Växjö is a lake city in southern Småland with three museums under one ticket, a medieval cathedral and the nearest railway to Sweden’s glassworks. This page covers what is open in autumn 2026, how to pay for buses and trains, and how to reach Glasriket.
When you need this
You are planning a day or a weekend in Växjö, or using it as a base for the glassworks. You want to know which museums are open, whether the castle ruin and the lake steamer from older guidebooks still work, and how to pay for a bus without cash. Or you are arriving by train or plane and need the last few kilometers.
The city at a glance
Växjö is the county seat of Kronobergs län. Växjö kommun had 98,940 residents at the end of 2025, out of 203,121 in the county. The train station is central and within walking distance of the center.
| Sight | What it is | Status, October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Sveriges glasmuseum | Sweden’s glass museum, in the Smålands museum building | Upper floor open; lower floor closed |
| Smålands museum | The county museum, founded 1867, Sweden’s oldest | Open Tuesday–Sunday |
| Utvandrarnas hus | The House of the Emigrants, opened 1968 | Open Tuesday–Sunday |
| Växjö domkyrka | The cathedral, built in the early Middle Ages | Open daily 09:00–18:00 |
| Kronobergs slottsruin | Castle ruin on Helgasjön, about 5 km north | Closed to visitors |
Here is the short version. Växjö itself has no glassworks. Glasriket (the Kingdom of Crystal) lies in the forest villages to the east, and Växjö is where you sleep, change trains and see the glass museum.
What is closed right now
Three things that older guides and listings still recommend are not available in autumn 2026:
- Kronoberg Castle ruin. The ruin of Kronobergs slott on Helgasjön has been closed to visitors since the turn of 2022/2023 for safety reasons. Statens fastighetsverk, the state property agency that owns it, began repairs worth up to 25 million kronor in January 2026. Växjö kommun is to take over the site by summer 2027 at the latest, once the first phase of work makes a reopening possible. No reopening date has been published.
- The steamboat on Helgasjön. Kulturparken Småland says Ångaren Thor will not run trips on the lake in summer 2026.
- Half the glass museum. The lower floor of Sveriges glasmuseum is closed while a new exhibition is built. The upper floor shows temporary exhibitions.
You can still see the ruin’s story. It was a bishop’s castle in the Middle Ages, and the rebel Nils Dacke took it in 1542. Afterward it served as a Vasa fortress on the border with Denmark.
Getting there
By train. Öresundståg runs Kalmar–Växjö–Hässleholm–Malmö–Copenhagen. Krösatåg regional trains connect Växjö with Jönköping and Nässjö via Alvesta, and with Hässleholm, Värnamo and Kalmar. Växjö’s tourism site gives these rough times:
| From | About |
|---|---|
| Malmö | 2 hours |
| Copenhagen Airport | 2.5 hours |
| Gothenburg | 3 hours |
| Stockholm | 3.5 hours |
No tickets are sold on board the trains in Kronoberg. Buy in the app or at a ticket machine before you board. Our guides to Öresundståg and train travel in Sweden explain the operators.
Rail works in autumn 2026. On 24–25 October and 21–22 November, works at Alvesta change the trip south. Buses replace trains between Växjö and Älmhult, and Krösatåg covers Kalmar–Växjö. You need a valid ticket on the replacement bus.
By plane. Växjö Småland Airport is just over 10 minutes by car from the center, along road 30. Länstrafiken’s line 4 via Öjaby runs to Växjö Resecentrum at city-bus fares, bought in the Länstrafiken Kronoberg app. Its year-round routes go to Stockholm Bromma, not Arlanda, and to Alicante. See Sweden’s regional airports and the Bromma guide.
Buses, trains and paying
Buses and the Krösatåg trains in the county are run by Länstrafiken Kronoberg. City buses are light green and electric; regional buses are dark green.
| Where you buy | What you can pay with |
|---|---|
| Länstrafiken Kronoberg app | Swish, Visa or Mastercard, customer account; the operator says best price |
| Ticket machine (all rail stations; Oxtorget and Universitetsplatsen in Växjö) | Bank card or customer account |
| On board a city or regional bus | Single tickets; have your bank card ready |
| Resellers | Card, customer account or cash |
| On board Krösatåg in Kronoberg | Nothing; buy before boarding |
- Cash is listed only at resellers. Växjö’s own English visitor page from 2022 still says buses take cash. The operator’s current page does not.
- Riding without a valid ticket costs a 1,500-kronor penalty fare (tilläggsavgift) plus the ticket.
- Children aged 0–6 ride free with a paying passenger.
- Bus stops at the station have moved. The station area is being rebuilt, and in June 2026 some stops moved and some lines got new departure points. Check the stop in the app.
Bikes. City buses take only folded bikes, kick scooters, e-scooters and chainless children’s bikes, one per person, free. Regional buses also take an ordinary bike or e-bike when there is room, but replacement buses take none. On Krösatåg a bike rides free within Kronoberg when there is room. Our guide to bikes on trains and buses covers other counties. The municipality counts about 190 km of cycle paths.
Dogs. Two dogs or other pets travel free if they do not disturb others. Keep them on a lead and off the seats.
