Stockholm to Lapland by Night Train

By road, Kiruna is further from Stockholm than a round trip to Malmö. Here are the four ways to cover that distance, what each one shows you, and a stop-over route for each.

When you need this

You’re heading from Stockholm to Kiruna, Abisko or elsewhere in Swedish Lapland and want to know whether to sleep on a train, fly, drive or take the slow summer railway. Maybe you want the journey to be part of the trip, with a stop on the way. Or your dates fall close to the 13 December 2026 timetable change and you need to know what that means for the night train.

The four ways compared

Stockholm is not in the middle of Sweden. Kiruna, the main town of Swedish Lapland, is about 1,235 km from the capital by road, which is about 16 hours of pure driving (our own routing measurement, with no stops). That distance is why the four options differ so much in days and daylight.

The night train is the title route for a reason. SJ runs one train a day each way between Stockholm and Narvik. It calls at Luleå (through cars), Boden, Gällivare, Kiruna and Abisko, and has seats, couchettes and sleepers. It saves you a hotel night and costs you no daylight. The catch: until 12 December 2026, you change trains at Boden at around 6 a.m. SJ expects the cars to run through again from 13 December 2026.

The flight is the fast option. SAS and Norwegian fly Stockholm Arlanda to Kiruna all year in about 90 minutes. Driving is the only way to see the coast, and it takes three days. Inlandsbanan is a sightseeing train, not transport, and it runs only in summer.

Route 1: the night train, with a stop-over

Evening, day 1 — leave Stockholm. Pick a seat, a berth in a six-berth couchette (liggvagn) or a sleeper compartment (sovvagn). Book when your season’s batch of tickets is released. Since April 2026 there is only one train a night, and winter berths sell first.

Morning, day 2 — Boden. Before 13 December 2026, you change trains here at around 6 a.m., so set an alarm. From 13 December the cars are due to run through.

Stop-over option: Luleå. The train keeps cars to and from Luleå, so you can get off there and spend a day in the city. Then continue north on a Norrtåg regional day train toward Kiruna. No dated source gives that leg’s travel time, so plan it in Resrobot, the national journey planner.

Stop-over option: Jokkmokk in early February. The Jokkmokk winter market runs Thursday to Saturday from the first Thursday of February, which means 4–6 February 2027. Get off at Murjek, between Boden and Gällivare, and take the road bus that connects with the trains.

Day 2 — Kiruna. The station is about 6 km from the centre and unstaffed. A free shuttle bus meets every train, so take it rather than walking into town.

Days 3–4 — Abisko. The same line continues to the Abisko Turiststation stop, opposite STF’s mountain station. Bus line 91 also runs Kiruna–Abisko–Riksgränsen, but only in its winter (February–May) and summer (June–September) seasons.

Home. Take the night train south, or fly Kiruna–Arlanda in about 90 minutes.

Route 2: fly up, train back

This open-jaw trip works all year and suits a short break.

Day 1 — fly Arlanda to Kiruna, about 90 minutes. Kiruna Airport is about 9 km from town. The airport bus is timed to flights and you pay on board. Domestic flights need ID: a regular ID card or driving licence is enough at Swedavia airports, though airlines may ask for other ID. More in our flights to Kiruna guide.

Onward to Abisko. It’s about 100 km from Kiruna, about 1.5 hours of pure driving, and car rental desks are at the airport for arrivals. The train or the seasonal line 91 also go there.

Last night — the night train south from Abisko or Kiruna. The journey home then costs no daylight.

Coming from abroad in winter? SAS flies Copenhagen–Kiruna three times a week (17 December 2026 – 7 March 2027) and Eurowings flies Düsseldorf–Kiruna on Saturdays (6 February – 20 March 2027), so you can skip Stockholm altogether.

Route 3: drive the coast in three days

All times below are pure driving from our own routing measurement, with no stops. Add breaks, and in winter add a lot more.

The first stop-over is the High Coast. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site because the land has risen 286 m since the ice left. Section 6 of the High Coast Trail, from Skuleberget, is the destination organisation’s suggested part-hike. See the High Coast guide for the area.

