Sweden looks narrow on a map of Europe, so its length is easy to miss. Here is how big it really is, according to Statistics Sweden, and what that means for travel times between the south and Lapland.
When you need this
You’re building an itinerary with both Stockholm and Lapland in it, or deciding whether to drive, fly or take the train north. Maybe a map app has just told you Malmö to Kiruna is “only” a day’s drive. Or you’re wondering whether Kiruna runs on a different clock. It doesn’t.
How big Sweden is
Statistics Sweden (SCB) publishes three area figures, and most websites mix them up:
| Measure (1 January 2026) | Area |
|---|---|
| Land only | 409,629 km² |
| Land plus lakes and rivers | 450,020 km² |
| Everything, including Swedish sea territory | 531,925 km² |
Whichever figure you use, Sweden is larger than Germany, whose official area is about 357,700 km². It has far fewer people, though. SCB counted 10,610,500 at the end of June 2026, about 26 people per km² of land on average.
Many pages still quote 528,447 km² total and 407,340 km² of land. Those figures come from SCB’s 2012 recalculation. The numbers above are the current ones.
How long Sweden is
From Smygehuk on the south coast of Skåne to Treriksröset, the cairn where Sweden, Norway and Finland meet, is about 1,570 km in a straight line. Travel on the ground is longer. Roads and railways follow the coast and the river valleys, so Malmö to Kiruna is about 1,410 km as the crow flies but roughly 1,840 km by road. Snälltåget’s rail route from Malmö to Narvik is 2,156 km.
Stockholm is not in the middle. The halfway latitude between Sweden’s extreme points is about 62° N, in the forests just north of Sveg. Stockholm is at 59° N. By road, Kiruna is about twice as far from Stockholm (about 1,240 km) as Malmö is (about 610 km).
Swedes often measure distance in mil, the Swedish mile. It is 10 km, not a British or US mile, so “30 mil” means 300 km.
The north is big and empty
Norrbotten, the northernmost county, holds about 24% of Sweden’s land and only about 2.3% of its people. The municipality of Kiruna alone has 19,307 km² of land. That is more than the whole of Skåne county, with 11,007 km².
| Area | Land | People (mid-2026) | Per km² |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skåne county | 11,007 km² | about 1.43 million | about 130 |
| Norrbotten county | 97,973 km² | about 249,000 | about 2.5 |
| Kiruna municipality | 19,307 km² | about 22,400 | about 1 |
Nearly a quarter of all Swedes live in Stockholm county. This is why transport in the north runs on flights and a single night train a day rather than dense networks. It is also why a route that looks short on a phone map can take a full day.
Travel times: road, rail and air
This is the table that should shape your itinerary. Road times are pure driving time from a route planner, before fuel, meals, rest or winter weather.
| Route | Road (pure driving) | Train | Air |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malmö–Stockholm | about 610 km, about 7 h | about 4.5 h (SJ’s fastest) | SAS flies Malmö–Arlanda |
| Gothenburg–Stockholm | about 470 km, about 6 h | see the Stockholm–Gothenburg train | — |
| Stockholm–Kiruna | about 1,240 km, about 16 h | one night train a day | about 90 minutes |
| Malmö–Kiruna | about 1,840 km, 22–23 h | under a day on the one-off November 2026 aurora train | two flights via Arlanda |
The night train to Kiruna and Abisko runs once a day since April 2026. Until 12 December 2026 it involves a change at Boden around 6 a.m., and SJ expects through cars from 13 December. The details are in our night train to Lapland guide. In November 2026, Snälltåget’s one-off aurora train leaves Malmö at 13:15 on 23 November and reaches Kiruna at 13:00 the next day.
For Malmö to Lapland, the quickest route is usually two flights via Arlanda. The Arlanda–Kiruna leg takes about 90 minutes in the air. Compare both in our guide to domestic flights in Sweden.
Crossing the border can be quicker than staying in Sweden. From Kiruna, Norway’s Evenes airport is about three hours by car.
One time zone, very different daylight
All of Sweden runs on one time zone. By ordinance, Swedish normal time is UTC plus one hour, and summer time (UTC+2) applies across the country from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. The next change back is 25 October 2026. Finland is one hour ahead, which matters if you cross at Haparanda–Tornio.
Daylight is what changes with latitude:
- Midsummer: Kiruna has midnight sun from about 29 May to 14 July, and southern Sweden gets days of about 17 hours.
- Midwinter: Kiruna has about 27 days without sunrise, and even the far south has only about 7 hours of daylight.
- Spring and autumn: in the far north, the day changes by more than ten minutes each day, so a March drive has far more light than a December one.
Mistakes to avoid
- Planning Stockholm to Kiruna as a quick drive. It is about 1,240 km. Fly or take the night train.
- Trusting a map app’s driving time. Those times leave out every stop. Malmö–Kiruna shows 22–23 hours, which is three days for most drivers.
- Assuming Stockholm is central. It is in the southern third. Treat the north as a separate leg of at least a day each way.
- Driving the whole length “to see the country.” Most of the route is forest. The scenery you came for is at the ends. Fly or take the train north, then rent a car there.
- Reading “Sweden in a week” as all of Sweden. Choose one or two regions — the south, the Stockholm–Gothenburg belt or the north — and link them by train or plane.

FAQ
How long is Sweden from north to south?
About 1,570 km in a straight line, from Smygehuk on the south coast of Skåne to Treriksröset, where Sweden, Norway and Finland meet. On the ground it is further: Malmö to Kiruna is roughly 1,840 km by road, and Snälltåget’s Malmö–Narvik train covers 2,156 km of track. Stockholm sits in the southern third, not the middle.
How long does it take to get from Stockholm to Kiruna?
About 90 minutes by air, with SAS and Norwegian flying daily year-round. The night train takes a night and a morning, and until 12 December 2026 involves a change at Boden around 6 a.m. By road it is roughly 1,240 km, about 16 hours of pure driving before any stops, so realistically two days.
Can you drive from Malmö to Kiruna?
You can, but it is roughly 1,840 km and 22–23 hours of pure driving before fuel, food or rest: in practice three days, more in winter darkness. Most visitors fly or take the train north and rent a car locally. Snälltåget’s one-off aurora train in November 2026 covers Malmö to Kiruna in under a day.
How many time zones does Sweden have?
One. The whole country runs on Swedish normal time, UTC+1, and switches to summer time, UTC+2, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October; the next change is 25 October 2026. Finland is one hour ahead, which matters at the Haparanda–Tornio border. What changes with latitude is daylight, not the clock.
How big is Sweden compared to Germany?
Larger. Statistics Sweden gives a land area of about 409,600 km², or about 450,000 km² including lakes and rivers; Germany’s official area is about 357,700 km². But Sweden has only about 10.6 million people, most of them in the south, so the north feels empty: Norrbotten has nearly a quarter of the land and just over 2% of the people.
How many people live in Sweden?
About 10.6 million. Statistics Sweden counted 10,610,500 people at the end of June 2026. That averages about 26 people per km² of land, but the spread is extreme: about 130 per km² in Skåne and about 2.5 in Norrbotten, the largest county. Nearly a quarter of all Swedes live in Stockholm county.
