Pick your Malmö base by the station at your door, the airport link, what opens below your window at 07:00 and what is being built next door. Here are seven areas, plus the airport and two alternative cities, judged on exactly that, with no hotel names.
When you need this
You are booking a first Malmö stay and the map shows names you don’t know. Maybe you are flying into Copenhagen or Malmö Airport (Sturup), or coming for a concert at Malmö Arena, a fair at Malmömässan or Malmöfestivalen. You may want the beach, or a market square and evening venues. Or you are traveling with children, a stroller, a bike or limited mobility, and the walk from the station matters.
How the city fits together
Malmö is compact, and the areas visitors choose between hang off one rail line: the City Tunnel (Citytunneln). It runs from Malmö C under the city to Triangeln and on to Hyllie, where the tracks split toward the Öresund Bridge and southern Skåne. Öresundståg trains to Copenhagen stop at all three, so the station under your hotel decides how easy the airport trip is.
The visitor’s map has three parts:
- The north: the old town (Gamla staden) around Stortorget and Lilla Torg, with Malmö C and the Malmö Live concert hall on its edge.
- The middle: Triangeln and, next to it, Möllevången (Möllan to locals) around its market square and Folkets Park.
- The sea and the south: Västra Hamnen (the Western Harbour) and Ribersborg beach to the west, Limhamn further down the coast, and Hyllie in the south.
Visit Malmö, the part city-owned tourism body, shows where its member hotels cluster: around Stortorget, Lilla Torg and Gustav Adolfs torg, beside Malmö C and Malmö Live, between Triangeln and Möllevångstorget, several in Västra Hamnen, two large ones in Hyllie, small ones in Limhamn, and a campsite at Sibbarp. It is a members’ list, not a census, so treat it as a map of clusters.
The areas compared
| Area | Station or stop | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gamla staden | Walk from Malmö C; city buses | Old squares, shopping streets, many hotels | First visits |
| Malmö C and Malmö Live | Malmö C; airport coach | Station hotels, concert hall, building sites to the north and east | One night, early trains |
| Triangeln | City Tunnel station; shopping center | Between the center and Möllevången | Trains both ways |
| Möllevången | City buses; walk to Triangeln | Market Monday–Saturday, Folkets Park, evening venues | Neighborhood life |
| Västra Hamnen | City buses; bike share | Bo01, Turning Torso, sea baths, promenades | Sea air, modern apartments |
| Ribersborg and Limhamn | City buses | Beach, cold-bath house, small hotels, campsite at Sibbarp | Beach stays, camping |
| Hyllie | Hyllie station | Malmö Arena, Malmömässan, shopping center, large hotels | Events, fairs, flights |
Gamla staden
Stortorget was laid out in the late 1530s and Lilla Torg in the 1590s, and the two squares sit side by side in the old town. Visit Malmö’s hotel list is thickest here, around those squares and Gustav Adolfs torg. If you arrive by train you can walk to your room, and for a first visit of two or three days this is the default.
Malmö C and Malmö Live
Malmö Central Station is where SJ, Öresundståg, Pågatåg and Snälltåget trains stop, and where the Malmö Airport coach ends. Hotels sit right beside the station and next to the Malmö Live concert hall. The catch is on the far side: Nyhamnen, a new district by the sea directly next to the station, is under construction north and east of Malmö C, along the rail yard and Carlsgatan, and will be built in stages for decades.
Triangeln
Triangeln is a City Tunnel station with a shopping center next to it. From here Hyllie is three minutes south and Malmö C one stop north, so you have trains toward Copenhagen and Lund from under your hotel. Visit Malmö lists hotels between the shopping center and Möllevångstorget, which makes Triangeln the bridge between the center and Möllan.
Möllevången
A former working-class district that grew up beside Folkets Park, which opened in 1891 and is Sweden’s oldest folkpark (people’s park). Its Moriska Paviljongen hosts concerts, theatre and club nights on four stages. The square, Möllevångstorget, holds a market Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 15:00, closed on Sundays. Choose it for neighborhood life and evenings; choose a room off the square if you want to sleep in.
Västra Hamnen
The Western Harbour is former shipyard land, turned into a waterfront district after the 2001 Bo01 housing expo. Its landmark, Turning Torso, is a 190 m residential tower that takes no walk-in visits. In the north of the district, Scaniabadet is a deep-water sea bath with decks, open 09:00–21:00 from April to September and 09:00–18:00 from October to March, meant for confident swimmers. Visit Malmö lists several hotels here, including apartment hotels.
Ribersborg and Limhamn
Ribersborg is Malmö’s shallow sand beach, with piers, an accessible bathing area and, at its northern end, the 1898 cold-bath house (kallbadhus) on a pier. In 2026 the official bathing season ran 21 June to 20 August. Further down the coast, Limhamn has small hotels, and Visit Malmö lists a campsite at Sibbarp with views of the Öresund Bridge, within cycling distance of the center.
Hyllie
Hyllie station is 3 minutes by train from Triangeln, 12 minutes from Copenhagen Airport and 20 minutes from Copenhagen, and a hub for city and regional buses. The district holds Malmö Arena, the Malmömässan exhibition center, a large shopping center and two large hotels, one directly connected to the arena. It is the right base for an arena concert, a fair or an early flight from Copenhagen, and the wrong one for the old town. It is also still being built: the city plans for about 25,000 residents by 2040.
