Sweden in December: Markets, Lucia and Early Darkness

December in Sweden runs on Advent candles, short days and one big date: Christmas Eve. Here is the 2026 calendar at a glance, what the dark really means, and which guide to read next for each part of the month.

You’re deciding whether December is worth it, or choosing between a Christmas-market city break and a Lapland trip. You want to know what closes over Christmas 2026, when Lucia is, or whether the ski resorts and the Icehotel will be open. This page answers each question briefly and sends you to the guide that owns it.

December 2026 at a glance

The Swedish Christmas season is a stretch of weeks, not a day. It opens on the first Sunday of Advent, runs through Lucia and peaks on Christmas Eve (julafton), not Christmas Day.

How dark it gets

In southernmost Sweden the day is about seven hours long at midwinter. SMHI, the national weather agency, points out that dawn and dusk are usually fairly light, so it feels less grim than the number suggests.

North of the Arctic Circle, about 66.5° N, the sun does not rise at all around the solstice, about 22 December. In Kiruna this polar night (polarnatt) lasts about 27 days. It is not pitch black: SMHI says a few hours around midday still bring dawn-and-dusk light. The details are in our guide to the polar night.

The weather splits the country too. SMHI’s normals for January, the month that follows, are +1.8 °C at Falsterbo on the southern tip and −15.1 °C at Randijaur in Lapland. Expect grey, damp days around zero in the south and deep cold with snow in the north. The full picture is in Sweden in winter.

The practical effect: plan outdoor time around midday and keep museums and cafés for the dark afternoons. In the north, the dark is also the point, because the aurora needs it. In the Kiruna area the season runs from about September to March, and the most active displays often come between 21:00 and 23:00.

Christmas markets and Advent

A julmarknad (Christmas market) sells crafts, Christmas food and glögg, the spiced mulled drink. Markets run across the country, from Gammelstad in the far north to Malmö, and mostly cluster around the Advent weekends.

The Gamla stan market is not confirmed for 2026. On 3 September 2026 its organiser said police demands for vehicle barriers and the cost of its own guards meant it could not hold a market unless the city covers security. The “22 November–23 December 2026” dates on travel lists are last year’s, copied forward. Check the organiser’s own site in November.

Two legal points surprise visitors. A market is a public event in law, so alcohol may be drunk there only where serving is permitted, and you may not bring your own. And bottles of glögg above 3.5% are sold only by Systembolaget, from age 20; stalls sell takeaway glögg alcohol-free. Lucia: Sunday 13 December

Lucia is celebrated on 13 December in schools, churches, workplaces and homes. In 2026 it falls on a Sunday. It is not a public holiday, so ordinary Sunday hours apply.

The processions in schools and workplaces are internal. Visitors go to church Lucia concerts, which spread over the days around the 13th: Gothenburg Cathedral holds five from 10 to 13 December 2026, with tickets released on 23 October at 16:00. The big cathedral concerts sell out; all seven Stockholm Cathedral concerts did in 2025. Skansen has held Lucia since 1893. Christmas Eve and the closures

Most visitors plan around 25 December. In Sweden the day that matters is Thursday 24 December. It is not a public holiday in law, yet it closes the country hardest.

Systembolaget, the state alcohol retailer, is therefore shut four days running, Thursday to Sunday. Buy by Wednesday 23 December.

There are exceptions. Skansen opens on Christmas Eve 2026 from 10:00 to 14:00. Museums that close on 24–25 December often reopen on Boxing Day; Nationalmuseum keeps normal hours on the 26th.

If you spend Christmas Eve with a Swedish family, many eat Christmas lunch first and then watch the Disney cartoon hour Kalle Anka (Donald Duck) on SVT at 15:00. SVT says the programme can be seen only live and only in Sweden. For a church service, julotta is the early service on Christmas morning; the Church of Sweden says everyone is welcome. Snow, skiing and the Icehotel

December is when the north opens for winter, but not all at once.

Skiing. SkiStar plans to open Åre by on 11 December 2026 with its Ski Test Weekend, earlier if snow allows. The gondola, Björnen and Duved/Tegefjäll follow on 18 December, and most of the upper mountain only on 8 February 2027. A December trip is mostly lower-mountain skiing. See skiing in Åre.

The Icehotel. ICEHOTEL 37 opens in Jukkasjärvi, in Lapland, on 11 December 2026. The operator names December and February as its busy months and suggests January for easier rooms. See the Icehotel guide.

Getting around in December

The night train north. SJ runs the state-procured night train from Stockholm to Narvik via Kiruna and Abisko. Since April 2026 travelers to Kiruna, Abisko and Narvik have changed trains at Boden around 06:00; SJ expects the cars to run through again from 13 December 2026, when a new contract starts. Driving. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 31 March when there are winter road conditions, foreign cars included. See winter driving in Sweden.

On foot. Slipping is the most common cause of pedestrian falls on Swedish roads and paths, so wear boots with grip and add ice grips (broddar). Mistakes to avoid

Warning: Systembolaget is closed from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 December 2026. Anything you need for Christmas, buy by Wednesday 23 December.

• Planning Christmas dinner or shopping for 25 December instead of Christmas Eve.
• Trusting a “2026 dates” list for the Gamla stan market.
• Arriving without a julbord booking and expecting to walk in.
• Hoping to join a school or workplace Lucia procession; go to a church concert instead.
• Booking a Lucia cathedral concert late.
• Booking the Lapland night train before 13 December without allowing for the Boden change.
• Turning up at Skansen’s market on a weekday; it runs Friday to Sunday.

Is December a good time to visit Sweden?

Yes, if you want Christmas culture or Arctic darkness rather than long days. December brings Advent markets, Lucia concerts and the julbord season across the country, and polar night, the aurora and the first ski and Icehotel openings in the north. Expect short days everywhere, and plan around Christmas Eve, when most of the country closes.

How many hours of daylight does Sweden get in December?

Few. In southernmost Sweden the day is about seven hours long at midwinter, and SMHI notes that dawn and dusk are usually fairly light. North of the Arctic Circle the sun does not rise around the solstice: in Kiruna the polar night lasts about 27 days, though a few midday hours of twilight remain.
