its dates.

Dogs on leads from 1 March. From 1 March to 20 August, the law says dogs must not be able to run loose anywhere wildlife lives. Naturvårdsverket, the environmental protection agency, says that in practice this almost always means a lead. Details in leash law in Sweden.

Ticks wake up. SVA, the national veterinary institute, gives the main tick season as March to November, with ticks active from about +10 °C. Check your whole body every evening and pull any tick straight out with tweezers. See ticks in Sweden.

Warning: Spring ice (våris) is weak even where it looks solid. Stay off it. Falling through means near-freezing water. Read ice safety first.

Fire risk comes early. Last year’s dry grass burns easily in spring, and SMHI runs a separate grass-fire forecast until the new grass grows. Forest-fire season usually starts in May. Check the national fire-ban map before lighting anything: fire bans in Sweden.

Driving in the thaw

Winter tyres are required until 31 March when there are winter road conditions. Studded tyres may stay on until 15 April, and after that only while winter conditions exist or are expected.

Then comes the thaw (tjällossning). When the frozen ground thaws, weak roads can be damaged, and road authorities may cap them at 12, 8 or 4 tonnes gross or axle weight. This only applies to roads that have been restricted and signed, and most main roads are unaffected. It matters most for heavy motorhomes on back roads. Watch for moose and deer too. In spring the mothers drive off last year’s calves, and the young animals end up on roads, especially at dawn and dusk.

Mistakes to avoid

• Expecting spring in Lapland in April. Kiruna’s meteorological spring arrives around 24 April.
• Planning Easter as if it were Christmas. Most things run; plan around Systembolaget only.
• Leaving alcohol shopping for 1 May, which in 2027 is a Saturday before the Sunday closure.
• Letting a dog run loose in March. The leash period starts on 1 March.
• Assuming ticks are a summer problem. The season starts in March.
• Booking a mid-May ski tour expecting huts to be open.
• Driving a heavy motorhome on back roads in the thaw without checking restrictions.

Is spring a good time to visit Sweden?

Yes, if you match the month to the region. March is late winter in most of the country and prime ski-touring time in the mountains. April brings Easter and the crane gathering at Hornborgasjön. May is when Stockholm and the south turn green, Valborg is celebrated and demand is still well below the July peak.

When does spring start in Sweden?

It depends on where you are. SMHI counts spring from the first of seven days in a row with a daily mean above 0 °C but below 10 °C. On the 1991–2020 normal that is about 5 February in Lund, 3 March in Stockholm, 3 April at Östersund and 24 April in Kiruna.

What is the weather like in Sweden in April?

Mild in the south, still wintry in the north. SMHI’s normal April mean is 7.8 °C in Lund and 6.3 °C in Stockholm, but 2.5 °C at Östersund and −1.7 °C in Kiruna, where snow usually still lies. These are 24-hour averages, so afternoons are warmer and nights colder.

Is Sweden closed at Easter?

No. Easter is a four-day weekend: Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are public holidays, and in 2027 they fall on 26, 28 and 29 March. Most attractions and public transport run. The main closure is Systembolaget, which in 2026 was shut on all three holidays and open only until 15:00 on Holy Saturday.

What is Valborg and can visitors join?

Valborg, on 30 April, is Sweden’s welcome to spring: public bonfires at dusk, choirs and, in Uppsala and Lund, all-day student celebrations. Anyone can join the public events. It is not a holiday, but 1 May is, so in 2027 Systembolaget is closed on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 May.
