Two of the airports sold as “Stockholm” are an hour and a half from the city. Here is who still flies from each in 2026, how the transfer works, and the coach change at Västerås that strands people off Spain flights.

When you need this

You found a cheap “Stockholm” fare and the airport code on the ticket is NYO or VST. Or you are comparing that fare with Arlanda and want to know what the transfer really costs in time. Or you land in the evening and need to know whether anything still runs into the city.

It also matters if you are working from an older guide. Much of what is published about these two airports describes a situation that ended years ago.

Two “Stockholm” airports that are not in Stockholm

Stockholm Skavsta lies 7 km outside Nyköping, about 100 km south-west of the capital. Stockholm Västerås sits at Hässlö, about 5 km east of central Västerås and roughly 110 km west of Stockholm. Both took the city’s name to join STO, the booking code for Stockholm airports, so a flight search for “Stockholm” can put you at either without the town’s name appearing on the fare.

AirportCodeDistance from StockholmCoach to CityterminalenTown nearby
Stockholm SkavstaNYOabout 100 km south-westabout 80 min, timed to flightsNyköping, 7 km
Stockholm VästeråsVSTabout 110 km westabout 80 min, London flights onlyVästerås, 5 km

Both are small. Skavsta handled about 365,000 passengers in 2024 and Västerås about 88,000 in 2025, a fraction of what Arlanda moves. Small also means terminals that open around flights rather than all day.

Who flies from Skavsta and Västerås in 2026

Ryanair no longer flies from Skavsta. It moved its Stockholm operation to Arlanda from autumn 2021 and is not on the airport’s airline list. Pages that still call Skavsta “Ryanair’s Stockholm airport” are years out of date.

In October 2026 Skavsta lists two scheduled airlines:

  • Wizz Air — Warsaw, Belgrade and Cluj-Napoca. Its Bucharest route moved to Arlanda from 30 March 2026.
  • Norwegian — Alicante, Málaga and seasonal Palma, plus Las Palmas every Monday from 26 October 2026 to 29 March 2027.
  • Charters sold by tour operators, such as Ving to Gran Canaria this winter and Quality Travel to Andorra in the February 2027 school holiday.

Västerås is a one-airline airport. Ryanair flies to London Stansted all year and to Alicante and Málaga from April to October, according to the airport’s own destination page. The winter timetable from 25 October 2026 has London flights on Fridays and Sundays. The airport itself notes that the airline can change times at short notice, so its timetable is the one that counts.

Skavsta to Stockholm

The Vy flygbussarna coach (still widely called Flygbussarna) is the default. It waits outside the terminal, leaves about 20 to 45 minutes after your flight lands, and reaches Cityterminalen, the coach terminal at Stockholm C, in about 80 minutes. Towards Stockholm the operator says the coach waits for delayed flights.

Buy the ticket online or in the operator’s app, which the airport says is the cheapest channel. A ticket is valid for any departure within three months, so buy it before you fly. You can also pay at the airport or on board — by card only. Children up to 7 ride free, up to four per paying adult.

Without the coach, take lokalbuss (local bus) 515 from Sörmlandstrafiken to Nyköping’s train and bus stations, about 15 minutes, then a Mälartåg regional train to Stockholm, about an hour. Buy the bus ticket in the app, at Pressbyrån in the terminal or by card on board; there is no cash on Swedish buses.

Driving or being collected? Leave the E4 at exit 133, Trafikplats Hållet, and follow signs about 7 km.

Västerås to Stockholm

This is where 2026 changed things. Since 29 June 2026, Vy flygbussarna runs to Västerås only in connection with the London Stansted flights. The coach takes about 80 minutes to Cityterminalen; at the Stockholm end, check the departure board for its gate.

Warning: Landing from Alicante or Málaga? There is no coach waiting. Take the bus and train instead, and check the last train before you fly.

For every other flight, take VL city bus 3 from the main entrance to Västerås central station. It runs every ten minutes on weekdays and takes about ten minutes; tap a bank card on board or use VL’s app. From the station, regional trains to Stockholm leave at least hourly, some hours every half hour.

Two practical details: Västerås airport has no ATM and no currency exchange, and flights to London need a UK ETA for visa-exempt travelers, children included. Ryanair accepts only a passport or national ID card.

