Ystad: Wallander Country and Sandy Beaches

Ystad is small enough to walk in a morning and old enough to reward it. This page covers what the official sources say about the town, the Wallander connection, the beaches and their rules, and what is open when.

When you need this

You are planning a day or a night in Ystad from Malmö, Copenhagen or the Bornholm ferry. Maybe you have read or watched Wallander and want to know what is real. Or you want a south-coast beach, perhaps with a dog, and need to know the rules and which museums open on which days, especially outside summer.

Getting there and around

The train is the easy way. Pågatåg line 6 runs Lund–Malmö–Ystad and continues to Simrishamn; you do not change at Ystad for Österlen. The current timetable is valid until 12 December 2026. By road, Malmö to Ystad is about 60 km.

Buy Skånetrafiken tickets in the app or at a station machine. Tapping a bank card on board works on Ystad’s city buses, but not on regional buses or trains. For zones and tickets, see the Skåne public transport guide.

Ystad is also a ferry port: Bornholm is 80 minutes away, and sailings from Świnoujście in Poland take about six to eight hours by day.

The medieval town

Länsstyrelsen Skåne, the county board, calls Ystad one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Sweden. It was a town by the mid-1200s and probably a harbour for the rich medieval herring trade before that. The streets around Sankta Maria church, begun around 1200, still follow their medieval or 1500s layout: irregular blocks and winding lanes.

Few towns in Skåne kept as much of their older building stock, and few have so many half-timbered houses, korsvirkeshus. Buildings of medieval origin include Gamla Latinskolan, Birgittahuset, Brahehuset and Pilgrändshuset. Around them stand merchants’ and craftsmen’s houses from the 1500s to the 1800s.

The town grew beyond its core only in the late 1800s, after the railway reached it: to Eslöv in 1867 and Malmö in 1874. Further out, the red-brick barracks of the 1890s–1914 regiment grounds now house Ystad Studios. The old water tower from 1914, 67 meters tall, is still the town’s tallest building.

Klostret and the night watchman

Klostret i Ystad is the town-history museum, run by the municipality. It sits in a Franciscan friary — the gråbröder, or grey friars — founded in 1267. The friars lived in the east range, which survives. After the Reformation of 1532 it served as a hospital and a grain store. It was restored from 1909 and opened as a museum and library in 1912; the friary church was reconsecrated in 1967.

The combined ticket with Ystads konstmuseum, the art museum, saves money if you visit both. The art museum keeps the same hours but adds Mondays in summer.

At night, listen. Every night of the year a watchman, the tornväktare, blows a copper horn from Sankta Maria church’s tower: one long, low note for every quarter-hour to each compass point. The municipality says the tradition can be dated with certainty to the 1700s. It began as a fire and enemy watch; today the watchman is a town employee and the town’s symbol. Klostret’s exhibition about him runs from 6 June to 22 November 2026.

Wallander’s Ystad

Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander is a detective at the Ystad police, and the town has been the films’ set since 2004. Ystad municipality counts 47 Wallander films shot in the Ystad-Österlen area, Swedish and British.

Freshness note: The story did not end in 2016. Three new Wallander films were shot in Ystad in autumn 2025, with Gustaf Skarsgård as the detective; filming ended in December 2025 after 71 days. The municipality says the first, Steget efter, screens at the Stockholm Film Festival in November 2026 and premieres on TV4 Play Plus in spring 2027.

The place to see it is Ystad Studios Visitor Center, the municipality’s film center on the old regiment grounds, next to the working studio where Bron (The Bridge) was also filmed. You walk through original sets: the police station from the first film, the office from the British series and Wallander’s own living room. The center is fully accessible, companions with a companion card enter free, and dogs are not allowed except guide dogs. Check its website for opening hours.

In the fiction, Wallander lives on Mariagatan, a real street in town. Many films were shot on real streets, so the old town itself is the backdrop.

Beaches and the sea

Ystad municipality has about 40 km of sandy beach, from the dunes of Sandhammaren in the east to Svarte in the west. Just east of the center, Ystads Sandskog is a pine forest planted in the 1800s to stop drifting sand. It is now a nature reserve with bathing, an accessible path, car parks off road 9 and bus access. Jetty 3 there has an accessible bathing ramp down to about 90 cm of water. A beach wheelchair and life jackets can be borrowed free; the municipality’s accessibility page says where.

Dog and horse rules (Ystad’s local ordinance, as summarized by the municipality):

In summer, dogs may bathe on the designated stretch east of Lilleskog, at Kabusa when no shooting exercises are running on the range there, and at Hagestad reserve on a lead. More in dogs in Swedish nature.

Warning — undertow: The municipality warns that underwater currents are common on these sand beaches and that people drown every year. Walk, don’t swim, on the way out so you feel a current early. If one takes you, don’t fight toward the shore; swim parallel to it until you are free. Ferry wash can also arrive suddenly, and Sandhammaren has strong currents and shifting sandbanks. Water is sampled regularly, but not daily and not at every beach at once. If the water looks green or murky, stay out, especially with children or dogs.

Beyond Ystad: Ales Stenar, Österlen and the ferries

Ales Stenar, the 59-stone ship setting on the ridge above Kåseberga, is about 14 km south-east. Riksantikvarieämbetet, the national heritage board, dates it to about AD 600–1000. It is free and always open. Bus 322 runs from Ystad on weekdays, plus weekend and holiday trips 1 May–30 September; the Ales Stenar guide has the path and the tent rule. East of that lies Österlen, reached on the same train to Simrishamn. Hikers can start Skåneleden’s SL4 Österlen, a 188 km trail, in Ystads Sandskog.

For ferries from Denmark and Bornholm, check in 10 minutes before departure; foot passengers board at Hamntorget 2. Sweden runs internal border controls until 11 November 2026, and the operator says to bring a passport. Polish sailings are in ferries from Poland.

Mistakes to avoid

• Arriving on a Monday: Klostret is shut, and the art museum opens Mondays only in summer.
• Bringing a dog to a town beach in summer: use the dog beach instead.
• Changing trains at Ystad for Simrishamn: line 6 runs through.
• Paying cash at Klostret: it is cashless.
• Believing Wallander ended in 2016: new films were shot in 2025.
• Hunting for Blue Flag beaches: none of Ystad’s are listed.

Can I bring my dog to the beach in Ystad?

Not to public bathing beaches from 1 June to 30 September; that is Ystad’s local ordinance. From 1 March to 20 August all dogs need extra supervision, in practice a lead, and in beach reserves always.

How much is the Klostret museum in Ystad?
