Kalmar is a compact coastal city facing Öland, with a castle, a Baroque cathedral and a county museum built around a 1676 shipwreck, all a short walk apart. This page covers arrival, payment and the Öland crossing, then points you to the in-depth guides.
When you need this
You are planning a day or a weekend in Kalmar, or a stop on the way to Öland. You want to know how to get in from the station or the airport, whether your card works on the bus, and how to take a bike across to the island when the bridge is closed to cyclists. Or you are coming in winter and want to know what is actually open.
The city at a glance
Kalmar kommun had 73,068 residents at the end of 2025. It was one of only two of the county’s twelve municipalities to grow that year. The center is on Kvarnholmen, an island the town moved to in the second half of the 1600s. Much of its stone wall still stands. Gamla stan (“the Old Town”) is not there: it is the older town site just west of the castle.

Getting there
By train. Öresundståg runs Kalmar–Växjö–Hässleholm–Malmö–Copenhagen. You buy the ticket before boarding, because none are sold on the train. Krösatåg regional trains come from Linköping and from Karlskrona via Emmaboda. Kalmar’s tourism site says several departures a day are available from Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö/Copenhagen. Rail works in autumn 2026. On some weekends, works at Alvesta change the trip south, including 24–25 October and 21–22 November. Krösatåg covers Kalmar–Växjö and buses replace trains between Växjö and Älmhult.
By plane. Kalmar Öland Airport is about 5 km from the center, and Kalmar’s tourism site lists several daily flights to Stockholm. Local bus 402 stops by the airport’s nearest car park and passes every 20 minutes. It takes about 13 minutes to Kalmar Central.
By long-distance bus. Buses from Stockholm and Arlanda stop at Kalmar Central Station, and the castle is about 750 m away on foot.
Getting around and paying
Buses and the Krösatåg trains are run by Kalmar länstrafik, the county’s public transport:

- Line 500 (Karlskrona–Kalmar) sells no tickets on board within Kalmar County.

All buses and trains are adapted for accessibility, the operator says.
Crossing to Öland
The Öland Bridge, about 6 km long and opened in 1972, carries road 137 to the island. It has no toll: Sweden’s state bridge fees apply only at Motala, Sundsvall and Skurubron.
You may not walk or cycle over it. Länsstyrelsen i Kalmar län, the county administrative board, banned foot and bike traffic in December 2009, and Transportstyrelsen upheld the ban on appeal. Your options with a bike:

The ferry season has shrunk. In 2025 it ran May to September and ended with no agreement for the next year. In 2026 it ran only 15 June to 16 August. Kalmar länstrafik’s bike page still says mid-May to mid-September, so trust the municipality’s dated page. The 2027 season is not yet published.
Bridge works until 31 March 2027. Trafikverket is closing lanes and lowering the speed from August 2026, daytime 09:00–15:00 and at night 21:00–05:00. Further work is planned from April to November each year in 2027–2030, with little effect on traffic. Our Öland guide covers the island itself.
The Kronan museum
Kalmar läns museum, the county museum, fills Ångkvarnen (“the steam mill”) at Skeppsbrogatan 51. Its centerpiece is the royal warship Kronan. The ship capsized, exploded and sank off Öland on 1 June 1676, and more than 800 people died. The wreck was found in 1980 and has been excavated for 40 years. The exhibition shows its two gold-coin hoards, one of them Sweden’s largest, and more than 40 bronze cannons raised from the wreck.
- Hours, 7 September–30 December 2026: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10:00–16:00; Wednesday 10:00–20:00; weekends 11:00–16:00.
- Christmas closures: 23–26 December, 31 December and 1 January 2027.
- The ticket covers all exhibitions, the day’s guided tours and the atelier. The museum is cashless, card or Swish.
- Access: all public areas take wheelchairs and strollers, with two lifts to every floor.
A combined annual pass covers the museum and Kalmar Castle.
Art, the castle and the cathedral
Kalmar konstmuseum stands in Stadsparken, the city park, and says the building was planned to be fully accessible. It opens Tuesday–Friday 12:00–16:00 and weekends 11:00–16:00, and is closed on Mondays. In summer, 22 June–31 August, it opens daily 11:00–17:00. Entry is free for everyone on Fridays, for students on Wednesdays and always for visitors up to 21.
Kalmar Castle opens daily 10:00–16:00 until 1 November 2026, then only on set days. Its Christmas fair runs 26–29 November with its own ticket; see Christmas markets in Sweden. The Kalmar Castle guide has the full calendar, prices, tours and accessibility.
Kalmar domkyrka on Kvarnholmen is open daily: Monday–Friday 08:00–18:00, weekends 09:00–16:00. Kvarnholmen’s walls have been repaired since 2017, starting at Västerport, the West Gate.
Beaches
The municipality runs about 25 beaches, ready from 21 June for a bathing season that runs to 15 August:

