Taking Bikes on Trains and Buses in Sweden

In Sweden, whether your bike can come depends on the kind of train, not the country. Regional trains welcome bikes, and long-distance trains mostly don’t. E-bikes follow different rules again, so this guide goes operator by operator.

When you need this

You’re planning a car-free cycling trip that starts or ends with a train. You’re riding Kattegattleden and want to skip a stretch. Or you’re standing on a Stockholm platform at 16:30 with a bike, travelling with an e-bike, or heading over the bridge to Copenhagen.

How the rules are organised

Sweden has no single rule. EU Regulation 2021/782 gives rail passengers a right to take a bike on board. But the same article lets each railway limit that right for safety, for peak-hour capacity, or where its trains cannot take bikes. The railway must then publish its terms.

In practice the rules split by type of service:

• Regional trains carry an assembled bike free, space permitting. You can’t book the space.
• Long-distance trains take a bike only packed in a bag (SJ), in a baggage car on certain trains (Snälltåget), or not at all (VR).
• City buses, trams and the Stockholm metro don’t take full-size bikes.
• E-bikes are accepted on some regional trains and banned on others.

The EU rule also requires bike places on new trains: at least four per train where the railway has set no other number. It applies when trains are bought or heavily rebuilt, not to the trains running today. Restaurant, sleeping and couchette cars are exempt.

Long-distance trains: SJ, VR and Snälltåget

SJ, the main intercity operator, requires you to dismantle or fold the bike and pack it in a cykelväska (bike bag) before you board. The bag goes in the luggage compartment. Small folding bikes and e-scooters go folded in the luggage rack or under the seat in front of you, never overhead. You may not charge an e-scooter or a large lithium battery on board.

VR, which competes with SJ between Stockholm and Gothenburg, is stricter. Its luggage page says bikes are not allowed on board for safety reasons. E-bikes, e-scooters and similar vehicles are banned for fire risk. The page doesn’t mention a bike-bag exception, and it doesn’t take other special luggage either. Forums sometimes say VR works like SJ, but VR’s own terms don’t say so.

Snälltåget carries bikes only on its mountain trains 24 and 25 to Jämtland in summer and autumn. The bike rides in the resgodsvagn (baggage car). You pre-book it when you buy the ticket or later in “Min resa”, and the bike must be packed so it isn’t damaged. You can check it in and out at every stop. Snälltåget’s other trains take only folded bikes that fit hand-luggage size, 55 × 45 × 25 cm.

For an assembled bike on a long trip, the practical answer is a chain of regional trains. Many of them appear in SJ’s journey search under another operator’s name.

Regional trains: the bike-friendly part

None of these can be booked. Staff decide on the day, and if the bike area is full you wait for the next train. Summer weekends fill it first.

Each has its own small print:

• Mälartåg doesn’t take bike trailers, tandems or cargo bikes. You can’t board or leave with a bike at Arlanda C. Walk the bike on platforms and around the station buildings, not through them. A tricycle used as a mobility aid may come along.
• Norrtåg doesn’t take tandems or trailers either. If you need to be sure of travelling, Norrtåg itself recommends a folding bike, or a bike packed as special luggage (max 140 × 40 × 95 cm).
• Tandems are allowed on Öresundståg and Pågatåg.
• Mälartåg is changing operator. VR takes over from Transdev at the timetable change on 13 December 2026, so check the bike terms again after that date.

Stockholm: SL

SL’s rules are the most detailed in Sweden:

• Never allowed: full-size bikes on buses, the metro, Spårväg City and Nockebybanan.
• Commuter trains (pendeltåg): allowed, except Monday–Friday 06:00–09:00 and 15:00–18:00 on Jakobsberg–Västerhaninge, Uppsala–Tumba and Märsta–Tumba. Weekends have no time limits.
• Stations: never board or leave with a bike at Stockholm City or Arlanda C. You may ride through them. At 32 listed stations, including Odenplan, Solna, Sundbyberg and Uppsala C, you can’t board or leave with a bike in rush hour.
• Light rail: Tvärbanan, Lidingöbanan, Saltsjöbanan and the new X15p trains on Roslagsbanan take bikes outside weekday 06:00–09:00 and 15:00–18:00, space permitting.
• Commuter boats: bikes ride free when there is room. E-bikes go outside on deck.

