Skane Public Transport: Getting Around Malmo and Beyond

Skåne is easy to cover without a car, but it doesn’t work like Stockholm. There are zones, tapping your card only works in town, and the discounts only come through the app. Here is the system as Skånetrafiken itself describes it, checked in September 2026.

When you need this

You have come in from Copenhagen Airport and are standing at Malmö C, or you are at a Helsingborg bus stop with nothing but a bank card. Maybe you are planning day trips to Lund, Ystad or Österlen. Or you are traveling with children and wondering what they pay (under-7s pay nothing).

One operator, many vehicles

Skånetrafiken, part of Region Skåne, runs all public transport in the county under one ticket system. Private contractors drive the vehicles, but the ticket, the app and the rules are Skånetrafiken’s.

Lund’s tram opened in December 2020 and runs from the central station past the university hospital and LTH to ESS. It is the only tram in Skåne.

Where tapping your card works — and where it doesn’t

This is the rule that catches visitors. You can tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard on the green city buses in Malmö, Lund, Helsingborg, Hässleholm, Trelleborg, Kristianstad, Eslöv, Ängelholm, Landskrona and Ystad, and on the Lund tram. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay work too, if they are linked to a Visa or Mastercard.

A tap buys a full-price adult ticket for that town’s city zone, valid for one hour. Tap several times in 24 hours and you pay for at most two singles; the system turns your first tap into a 24-hour ticket automatically.

Three limits apply:

1. One card, one ticket. Each traveler needs their own card, or an app ticket.
2. No discounts. Children, students and seniors pay the adult price by tapping.
3. City buses and the tram only. You cannot tap on the yellow regional buses or on trains. Skånetrafiken announced a regional-bus pilot in May 2026, but had not said where or when it will start.

Take the card out of your wallet before you tap. The reader can charge the wrong card if several are held against it. If an inspector comes, you just show the card you tapped.

Zones and which ticket to buy

Unlike Stockholm, Skåne prices by zone. You never have to work the zone out yourself: enter your from and to stops in the Skånetrafiken app and it sizes the zone for you. Include every stop where you change, because every stop must be inside the zone.

You can travel as much as you like within the zone during that time. Your last change has to fall inside the validity; the trip itself can finish after it.

Then pick the ticket:

• Single (enkelbiljett) for one trip.
• 24-hour ticket, which costs exactly the same as two singles. For any same-day return, it is the obvious choice.
• 30-day ticket, half price throughout 2026 within Skåne and to Copenhagen.

Buy in the app (Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay), at a ticket machine at any train station in Skåne, or at Copenhagen Airport and Copenhagen Central. Customer-service centers in Malmö, Lund, Helsingborg and Kristianstad, and agents such as Pressbyrån, sell tickets too — and they are the only places that still take cash. Activate an app ticket before you board; on a bus, hold it to the reader, and on a train, show it to the conductor.

Tourist tickets and Copenhagen

For two busy days, look at the 48-hour Tourist Ticket Skåne: unlimited travel on all of Skåne’s buses, trains and the Lund tram from the moment you activate it. It is sold in the app or on a reskort (Skånetrafiken’s travel card) at customer-service centers and agents, and it takes the usual child, senior and group discounts. It also comes with partner offers.

The Tourist Ticket Öresund adds the Danish side of the sound, including the Copenhagen Metro, for 48 hours. It is sold only in the app.

For a single trip to Copenhagen, a Skånetrafiken single or 24-hour ticket to Denmark also covers the Metro and Danish local transport in the zone you bought. A ticket bought only for Skåne does not. Coming back, carry a passport or national ID card: Sweden’s internal border control runs to 11 November 2026, and police check train passengers at Hyllie. Trains between Lund, Malmö and Copenhagen keep running through the night, roughly hourly in the small hours.

Children, discounts and groups

Skåne is generous to families, but none of these discounts applies to a tapped card:

Skånetrafiken’s English web page still says 50% for young people. The Swedish price page, and the price of the children’s tourist ticket, show that the current discount is 40%.