Dogs are banned from municipal beaches from 1 May to 31 August. The municipality names separate dog beaches, including at Svinö, Stensö and Långviken. - Setting off to cycle or walk across the Öland Bridge.
- Counting on the bike ferry in May or September, as older pages say.
- Paying cash on a bus, or planning to buy an Öresundståg ticket on the train.
- Taking a two-wheeled bike on the Krösatåg to Linköping, which does not carry them.
- Looking for the “Old Town” on Kvarnholmen.
- Visiting Kalmar konstmuseum on a Monday outside summer.

FAQ
How do I get to Kalmar?
By train, plane or bus. Öresundståg runs direct from Copenhagen and Malmö via Växjö, and Krösatåg regional trains come from Linköping and Karlskrona. Kalmar Öland Airport, about 5 km out, has several daily flights to Stockholm, and bus 402 reaches Kalmar Central in about 13 minutes. Long-distance buses from Stockholm also stop at the central station.
Can you walk or cycle across the Öland Bridge?
No. The county administrative board banned foot and bike traffic on the bridge in 2009, and Transportstyrelsen upheld the ban. Take a regional bus, which carries two bikes free, or in summer the bike ferry from Tullhamnen to Färjestaden, which in 2026 ran from 15 June to 16 August and took up to 50 bikes per crossing.
Where can I see the Kronan shipwreck?
At Kalmar läns museum, in the old steam mill at Skeppsbrogatan 51. The royal warship Kronan sank off Öland on 1 June 1676 with more than 800 dead and was found in 1980. The exhibition shows its gold-coin hoards and over 40 bronze cannons. In autumn 2026 adults pay 150 kronor, under-20s enter free, and payment is by card or Swish.
Can I pay cash on buses in Kalmar?
No. On board Kalmar länstrafik’s buses and Krösatåg trains you buy single or 24-hour tickets with a bank card, with a surcharge on the fare. The app takes Swish, cards or a customer account. Cash works only at customer centers and resellers. Öresundståg and SJ trains sell nothing on board, so buy those tickets before you travel.
Where can I swim in Kalmar?
The municipality runs about 25 beaches. Kattrumpan and Vågbrytarbadet are in the center, Kalmarsundsparken is about 1 km south, and Långviken, with a diving tower, is about 1.5 km towards Stensö. The season runs from 21 June to 15 August. Dogs are banned from municipal beaches from May through August, except at the designated dog beaches.
Is Kalmar worth visiting in winter?
Yes, with planning. Through December 2026 the county museum opens every day except the Christmas holidays, and the cathedral opens daily. The castle opens only on set days after 1 November 2026, plus its Christmas fair from 26 to 29 November. The bike ferry does not run, and lane closures on the Öland Bridge last until 31 March 2027.
How far is Kalmar Airport from the city?
About 5 km. Local bus 402 stops right by the airport’s nearest car park, passes every 20 minutes and takes about 13 minutes to Kalmar Central. Fares and times are in Kalmar länstrafik’s app and planner. On board you pay by bank card, with a surcharge, so buying in the app first is cheaper.