Flying out: timing and early starts

Work back from the take-off time, not from the coach’s departure.

  • Skavsta: the coach operator recommends a departure from Cityterminalen about three hours before your flight.
  • Västerås: the terminal opens three hours before departure; bag drop and security open two hours before and close 40 minutes before.
  • Both: the terminals open around flights. Neither is a place to wait overnight for an early departure.

Warning: The coach is timed to flights, but the bus-and-train fallback runs to a timetable that thins out in the evening and on holidays. Check the last train from Nyköping or Västerås before an evening landing.

Arriving at Skavsta from outside Schengen — Belgrade, in 2026 — you pass a border check. The police offer voluntary pre-registration in the Travel to Europe app for Skavsta arrivals; see our EES border checks guide.

Taxis

A taxi works, but it is a long ride of 100 km or more, and Swedish taxi prices are not set by law. Every car displays a jämförpris (comparison price) for a standard 10 km, 15-minute trip, which tells you little about a trip this long. Pre-book and agree a fast pris (fixed price) before the car moves.

At Skavsta, pre-booked taxis wait on the left of the taxi zone and unbooked ones on the right. At Västerås, taxis wait at the main entrance. The full system is in our guide to taxis in Sweden.

FAQ

How far is Skavsta airport from Stockholm?

About 100 km. Skavsta sits 7 km outside Nyköping, south-west of the capital, and the Vy flygbussarna coach to Cityterminalen takes about 80 minutes. The alternative is local bus 515 to Nyköping, about 15 minutes, and a regional train to Stockholm, about an hour. Budget at least 90 minutes from landing to the city centre.

Does Ryanair still fly from Skavsta?

No. Ryanair moved its Stockholm operation to Arlanda from autumn 2021 and no longer appears on Skavsta’s airline list. In October 2026 the airport lists Norwegian and Wizz Air, plus charter flights sold by tour operators. Ryanair still serves Västerås, and Wizz Air moved its Bucharest route from Skavsta to Arlanda in March 2026.

Does Västerås airport still have international flights?

Yes, but only a handful. Ryanair is the only scheduled airline: London Stansted all year, and Alicante and Málaga from April to October, according to the airport’s destination page. From 25 October 2026 the winter London flights run on Fridays and Sundays. Check the airline’s own timetable, because the airport says times can change at short notice.

Is there an airport bus from Västerås to Stockholm?

Only for some flights. Vy flygbussarna runs between Västerås airport and Cityterminalen in about 80 minutes, but since 29 June 2026 the airport says the coach runs only in connection with the London Stansted flights. For the Spain flights, take VL city bus 3 to Västerås central station, about ten minutes, and a regional train to Stockholm.

Will the airport coach wait if my flight is late?

From Skavsta towards Stockholm, yes: Vy flygbussarna says the coach is timed to arrivals and waits for delayed flights. The Norrköping–Linköping coach keeps its timetable, except the last evening departure, which waits. Flying out, the operator recommends a coach leaving Cityterminalen about three hours before your Skavsta take-off.

Can I take a taxi from Skavsta or Västerås to Stockholm?

Yes, but it is a long ride of 100 km or more, and Swedish taxi prices are not set by law. Every car displays a jämförpris, a comparison price for a standard short trip, which says little about a trip this long. Pre-book and agree a fixed price before you set off. At Skavsta, pre-booked cars wait on the left of the taxi zone.

What does “Stockholm (STO)” mean when I book a flight?

STO is a code for several Stockholm airports, not one airport. Skavsta (NYO) and Västerås (VST) are both included in it alongside Arlanda and Bromma, even though Skavsta lies about 100 km south-west and Västerås about 110 km west of the capital. Check the three-letter airport code on your booking before you plan the transfer.

  • Arlanda to Stockholm — where Ryanair’s Stockholm base and Wizz Air’s Bucharest route moved — and the faster transfer from there.
  • Stockholm Bromma airport — the fourth airport inside the STO code.
  • Getting to Sweden — every route into the country compared, before you choose an airport.
  • Stockholm — what to do once the coach drops you at Cityterminalen.
  • Taxis in Sweden — the jämförpris system and how to agree a fare.