Bikes, dogs, strollers and luggage

• Bikes ride free on trains within Skåne if there is room, with at most six per Pågatåg or Öresundståg train. They are not allowed on city buses or the Lund tram. Yellow regional buses carry bikes only on an outside rack. Between 15 June and 15 August that is any day; at other times Skånetrafiken limits it to weekends and holidays, 04:00–23:00. E-bikes are too heavy for the racks. Crossing to Denmark, a bike needs its own ticket.
• Dogs and other small pets: two per traveler ride free, on the floor, at the back of the bus or in the train’s marked section.
• Strollers: green city buses take up to four, yellow regional buses up to two, space permitting.
• Child seats: newer regional buses have two fold-out seats for children of about 1 to 4 years.
• Luggage is free. The middle carriage of the trains is the best place for big bags.

Ticket inspections and the surcharge

Inspectors check on every route, sometimes in plain clothes with an ID badge. Travel without a valid ticket and Skånetrafiken charges a tilläggsavgift (surcharge) of 1,500 kronor. The legal basis is Lag (1977:67), which also forbids the surcharge when a missing ticket is excusable, naming unfamiliarity with local conditions as one ground. Students who are fined only for lacking their student ID can get the surcharge written off by showing their documents at a customer-service center within five working days. There is a 100 kr fee.

Mistakes to avoid

• Tapping on a regional bus. Tapping works only on city buses and the Lund tram.
• Paying for children under 7. They ride free in Skåne, no ticket.
• Tapping for the whole family. Tapping is full adult price per card; the app gives youth and group discounts.
• Two singles for a same-day return. The 24-hour ticket costs the same and covers every trip.
• Using a Danish Rejsekort to Lund. It only works as far as Malmö C, Hyllie or Triangeln.
• Expecting zones to work like Stockholm. They don’t: Skåne has zones, Stockholm has none.

Can I pay with my bank card on buses in Malmö?

Yes, on the green city buses. Tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard, or a phone wallet linked to one, on the reader and you get a full-price adult ticket for the city zone, valid for one hour. It works the same way in nine other Skåne towns and on the Lund tram. It does not work on yellow regional buses or trains.

What is the best ticket for tourists in Skåne?

It depends on how far you roam. For one city, tap your card or buy singles in the app. For a same-day return, a 24-hour ticket costs the same as two singles. For two days of trips across Skåne, the 48-hour Tourist Ticket Skåne; add Copenhagen with the Tourist Ticket Öresund, which is sold only in the app.

How do zones work on Skånetrafiken?

The price depends on the zone you travel in: a small zone about 8 km across, a medium zone of 35 km, a town’s city zone, or all of Skåne. You never pick it yourself; enter your stops in the app and it sizes the zone. Every stop where you board, change or get off must lie inside it.

Do children travel free in Skåne?

Children under 7 travel free within Skåne and need no ticket. Ages 7 to 19 get 40% off every ticket, and a family traveling on one ticket gets a further 25% group discount. Discounts are not available by tapping a bank card, so buy children’s tickets in the app. To Denmark, only two under-7s ride free per adult.

Can I use my Skånetrafiken ticket in Copenhagen?

Yes, if it is a ticket to Denmark. Single and 24-hour tickets bought to Copenhagen are also valid on the Copenhagen Metro and on Danish local and regional transport within the zone you bought. The 48-hour Tourist Ticket Öresund covers the whole Danish side of the sound. A ticket bought only for Skåne is not valid in Denmark.

What is the fine for traveling without a ticket in Skåne?

Skånetrafiken charges a surcharge, the tilläggsavgift, of 1,500 kronor, the amount in force since May 2021 and checked in September 2026. Inspections happen on every route, sometimes by plain-clothes inspectors with ID badges. Swedish law forbids the surcharge when the missing ticket is excusable, including unfamiliarity with local conditions, so dispute it in writing if that applies.

Can I take a bike on trains and buses in Skåne?

On trains within Skåne, yes, free and space permitting; Pågatåg and Öresundståg each take at most six bikes. Bikes are not allowed on city buses or the Lund tram. Yellow regional buses carry them only on an outside rack, with limits outside summer. Crossing to Denmark, your bike needs its own ticket.
