The city in four places
Malmö had 367,924 residents on 31 December 2025, 2,280 more than a year earlier. The city calls itself Sweden’s third-largest and says people from 187 countries besides Sweden live there. For a visitor it comes down to four places close together, plus the beach:

On Stortorget, the town hall on the east side was finished in 1547 and was then the largest in the Nordic countries. On Lilla Torg, the red half-timbered Hedmanska gården is Malmö’s best-preserved 16th-century timber-frame house.
Getting there
Via Copenhagen Airport: Malmö’s practical international airport is Copenhagen’s. Öresundståg trains leave from the station under Terminal 3 and reach Malmö in about 20 minutes. No tickets are sold on board: buy one in the Skånetrafiken app, at a machine in the airport, or as a DSB ticket. A Danish Rejsekort only takes you as far as Malmö C, Hyllie or Triangeln. Via Malmö Airport: an airport coach runs between Malmö Airport and Malmö C; tickets are sold on the coach operator’s website.
From Stockholm: SJ’s fastest trains take about 4.5 hours.
By car over the bridge: the Öresund Bridge is tolled on the Swedish side at Lernacken. From 14 September 2026 a car up to 6 meters pays 470 DKK per crossing at the booth, less with an online ticket. The ID check at Hyllie
Sweden runs temporary internal border control on arrivals from Denmark. The current government decision runs from 12 May to 11 November 2026, and the Police Authority decides where and how checks happen. As of late September 2026 no newer decision has been published.

Non-EU visitors need a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid three months beyond departure. Nordic children traveling with a guardian who holds valid documents need no ID of their own at this check. The practical rule is simple: keep the passport or ID card on you, not in the suitcase. One date to note: on 9–10 October 2026, switch work at Malmö C means trains toward Denmark skip Triangeln and Hyllie. If you are heading for Copenhagen those days, board at Malmö C.
Getting around
Skånetrafiken runs the green city buses. You can tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard, or a phone wallet, on the reader for a one-hour adult ticket in the city zone. Three limits catch visitors:
- One ticket per card. Tapping once for two people buys one ticket.
- Full adult price only. Tapping gives no child or student discount.
- City zone only. For regional trips or 24-hour tickets, use the Skånetrafiken app.
Children aged 0–6 ride free without a ticket, and 7–19-year-olds get 40 percent off tickets bought in the app. The Skåne public transport guide has the zones and the fines.
Malmö by bike is the city’s bike-share: 1,000 bikes at 100 stations, open all year and around the clock. You register on the service’s website or app and buy a pass for a set period; check current prices there. The city says ten more stations arrive in autumn 2026 and that the service becomes free for 18–25-year-olds, in an announcement aimed at Malmö residents. Museums and free entry
Malmö museum runs Malmöhus castle, the Aquarium and Malmö Art Museum on the castle island, and the Museum of Technology and Maritime History. One combined ticket covers all four on the same day, and visitors aged 0–19 enter free.

Malmöhus castle ceased to be a royal residence when Skåne became Swedish in 1658, served as a prison from 1828 to 1909, and has housed the museum since 1937. Malmö museum is also closed on 1 January, 1 May, 19–20 June, 24–25 December and 31 December, and it asks visitors to pay by card. Accessibility note: the lift at Malmöhus is being replaced, which limits access to some exhibitions; wheelchair users should check which floors are reachable before going.
Form/Design Center sits in an old granary at Lilla Torg; the Swedish design guide puts it in context with Sweden’s other design museums.
Turning Torso, Santiago Calatrava’s 190-meter twisting tower in Västra hamnen, completed in November 2005, is a residential building. Its owner accepts no spontaneous visits, only booked appointments, so enjoy it from the waterfront.
Möllevångstorget holds a market Monday to Saturday, 07:00–15:00; it is closed on Sundays.
Ribersborg and the sea
Ribersborg is a 2 km shallow sand beach in central Malmö, with piers, an accessible bathing area, a nude-bathing area and a dog-bathing area. Its water holds the top “excellent” quality class, and the official bathing season in 2026 ran from 21 June to 20 August.
At the northern end stands Ribersborgs kallbadhus, a cold-bath house on a pier. It opened in 1898, has separate sections for men and women, has been run by the city since 1966 and is a protected building. The Swedish beaches guide compares Skåne’s sand with the rest of the coast.

Mistakes to avoid
- Packing the passport in the suitcase before the Copenhagen Airport train. You need it at Hyllie.
- Boarding Öresundståg to “buy on the train”. There are no tickets on board.
- Tapping your card for a child on a city bus. It buys a full adult ticket.
- Planning Malmöhus for a Monday outside school holidays.
- Expecting a viewing floor at Turning Torso. There is none for walk-in visitors.