Winter changes the drive. From 1 December to 31 March, winter tyres are required whenever there is snow, ice, slush or frost on the road, and that applies to foreign-registered cars too. Studded tyres are allowed from 1 October to 15 April. Trafikverket, the transport administration, says to assume a winter trip takes considerably longer than normal, and quiet roads may keep a few centimetres of snow. Never overtake tandem snowploughs; Trafikverket calls it life-threatening. In storms, the E10 beyond Abisko can close or run in convoys behind a plough (kolonnkörning). Pack for the car. Bring a scraper, snow brush, shovel, blankets, warm clothes, food and a charged phone. Check Trafikverket’s road map for conditions and closures before each day. Driving an EV? Winter range can be 14–26% shorter even when you start warm, so plan charging with a margin.

Watch for reindeer. They stand on and beside roads in Lapland, and dawn and dusk are when animals are most on the move. Reindeer count as domestic animals, not game, but a collision must still be reported to the police. See wildlife collisions.

Route 4: Inlandsbanan in summer

Four days, mid-June to mid-August only. The guided train stops for meals and sights. Our Inlandsbanan guide has the full picture.

Shortcut: Snälltåget’s summer night train runs Stockholm–Östersund on Wednesdays and Saturdays (24 June – 4 October 2026). Take it and start on day 3. In Kiruna the midnight sun lasts from about 29 May to 14 July, so the long day north stays light from start to finish. Interrail covers Inlandsbanan fully, and 2027 booking opens in spring.

Season by season

• Late May to mid-July: midnight sun in Kiruna, the best light for the train and the drive.
• Mid-June to mid-August: Inlandsbanan season (15 June – 12 August in 2026).
• September to March: aurora season. In Kiruna, the aurora shows statistically on about every other clear night. See northern lights in Sweden.
• October to April: studded tyres allowed (1 October – 15 April).
• December to March: winter tyres required in winter conditions, and the most sought-after night-train season.
• Around midwinter: about 27 days without sunrise in Kiruna, so views from the train are few.
• 13 December 2026: new timetable; the Boden change is due to end.

How long does it take to get from Stockholm to Lapland?

It depends on the mode. The flight from Arlanda to Kiruna takes about 90 minutes. The night train leaves in the evening and arrives the next day. Driving is about 1,235 km, about 16 hours of pure driving, so plan three days. Inlandsbanan, in summer only, takes four days via Mora, Östersund and Gällivare.

Is the night train to Kiruna better than flying?

Better if you want to save a hotel night and some daylight; worse if you are short of time. The train is one a day, and until 12 December 2026 you change at Boden around 6 a.m. The flight takes about 90 minutes, all year. A good compromise is flying one way and taking the night train the other.

Can I drive from Stockholm to Kiruna?

Yes, on the E4 up the coast and the E10 inland: about 1,235 km and 16 hours of pure driving. Split it into three days, for example at the High Coast and Luleå. From 1 December to 31 March, winter tyres are required in winter conditions, and reindeer on the road are common in Lapland.

Where can I stop on the way from Stockholm to Lapland?

By car, the High Coast (about 490 km from Stockholm) and Luleå split the drive into three days of 4.5–6 hours. On the night train, you can get off at Luleå and continue by day train, or at Murjek for Jokkmokk’s February market. Inlandsbanan’s own stop-over is Östersund.

Does Inlandsbanan go all the way to Kiruna?

No. The guided summer train runs Mora–Östersund–Gällivare, and in 2026 it ran from 15 June to 12 August. From Gällivare you continue to Kiruna on the regular train line; plan that leg in Resrobot. Booking for 2027 opens in spring 2027, and Interrail covers the train fully.

What is the best time of year for the trip north?

For views from the train or car, late May to mid-July, when Kiruna has the midnight sun. For the aurora, September to March, when the long dark shows it on about every other clear night. Winter adds tyre rules and polar night around midwinter, and night-train berths sell out first.
