January sits between the Christmas holidays and the Swedish ski weeks. Hotels are at their cheapest of the year, the slopes are quiet and the light is coming back. Here is what the month costs, what it feels like and what is on in 2027.

When you need this

You’re looking for an off-peak city break and wondering whether January is a bargain or a mistake. Or you’re choosing between January and February for Lapland or the ski resorts. Maybe you want to know what is closed around New Year and Epiphany, or whether the Kiruna Snow Festival or the Göteborg Film Festival fits your dates.

Is Sweden cheap in January?

For hotels, yes, and this time the claim comes from official statistics rather than a travel blog. SCB, Statistics Sweden, tracks hotel prices every month as part of the consumer price index. In 2025 the hotel index was lower in January than in any other month. In 2026, January is again the lowest month so far, roughly a fifth below the peak months of May to September.

Demand explains it. SCB’s monthly occupancy series runs to 2021, and in 2019, the last full year before the pandemic, Swedish hotels, cabin villages and hostels filled about a third of their beds in January against nearly two thirds in July. Stockholm County had its lowest occupancy of the whole year in January.

Two caveats keep this honest:

We publish no room rates, because they change daily. The index values are in Practical information below.

Weather and light by region

Sweden is long, so “January weather” depends on where you stand. These are SMHI’s 1991–2020 normals, the national weather agency’s 30-year averages.

PlaceJanuary normalWhat it feels like
Lund, Skåne+0.9 °CGrey, damp, rain and slush as often as snow
Falsterbo, the southern tip+1.8 °CSweden’s mildest January
Stockholm−1.0 °CAround freezing; ice grips useful
Östersund, Jämtland−5.5 °CColder inland winter
Kiruna, Lapland−11.3 °CDry cold, deep snow
Randijaur, inner Lapland−15.1 °CSweden’s coldest January normal

You may see “an average of −20 °C” for Kiruna on a festival page. SMHI’s normal is −11.3 °C. Cold snaps go far lower, but pack for the normal plus a margin, not for a myth. Our packing guide for a Swedish winter has the layers.

Light. In southernmost Sweden the shortest day is about seven hours, and dawn and dusk are fairly light. In Kiruna the polarnatt (polar night), about 27 days centred on the solstice, ends in early January, when the sun clears the horizon again. Even during the polar night a few midday hours of twilight give usable light. Polar night in Sweden explains how it works.

Closures: two days to plan around

Only two January days close Sweden, and the second one catches visitors. New Year’s Day and Epiphany (trettondedag jul, 6 January) are both public holidays in law. In 2027 Epiphany falls on a Wednesday. Systembolaget, the state alcohol retailer, is closed on both days and keeps ordinary hours on 2 and 5 January.

Tjugondag Knut, 13 January, is the formal end of Christmas. Nordiska museet, Sweden’s museum of cultural history, dates the custom to at least the 1600s: twenty days after Christmas Eve, the tree comes down, sometimes at a julgransplundring party. It is not a public holiday, so shops and offices run normally. Our tjugondag Knut guide has the story, and Swedish public holidays lists the rest of the year.

Driving into Stockholm or Gothenburg? Congestion tax isn’t charged on public holidays or the day before one, so 1, 5 and 6 January are charge-free. January is also low season in Stockholm. See congestion tax in Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Events worth timing a trip around

Kiruna Snow Festival, 27–30 January 2027. Held in Kiruna’s centre since 1986, it is built around an international snow-sculpture competition, with dog sledding, a snow playground for children and Sámi culture in the programme. Entry is free; some evening events may need a ticket or a small fee. The organiser publishes the programme around the end of 2026. Our guide to the Kiruna Snow Festival will cover it in depth.

Göteborg Film Festival, 29 January – 7 February 2027. The festival marks its 50th edition with ten days of screenings in Gothenburg. Screenings are ticketed, with prices on the festival’s own pages. See our Göteborg Film Festival guide.

Just after January: the Jokkmokk winter market, 4–6 February 2027, the next dated event in Lapland. Melodifestivalen, Sweden’s Eurovision selection, opens its 2027 tour in Karlstad in early February, not January (Melodifestivalen explained).

