Sweden has real sand beaches, dunes included, but only on some coasts. Here’s which coast gives you what, how to check the sea temperature before you go, which jellyfish to avoid, and why the Blue Flag is almost no help here.
When you need this
You’re choosing which coast to base a summer trip on, or wondering how cold the sea will be. You’ve seen a big red or orange jellyfish at a west-coast beach, or someone just got stung. You’re bringing a dog, or you went looking for Blue Flag beaches and found almost none.
Sand or rock: pick your coast
Most of Sweden’s coastline is rock and moraine. SGU, the Geological Survey of Sweden, places the flat sandy beaches mainly in Skåne and Halland and on Gotland and Öland. Everywhere else, the “beach” is usually a smooth rock slab or a jetty.
| Coast | What the shore is like | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Skåne (south) | Long sand beaches and dunes; cliff coast in places | Sandhammaren, Falsterbo, Skanör |
| Halland (southwest) | Flat sand | About 12 km at Mellbystrand–Skummeslöv |
| Bohuslän (west, north of Lysekil) | Granite: bohusgranit, about 920 million years old | Rock slabs and jetties |
| Gotland and Öland | Limestone islands with sand beaches and cliff coasts (klintkust) | Tofta, Sudersand on Gotland |
| Stockholm and east-coast archipelagos | Rock and moraine shores | Rocks and jetties |
Sandhammaren, on Skåne’s south coast, is a nature reserve with large dunes and a long sand beach. The reserve’s rules ban camping, caravans and motorhomes, fires, driving off designated roads and unleashed dogs.
Halland is flat sand. Laholm municipality has about 12 km of sandy beach at Mellbystrand and Skummeslöv, with an accessible jetty that has a ramp and a bathing platform, and beach wheelchairs you can borrow through the tourist office or Fritidsbanken.
Gotland has 39 bathing places run by Region Gotland, including Tofta and Sudersand.
On rock coasts, you swim under allemansrätten, the right of public access: from any shore that isn’t part of a private garden (tomt). Bird and seal sanctuaries close landing at certain times of year, marked with yellow or red-and-yellow signs.
How warm is the sea?
There’s a daily forecast for this. HaV (Havs- och vattenmyndigheten, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management) shows a water-temperature forecast for every sea bathing place on its bathing-water service at havochvatten.se/badvatten, based on the EU’s Copernicus service and updated daily. Lakes don’t get one.
The south is warmer than the north. SMHI, the weather agency, gives an example day in late August 2022 with about 20 °C in the south and 14 °C in the north.
The catch is upwelling (uppvällning). When wind blows from land, or along the coast in the right direction, it pushes the warm surface layer out to sea and pulls up water of 5–10 °C from below. SMHI documents drops of about 10 °C. It happens on all Swedish coasts but is strongest in Hanöbukten (Skåne–Blekinge) and around Gotland, and weakest on the west coast. On the east coast in summer, winds between west and south trigger it. So check the forecast on the day, not a week earlier, and expect cold water on an offshore-wind day. More in cold-water safety.
Jellyfish
1177, Sweden’s health advice service, names three jellyfish to avoid along Swedish coasts, most common in summer and autumn:
| Swedish | English | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| röd brännmanet | red lion’s mane | Yellow, orange or reddish, many long threads that sting hard |
| blå brännmanet | blue lion’s mane | Stings, less intensely |
| kompassmanet | compass jellyfish | Occasional visitor; can sting quite badly |
| öronmanet | moon jellyfish | Transparent with four rings; doesn’t sting noticeably |
According to HaV, the stinging species are a west-coast issue, in the salty Skagerrak and Kattegat. In the Baltic, the moon jellyfish is the common one in the south, and red lion’s mane keeps to deeper, saltier water.
If you’re stung, 1177’s advice:
- Rinse with seawater, not tap water. Tap water can make the stinging cells release more venom, so skip the beach shower.
- Scrape off remaining threads with something stiff, like a bank card, or lift them with wide tape.
- Take paracetamol or ibuprofen for the pain.
- Seek care at once if the sting is in the eye, the skin reaction spreads, or you get a fever.
Symptoms are redness, burning, swelling, pain that can get severe, nausea and superficial burns. 1177’s first aid doesn’t mention vinegar, so neither do we. For medical help see 1177 medical advice.
