Skåne is where Sweden meets the continent: a bridge to Copenhagen, Danish castles, sand beaches, beech ridges and a cliff coast. This page sorts the region into six areas, flags the dated rules and sends you to the in-depth guide for each.
When you need this
You are deciding whether Skåne fits a trip, and which part of it: the cities, the coast, the forest or Österlen. You may be flying into Copenhagen and planning onward travel, or arriving from Denmark by train, car or ferry this autumn and wondering what ID the check asks for. Or you want a national park, a nature reserve, a beach or a trail you can reach without a car.
Skåne at a glance
Skåne (Scania in English) is Sweden’s southernmost county, or län. Statistics Sweden’s year-end figures make it a large, urban region by Swedish standards:

From Stockholm, SJ’s fastest trains take about 4.5 hours to Malmö. Inside the region, distances are short: Malmö to Ystad is about 60 km by road, and Copenhagen to Malmö 41 km.
A Danish past you can still see
Skåne was Danish until the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. That is not trivia; it is why the region’s oldest landmarks are Danish royal buildings. In Helsingborg, Kärnan is the keep of a Danish royal castle finished around 1320. In Malmö, Malmöhus castle was rebuilt for the Danish king Christian III in 1537–1542, and it stopped being a royal residence when Skåne became Swedish in 1658.
Older still is Ales Stenar, the 59-stone ship setting on the ridge above Kåseberga. Riksantikvarieämbetet, the national heritage board, dates it to about AD 600–1000; whether it was a grave or a sun calendar is unproven. The Viking sites guide puts it in national context.
Getting there
By air, via Copenhagen. For much of Skåne the practical airport is Copenhagen’s. Öresundståg trains leave from the station under Terminal 3 and reach Malmö in about 20 minutes, over the 15.9 km bridge-and-tunnel link that opened in 2000. By car. The Öresund Bridge is tolled: 470 DKK for a car up to 6 m at the toll station, per crossing, from 14 September 2026, and less online.
By ferry. Helsingør–Helsingborg takes 20 minutes and runs around the clock; Bornholm’s ferry reaches Ystad from Rønne in 80 minutes. Our guide to ferries from Denmark has the details.
The ID check from Denmark
Sweden runs temporary internal border control under a government decision from 12 May to 11 November 2026. Where you are checked depends on how you arrive:

Travelers from outside the EU need a passport issued within the last ten years and valid three months beyond departure. Keep it on you, not in the suitcase, and check for an extension before traveling after 11 November.
Getting around without a car
Skånetrafiken runs the region’s buses, trains and Lund’s tram. On green city buses in ten towns, and on the Lund tram, you can tap a bank card. Everywhere else you buy in the Skånetrafiken app or at a machine and activate the ticket before boarding. Children up to six ride free. The easy base is one of the Öresund cities — Malmö, Lund or Helsingborg — all on Öresundståg. From there:
- Dalby Söderskog: a bus stop sits at the park’s car park, about 10 km east of Lund.
- Söderåsen: bus 518 stops at both entrances, Skäralid and Röstånga.
- Ales Stenar: bus 322 runs from Ystad to Kåseberga, with extra weekend and holiday trips 1 May–30 September.
- Kullaberg: the nearest bus stop is Mölle, about 5 km from naturum; in summer buses run to the lighthouse.
- Skåneleden: Region Skåne says many stages start near a train or bus stop.
Six areas, six landscapes
Skåne is more varied than its reputation as flat farmland. Sweden’s flat sand beaches are mainly in Skåne and Halland, but parts of Skåne’s shore are cliff coast, and beech-forest ridges run across the middle.

National parks and Kullaberg
Inside a national park, allemansrätten (the right of public access) is narrower: dogs must be leashed, and a fire ban means no fire anywhere in the park.

Kullaberg is a naturreservat with its own regulations, and they bite: tents only at the manager’s designated place in the west or with a county-board permit in the east, no caravans or motorhomes, dogs leashed all year, and fires only at designated places, never during a fire ban. The designated overnight spots are shelters at Josefinelust and Himmelstorpsgården and a tent site by the main car park. From 1 March to 15 July each year, marked zones are closed on land and water. Western Kullaberg charges an entry fee in part of the year; while it does, walking in for free is allowed only by the path east of Djupadal.
For wheelchair users and prams, Kullaberg has accessible trails at naturum, Björkeröd and Möllemosse, and Söderåsen a 900-meter accessible loop around Skärdammen at Skäralid.
The county board also says the car parks at Kullaberg and Söderåsen are often full in holidays and at weekends. Its suggestion is the bus or the bike. The national parks overview and Skåneleden guide carry the detail; Skåneleden asks for dogs to be leashed all year in all three parks.
Beaches and the sea
Seven of Sweden’s eight Blue Flag beaches are in Skåne, among them Helsingborg’s Domsten and Skanör and Falsterbo in the south-west. Two sea hazards are specific to this coast. At Sandhammaren, the county board warns of strong currents and shifting sandbanks, and its reserve bans tents, motorhomes and fires. In Hanöbukten, off Österlen, upwelling can bring up water of 5–10 °C and drop the sea temperature by about 10 °C in a short time. Many beaches ban dogs 15 May–15 September under local rules. Mistakes to avoid
- Packing the passport before the Copenhagen Airport train — the check comes at Hyllie.
- Pitching a tent or parking a motorhome overnight in Kullaberg or at Sandhammaren.
- Expecting to buy a ticket on board Öresundståg.
- Driving to Kullaberg or Söderåsen on a summer weekend without a plan B.
- Calling Ales Stenar a Viking monument as fact: the heritage board’s range is AD 600–1000.
- Treating Skåne as one flat field: the north-west is cliff coast and the middle is forested ridge.

Is Skåne part of Sweden or Denmark?
Sweden. Skåne is Sweden’s southernmost county, with 1,433,083 residents in 33 municipalities at the end of 2025. It was Danish until the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, which is why its oldest landmarks — Helsingborg’s Kärnan, finished around 1320, and Malmöhus castle, rebuilt for the Danish king Christian III — are Danish royal buildings.
What is the best airport for Skåne?
For most of the region, Copenhagen. Öresundståg trains leave from the station under Terminal 3 and reach Malmö in about 20 minutes, continuing into Skåne. Which national parks are in Skåne?
Three. Söderåsen is a beech-forest ridge cut by ravines, reached by bus 518. Stenshuvud, on the Österlen coast south of Kivik, has a 97-meter hill with sea views. Dalby Söderskog, about 10 km east of Lund, is Sweden’s smallest national park at 36 hectares and is known for spring flowers. None lists an entry ticket.

Riksantikvarieämbetet, the national heritage board, dates the 59-stone ship setting to about AD 600–1000; the grave and sun-calendar explanations are both unproven. It stands 32 meters above the sea on the ridge above Kåseberga, about 14 km south-east of Ystad, is free and always open, and Skåneleden’s SL4 trail passes through the area.