The museums
Kulturparken Småland runs all three exhibitions, and one ticket covers them: Smålands museum, Sveriges glasmuseum in the same building at Södra Järnvägsgatan 2, and Utvandrarnas hus at Vilhelm Mobergs gata 4. Under-18s go free. On Thursdays from 1 October to 17 December, visitors over 65 pay a reduced senior price.
Sveriges glasmuseum holds more than 45,000 objects, most of them kept in an open store at Kulturarvscentrum Småland rather than on show. With the lower floor closed, expect temporary exhibitions upstairs, not the full history of Swedish glass. If glass is why you came, spend the day in Glasriket and treat the museum as a bonus.
Smålands museum is Kronoberg’s county museum, founded on 3 February 1867, and Sweden’s oldest county museum.
Utvandrarnas hus, the House of the Emigrants, opened in August 1968. It is the Nordic region’s largest institute focused on emigration to North America, covering 1846–1930, when nearly 1.3 million Swedes left for the USA and Canada. Det nya landet (“The New Land”) tells the emigration story. Moberg och utvandrarna covers Vilhelm Moberg’s Emigrants novels. Family researchers can book the research room, Tuesday to Friday 10:00–16:00.
Växjö domkyrka, the cathedral at Linnégatan 2A, is open daily 09:00–18:00 and sometimes later for services. It has lifts, accessible toilets and a hearing loop, and the parish lists no entrance fee.
Into Glasriket
The working glassworks are east of Växjö, and our Glasriket guide has the full list of who blows glass and when. From Växjö:
| How | Route | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Car | To Kosta on road 28 | About 45 minutes |
| Train + bus | Krösatåg towards Kalmar to Lessebo, then bus 220 the 15 km to Kosta | Check Resrobot |
Kosta’s hot shop is open daily 10:00–16:00, with the glassblowers’ lunch 11:00–11:45. Bergdala and Skruf blow glass only on weekdays, so Tuesday to Friday shows you the most furnaces at work. Visiting several works in one day realistically needs a car.
Lakes, swimming and Åsnen
The municipality has more than 250 lakes. In 2020 it reported 41 bathing places to the national water agency, more than any other Swedish municipality. Six public artworks stand around Växjösjön, next to the center, chosen by residents’ vote between 2008 and 2017.
Evedal, on Helgasjön north of the city, is described as Växjö’s largest and most popular beach. It has a diving tower, a rollable bathing ramp for wheelchairs, winter bathing from the jetty and public transport nearby. Our guide to lake swimming in Sweden explains bathing places and water quality.
Åsnen National Park, south of Växjö, has been a national park since March 2018. It covers 1,873 hectares, three quarters of it water. The main entrance is at Sunnabron by the island of Sirkön, with paths to the Bjurkärr broad-leaved forest; a second entrance is near Trollberget. See Sweden’s national parks.

FAQ
Is Växjö a good base for Glasriket?
Yes, if you have a car or plan the connection. Kosta is about 45 minutes from Växjö by car. Without one, take the Krösatåg towards Kalmar to Lessebo, then bus 220 the 15 km to Kosta. Kosta’s hot shop is open daily, but Bergdala and Skruf blow glass only on weekdays, so a Tuesday-to-Friday trip sees the most furnaces at work.
What can I see at Sveriges glasmuseum right now?
Only part of it. The lower floor of Sweden’s glass museum is closed while a new exhibition is built, and the upper floor shows temporary exhibitions. The museum shares a building with Smålands museum at Södra Järnvägsgatan 2. One ticket, 150 kronor for adults and free under 18, also covers Utvandrarnas hus. The museums close on Mondays.
Can I visit Kronoberg Castle ruin?
Not at the moment. The ruin on Helgasjön, about 5 km north of Växjö, has been closed to visitors since the turn of 2022/2023 for safety reasons. Statens fastighetsverk began repairs in January 2026, and Växjö kommun is to take over the site by summer 2027 at the latest, once the first phase makes a reopening possible.
How do I pay for buses in Växjö?
Buy in the Länstrafiken Kronoberg app, which takes Swish, Visa or Mastercard, or buy a single ticket on board the city or regional bus. Ticket machines at Oxtorget, Universitetsplatsen and rail stations take cards, not cash. Cash is listed only at resellers. Krösatåg trains sell nothing on board, and riding without a ticket costs a 1,500-kronor penalty fare.
How do I get from Växjö Airport to the city?
Take Länstrafiken’s line 4 via Öjaby to Växjö Resecentrum, at the same fares as the city buses; buy the ticket in the Länstrafiken Kronoberg app. By car the airport is just over 10 minutes from the center along road 30. The airport’s year-round routes go to Stockholm Bromma, not Arlanda, and to Alicante.
Where can I swim in Växjö?
In the lakes. The municipality has more than 250 of them and reported 41 bathing places in 2020, the most of any Swedish municipality. Evedal on Helgasjön, north of the city, is described as the largest and most popular, with a diving tower, a rollable bathing ramp for wheelchairs and winter bathing from the jetty.
How do I get to Växjö by train?
Öresundståg runs direct from Copenhagen and Malmö via Hässleholm and continues to Kalmar; Krösatåg regional trains come from Jönköping, Nässjö, Värnamo and Hässleholm. Allow about 2 hours from Malmö and 3.5 hours from Stockholm. Buy before boarding. On 24–25 October and 21–22 November 2026, buses replace trains between Växjö and Älmhult.
