November gets sold as Sweden’s darkest, cheapest month. We checked both claims against Swedish weather and price statistics, and neither holds. Here’s what November is actually like, where the real savings are, and what’s on in 2026.
When you need this
You’re deciding between a November trip and waiting for December, or you’ve heard November is the bargain month and want to know if that’s true. You might be planning a city break around the first Christmas markets, heading north for the aurora before deep midwinter, or driving and wondering whether winter tyres apply yet. Or you just want to know what to do with afternoons that go dark at four.
It isn’t the darkest month. December is
SMHI, the Swedish weather agency, publishes sunshine normals for 1991–2020. At every one of its 22 stations, December has fewer sunshine hours than November. December’s days are shorter too: about 6 h 10 min in Stockholm in mid-December against 7 h 40 min in mid-November.
What November has is cloud. Stockholm’s November normal is 44.6 hours of sunshine for the whole month, about an hour and a half a day, against 279.5 hours in July. When an SMHI meteorologist tracked the first two weeks of November 2023 in Norrköping, cloud cover was 90–100% almost all the time, with barely seven hours of sun.
| Place | Daylight, mid-November | Sunshine, November (normal) | Sunshine, December (normal) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malmö / Lund | about 8 h 20 min | 47.3 h | 32.3 h |
| Stockholm | about 7 h 40 min | 44.6 h | 33.4 h |
| Östersund | — | 37.7 h | 22.1 h |
| Kiruna | about 5 h 05 min | 19.4 h | 0 h |
So November feels darkest because it’s grey. If you want less darkness, December isn’t the escape. For month-by-month daylight, see daylight hours and the clock change.
The price myth: November isn’t cheap for hotels
SCB, Statistics Sweden, publishes a monthly consumer price index for hotel and similar stays. We pulled three years of it. In 2023, 2024 and 2025, November hotel prices were 14–18% above January’s and within about 4% of July’s. January was the cheapest month in all three years, and December was also cheaper than November. The exact index values are in the practical information table below.
Demand tells the same story from the other side. Tillväxtverket, the agency that now runs Sweden’s accommodation statistics, reports that June to August held about 43% of all guest nights in 2025. November is quiet for leisure travel, but quiet doesn’t automatically mean cheap. The index is a national average and doesn’t explain itself, so individual cities and dates can differ. For how Swedish hotel pricing works, see our guide to Swedish hotels.
Where November does save money:
- Some attractions charge less off-season. The Vasa Museum, for example, has a lower adult price from October to April than in summer.
- The Stockholm archipelago runs on your transit card. From 14 September to 29 April, SL tickets valid 30 days or longer cover every Waxholmsbolaget boat line. Its autumn timetable runs until 12 December 2026. Details are in Stockholm archipelago ferries.
- Black Week has a built-in price check. A shop advertising a reduction must show its lowest price of the previous 30 days. See sales seasons in Sweden.
If price is the main goal, January is the cheaper month for a bed.
Two halves of the month
November splits cleanly in two.
1–20 November is the low point. The clocks went back on 25 October 2026, the autumn school holidays are over, and most of the country is waiting for Advent. That makes it a good time for unhurried museums, saunas and cafés, and a poor one for outdoor sightseeing. Plan time outside around the middle of the day; 1177, the national health service’s advice line, recommends midday walks, when it’s lightest.
From mid-November, the Christmas season starts. Liseberg’s Christmas opens in Gothenburg on 14 November. Kalmar Castle’s Christmas fair runs 26–29 November. Skansen’s Christmas market opens for its first weekend on 27 November, the same day as Black Friday, and the first Sunday of Advent is 29 November 2026. Restaurant julbord (Christmas buffet) season begins in late November; book ahead. See Christmas markets in Sweden and the julbord guide.
One warning for Stockholm: the Gamla stan Christmas market at Stortorget is still unconfirmed for 2026. In September, a local paper reported that police security demands threatened it, and on 14 October 2026 the organiser’s site still showed only the 2025 edition. Dates on travel lists are last year’s.
North and south are different months
| Region | November mean | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Skåne (Lund) | 5.2 °C, 61 mm | Grey, damp, mild; no meteorological winter on the normal |
| Stockholm | 3.6 °C, 48 mm | Cold and grey; winter usually arrives in late December |
| Inland Norrland (Östersund) | −0.9 °C | Winter normally arrives around 9 November |
| Lapland (Kiruna) | −6.8 °C | Winter since about 12 October; snow and short days |
These are SMHI’s 1991–2020 normals, and 24-hour means, so afternoons run warmer and nights colder.
In Lapland, November is the aurora’s sweet spot for darkness without polar night. The Kiruna-area season runs from September to March, and the most active displays often come between 21:00 and 23:00. The catch is cloud: Kiruna’s November sunshine normal is only 19.4 hours, and Abisko, in the mountains, gets 2.8. Polar night, when the sun doesn’t rise at all, begins near the December solstice and lasts about 27 days in Kiruna. See northern lights in Sweden and polar night.
Some northern highlights wait for December. ICEHOTEL 37 opens in Jukkasjärvi on 11 December 2026, and Åre’s ski area opens the same day.
In Skåne, the date to know is mårtensafton, 10 November: roast goose, traditionally preceded by svartsoppa (black soup). Isof, the national folklore institute, says the custom survives mainly in Skåne.
Getting around in November
Drivers: winter tyres become compulsory for cars, light vans and car-registered motorhomes on 1 December, when winter road conditions prevail. Snow often arrives earlier in the north, though, so consider them sooner. Studded tyres have been legal since 1 October. Heavy lorries and buses must have winter tyres from 10 November regardless of weather. See winter tyre rules.
Walkers: November brings the first freeze–thaw nights. Slipping is the most common cause of pedestrian falls in the road environment. And by 16:00 it’s dark: a driver on dipped beam sees you at 20–30 m in dark clothes and at about 125 m with a reflector. Reflectors are advice, not law. See walking on ice.
Forest walks: ticks aren’t finished. SVA, the national veterinary institute, gives March–November as the main tick season, so check yourself after an early-November walk.

FAQ
Is November a good time to visit Sweden?
It is a good time for quiet museums, city breaks, saunas and the aurora in Lapland, and a poor one for outdoor sightseeing. Expect grey skies, about 7 h 40 min of daylight in Stockholm and few crowds until late November. From mid-month the Christmas season starts: Liseberg on 14 November, Skansen’s market and Black Friday on 27 November 2026.
Is November the darkest month in Sweden?
No, December is. On SMHI’s 1991–2020 normals December has fewer sunshine hours than November everywhere, and its days are shorter: about 6 h 10 min in Stockholm in mid-December against 7 h 40 min in mid-November. November feels darkest because it is cloudy: Stockholm’s November normal is 44.6 hours of sun for the whole month.
Is November the cheapest month to visit Sweden?
Not for hotels. SCB’s consumer price index for hotel stays put November 2025 about 18% above January and slightly above July, and the pattern held in 2023 and 2024. January was the cheapest month in all three years. Some attractions do cut prices in the off-season, and archipelago boats accept long-period SL tickets, but check hotel rates before assuming a bargain.