Skiing and Lapland in January

January is the quiet month in the mountains. Swedish families ski in sportlov, the school winter break, which each municipality places somewhere in weeks 7–10: 15 February to 14 March in 2027. Book “the week after” one city’s break and you land in another’s. Swedish school holidays has the weeks by town.

What’s open:

  • Åre and the southern mountains are open, but in Åre most lifts run 09:30–15:00 and most of the upper-mountain lifts (högzon) open only on 8 February 2027. January skiing there is mostly the lower mountain. See the Åre ski guide.
  • Riksgränsen and Björkliden, above the Arctic Circle, skip the dark months and open in February.
  • STF’s mountain huts open for the winter season in late February. A January ski tour finds only a spartan safety room.
  • The Icehotel says rooms are easier to find in January than in its busy December and February.

Night trains to the mountains get busy despite the quiet slopes. SJ’s winter-sports period runs from 11 January to 4 April 2027, and tickets go on sale at the end of October. The night train to Lapland guide covers the northern line.

For the aurora, January gives the longest dark hours. In the Kiruna area the most active displays often come between 21:00 and 23:00, and the Swedish Institute of Space Physics’ free Aurora Alert app tells you when it is overhead. Northern lights in Sweden covers the odds.

City January: Stockholm and Gothenburg

Expect short days and an indoor rhythm. Plan outdoor time around midday and keep museums and cafés for the dark afternoons.

  • Semla season. Bakeries sell the semla, a cream-and-almond-paste bun, from late December or early January until Shrove Tuesday, 9 February in 2027. Our semla guide explains it.
  • Natural-ice skating. Around Stockholm the season usually starts in mid to late January, sooner after a cold December, and the city ploughs tracks on lakes once the ice holds. The lakes are unsupervised; read Nordic ice skating and ice safety first.
  • The archipelago. In hard winters the boats switch to an istidtabell (ice timetable) with fewer, slower departures. See Stockholm archipelago ferries.

FAQ

Is January a good time to visit Sweden?

Yes, if you want low prices and few crowds more than warmth. SCB’s hotel price index is at its yearly low in January, ski slopes are quiet until sportlov in mid-February, and Lapland has snow, aurora and returning light. The trade-off is cold and short days: January normals run from about +1 °C in Lund to −11 °C in Kiruna.

Is Sweden cheap in January?

Cheaper than the rest of the year, though not cheap. SCB’s hotel price index was lower in January than in any other month of 2025, and January 2026 is the lowest month of 2026 so far, roughly a fifth below the peak months. Hotel occupancy is low too. Cabins and hostels show less of a January dip, and food and transport prices do not follow the season.

How cold is Sweden in January?

It depends on where you are. SMHI’s 1991–2020 January normals are +0.9 °C in Lund, −1.0 °C in Stockholm, −5.5 °C at Östersund and −11.3 °C in Kiruna; Randijaur in inner Lapland averages −15.1 °C. The south often gets grey rain and slush, the north dry cold and lasting snow. Wind makes any of these feel colder.

Is it dark all day in Sweden in January?

No. In southernmost Sweden the shortest day is about seven hours, and the days lengthen through January. In Kiruna the polar night, about 27 days centred on the winter solstice, ends in early January, when the sun clears the horizon again. Even during the polar night a few midday hours of twilight give usable light outdoors.

What is closed in Sweden in January 2027?

Two days. New Year’s Day, Friday 1 January, and Epiphany, Wednesday 6 January, are public holidays, and Systembolaget is closed on both; it keeps ordinary hours on 2 and 5 January. Tjugondag Knut, 13 January, ends the Christmas season but is an ordinary working day. Check opening hours for each place you plan to visit.

What events are there in Sweden in January?

The two big dated ones are the Kiruna Snow Festival, 27–30 January 2027, free and held since 1986, and the 50th Göteborg Film Festival, 29 January to 7 February 2027. Tjugondag Knut on 13 January ends Christmas. The Jokkmokk winter market follows just after, on 4–6 February 2027.

Can I ski in Sweden in January?

Yes, in the southern mountains, and it is the quiet month. Åre is mostly lower-mountain skiing until its upper-mountain lifts open on 8 February 2027. Sportlov, when Swedish families fill the resorts, runs from 15 February to 14 March 2027. Riksgränsen and Björkliden, above the Arctic Circle, stay closed until February, and STF’s mountain huts open in late February.