Water quality and Blue Flag
Sea beaches are tested like lake beaches. Under the Bathing Water Ordinance, each municipality samples its registered bathing waters in season, classifies them and informs the public on site. If quality is poor it must advise against swimming; it doesn’t ban it. For the 2026 season, HaV rated 82% of Sweden’s 480 EU bathing waters, lakes and sea together, as excellent. Results take several days, so the posted sample isn’t live. The full system is explained in swimming in Swedish lakes.
Don’t look for Blue Flags. The Swedish programme, run by Blå Flagg Sverige, lists just 8 beaches and 13 harbors: the same count it announced for 2025. Seven of the beaches are in Skåne, among them Falsterbo, Skanör and Kämpinge; the eighth is Trosa. Flags are applied for every year with an inspection, and most good Swedish beaches simply don’t apply. A missing flag says nothing about the water. HaV’s classification covers every EU bathing water and is the better signal.
Cyanobacterial blooms happen at sea too and look the same as in a lake: a film, streaks, murky water. The Baltic gets its own guide: algal blooms in the Baltic.
Dogs, cars and local rules
Dog rules at beaches are local, and the next town’s may differ in both dates and hours:
| Place | Rule |
|---|---|
| Stockholm | No dogs on marked bathing areas 1 June – 31 August; guide, service and signal dogs exempt |
| Region Gotland | No dogs at named bathing places, including Visby Havsbad, 1 May – 30 September |
| Laholm (Mellbystrand–Skummeslöv) | Dogs only 18:00–08:00 from 1 May to 15 September, always leashed; Kattvägen allows leashed dogs year-round |
| Nature, nationwide | Dogs must not run loose where there is game, 1 March – 20 August |
Details on the national rule are in leash rules in Sweden.
Don’t drive on the sand. Since 1 June 2024, Laholm’s beach legally counts as terrain, so driving on it needs a permit. Sandhammaren bans motor vehicles off designated roads.
Safety
- Never swim alone, and skip alcohol near water. Both are on the Swedish Life Saving Society’s list of safety rules. In an emergency, call 112.
- Open sandy coasts can have strong currents. Länsstyrelsen, the county board, notes strong currents and constantly shifting sandbanks off Sandhammaren.
- Beach staff are seasonal where they exist. Laholm’s strandvärdar — students trained by the rescue service for a first response, not lifeguards — work weeks 26–32 only.
- The water isn’t sun protection. Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten, the radiation safety authority, says UV passes through water.
Life jackets and lifeguards in general are covered in swimming safety in Sweden.

FAQ
Does Sweden have good sandy beaches?
Yes, but mostly in the south and on the islands. SGU, the geological survey, places Sweden’s flat sandy beaches mainly in Skåne and Halland and on Gotland and Öland. Halland’s Mellbystrand–Skummeslöv runs about 12 km. Bohuslän and the archipelagos are rock coasts, where swimming happens off granite slabs and jetties instead.
How warm is the sea in Sweden in summer?
It varies by coast and by wind. SMHI’s example day in late August 2022 had about 20 °C in the south and 14 °C in the north. Offshore winds can bring up 5–10 °C water from below, especially in Hanöbukten and around Gotland. HaV’s bathing-water service gives a daily temperature forecast for each sea bathing place.
Are there dangerous jellyfish in Sweden?
Not deadly ones, but three sting: red lion’s mane, blue lion’s mane and compass jellyfish, which 1177 says to avoid. They are mainly a west-coast issue, commonest in summer and autumn. The clear moon jellyfish, found on the west coast and in the southern Baltic, does not sting noticeably. Red lion’s mane can be yellow, orange or reddish with long trailing threads.
What should I do if a jellyfish stings me?
Rinse with seawater, not tap water, which 1177 says can release more venom. Scrape off remaining threads with a stiff card, or lift them with wide tape. Paracetamol or ibuprofen helps with pain. Seek care at once if the sting is in the eye, the skin reaction spreads, or you get a fever.
How many Blue Flag beaches does Sweden have?
Very few. Blå Flagg Sverige lists 8 beaches and 13 harbors, the same count as 2025, seven of the beaches in Skåne, including Falsterbo, Skanör and Kämpinge, plus Trosa. Most Swedish beaches never apply, so no flag is not a warning. HaV’s water classification covers all 480 EU bathing waters and is the better guide.
Can I bring my dog to the beach in Sweden?
Check the local rule; it differs. Stockholm bans dogs at marked bathing areas 1 June–31 August. Gotland bans them at named bathing places 1 May–30 September. Laholm allows leashed dogs only 18:00–08:00 from 1 May to 15 September. In nature, dogs must not run loose where there is game from 1 March to 20 August.