Noise and evenings
Under Swedish law, alcohol may be served until 01:00 unless the municipality decides otherwise, and the venue must be empty 30 minutes after serving ends. Later hours sit on each venue’s permit, not on the district. Malmö’s licensing guideline is being revised after a national rule change on 1 June 2026, and we found no published list of late hours.
- Want to be out in the evening: Möllevången, with Folkets Park and its stages, or the restaurant squares around Lilla Torg.
- Want quiet: Västra Hamnen or Limhamn, or a street without bars.
- Either way: check what is on the ground floor, and ask for a courtyard-side room (gårdssida). Above Möllevångstorget, the market starts at 07:00.
Construction and closures
Three dated things affect where you sleep this autumn:
| What | When | Who it affects |
|---|---|---|
| City Tunnel maintenance closure; no trains at Triangeln | Saturday 7 November 2026 | Triangeln and Hyllie bases |
| Sweden’s border-control decision ends unless renewed | 11 November 2026 | Anyone arriving by train from Denmark |
| New Öresundståg timetable | 13 December 2026 | Late-night and airport train times |
The tunnel closes for maintenance a couple of times a year, so check the planner for your dates. Nyhamnen’s building sites by Malmö C run for years, not weeks; the old-town side of the station is not affected.
Every train from Denmark is checked at Hyllie, on the platform or on board while it stands there, under a government decision running to 11 November 2026. A search on 15 October 2026 found no extension yet. Wherever you stay, keep your passport or national ID card in your hand luggage, and see carrying ID in Sweden.
Event weeks
Malmöfestivalen filled the city center 7–14 August 2026 with more than 900 free programme events; 2027 dates were not yet published when we checked. Concerts at Malmö Arena and fairs at Malmömässan fill Hyllie on their dates, and the autumn school break (24 October–1 November in 2026) brings family events across the city. Check the venue calendars before you book a Hyllie room.
Families and mobility
Children aged 0–6 ride Skånetrafiken free without a ticket. On the green city buses, tapping a Visa or Mastercard buys one full-price adult ticket for an hour, one per card, so give every adult their own card; our Skåne public transport guide covers tickets for older children. Malmö by bike has 1,000 bikes at 100 stations, open all year and around the clock. With a stroller or limited mobility, ask the hotel about lifts and step-free access before booking, especially in older buildings.
Lund, Copenhagen or the airport
- Lund is 10–12 minutes beyond Malmö C by Öresundståg — see our Lund guide.
- Copenhagen is about 40 minutes from Malmö C, and trains run roughly hourly through the night. Staying there means the Hyllie check on every trip into Sweden; our Malmö and Copenhagen weekend weighs the two.
- Malmö Airport (Sturup) has a hotel a five-minute walk from the terminal. The coach runs to Malmö C with six stops in the city, about 40 minutes, and since 16 August 2026 bus 147 links the airport with Svedala station. Our Malmö Airport guide has the rest.

FAQ
What is the best area to stay in Malmö for first-time visitors?
Gamla staden, the old town around Stortorget, Lilla Torg and Gustav Adolfs torg, or the edge of Malmö C. Both put the old squares, the shopping streets and the station within walking distance, and Visit Malmö’s member hotels cluster there. Trains from Copenhagen Airport and the Malmö Airport coach both reach Malmö C.
Is Hyllie a good place to stay in Malmö?
Yes, for Malmö Arena, a fair at Malmömässan or an early flight from Copenhagen. Hyllie station is 3 minutes by train from Triangeln and 12 from Copenhagen Airport. For sightseeing it is the wrong end of town: it is a modern district still being built, and the City Tunnel closes for maintenance on 7 November 2026.
Should I stay near Malmö C or Triangeln?
Malmö C if you arrive by train or airport coach and want the old town on foot. Triangeln if you want a City Tunnel station under the hotel, with Hyllie three minutes away and Möllevången next door. Both have Öresundståg trains to Copenhagen. Building work for the new Nyhamnen district continues north and east of Malmö C.
Which Malmö neighborhood is best for nightlife and food?
Möllevången, beside Folkets Park, where Moriska Paviljongen runs concerts and club nights, and the Möllevångstorget market trades Monday to Saturday from 07:00. Gamla staden has the restaurant squares around Lilla Torg. Bars normally stop serving at 01:00 unless a venue holds a later licence, so ask for a room away from the street.
Where should I stay in Malmö for the beach?
Västra Hamnen or Ribersborg. Ribersborg is a shallow sand beach in central Malmö, with piers, an accessible bathing area and the 1898 cold-bath house on a pier. Västra Hamnen has Scaniabadet, a deep-water sea bath with large decks, meant for confident swimmers. Visit Malmö also lists a campsite at Sibbarp, by the Öresund Bridge.
Do I need my passport to stay in Malmö if I fly into Copenhagen?
Yes, in practice. Sweden runs internal border control under a decision from 12 May to 11 November 2026, and police check train passengers from Denmark at Hyllie, on the platform or on board. Keep your passport or national ID card in your hand luggage. After 11 November, check whether the government has renewed the decision.
Should I stay in Malmö, Lund or Copenhagen?
Stay where your evenings are. Lund is 10–12 minutes beyond Malmö C and Copenhagen about 40 minutes by Öresundståg, and trains run roughly hourly through the night. Basing in Copenhagen means the Hyllie ID check on every trip into Sweden, while basing in Malmö means it on every return from Denmark.