SL also bans e-bikes on its trains and trams, along with bikes over 2 m, cargo bikes and tricycles. On Tvärbanan even a folded e-bike is banned. And never take a bike on an escalator: use the lift where bikes are allowed. Our Stockholm public transport guide covers the tickets.

Gothenburg and Skåne

Västtrafik keeps ordinary bikes and e-bikes off its buses and trams. The one exception is Skövde city lines 8 and 9, which take up to two bikes until 10 October 2027. On Västtåg and Öresundståg a bike or e-bike rides free in the car marked with a bike symbol. On most boats it goes on deck, free, except the Koster boats, where you pay a fee to the deckhand. Skåne and five other southern regions share one set of travel terms. They let each traveller bring one bike, e-bike or e-scooter free on Öresundståg, Pågatåg and Krösatåg, placed in the marked space. Skånetrafiken adds its own limits:

• At most six bikes per Pågatåg or Öresundståg train.
• No bikes on city buses or the Lund tram.
• Yellow regional buses carry bikes only on an outside rack. That’s any day between 15 June and 15 August, and otherwise weekends and holidays, 04:00–23:00. E-bikes don’t go on the racks.
• Crossing the Öresund Bridge, your bike needs its own bike ticket (cykelbiljett).

Take a bike on board against the southern terms and you risk a tilläggsavgift (surcharge), and you can be put off. Our Skåne public transport guide explains the Denmark tickets.

Buses, coaches and the Gotland ferry

City buses almost never take full-size bikes. SL, Västtrafik and Skånetrafiken all keep them off, though a folded bike can ride as luggage.

FlixBus carries bikes on some routes only, and you book the bike place with the ticket. The fee varies by route and booking time. Each bus takes at most five bikes of up to 20 kg. E-bikes, tandems and tricycles are not carried.

Replacement buses are a weak point. Västtrafik didn’t allow bikes on the replacement buses during the 2026 Gothenburg–Alingsås closure. Norrtåg can’t guarantee that your bike arrives with you when buses replace trains.

The Gotland ferry is easy. Book the bike as “cykel/moped” and board through the vehicle entrance; see the Gotland ferry and Gotland by bike.

E-bikes and folding bikes

An e-bike (elcykel) changes the answer more than anything else:

• Allowed: Västtåg, Öresundståg, Pågatåg, Krösatåg, Mälartåg and Västtrafik boats.
• Banned: SL’s trains and trams, VR, FlixBus and Skåne’s bus racks.
• Everywhere: no charging on board. The southern regions and Västtrafik carry only CE-marked e-vehicles.

A folding bike (hopfällbar cykel) fits almost everywhere as luggage. SL accepts one up to 120 cm folded, the southern regions and Västtrafik accept one when it is fully folded, and SJ takes it in the luggage rack. VR’s page doesn’t say either way.

Can I take my bike on SJ trains?

Only packed. SJ requires the bike to be dismantled or folded into a bike bag before boarding, at most 140 × 85 × 30 cm and 25 kg including the bag, placed in the luggage compartment. Small folding bikes go folded in the luggage rack or under the seat. For an assembled bike, plan the trip on regional trains instead.

Can I take a bike on the Stockholm metro?

No, not a full-size one. SL never allows ordinary bikes on the metro or buses. A folded bike up to 120 cm and small children’s bikes may come along. Commuter trains and four light-rail lines take bikes outside weekday rush hours, 06:00–09:00 and 15:00–18:00, and never at Stockholm City or Arlanda C.

Is it free to take a bike on the train in Sweden?

On regional trains, usually yes. Västtåg, Öresundståg, Pågatåg, Krösatåg, Mälartåg and Norrtåg carry a bike free, space permitting, and you cannot reserve a place. Charges appear elsewhere: a bike ticket to cross into Denmark, Snälltåget’s pre-booked baggage car on its mountain trains, and FlixBus coaches, where the bike fee varies.

Can I take an e-bike on Swedish trains?

It depends on the operator. Västtåg, Öresundståg, Pågatåg and Mälartåg accept e-bikes on the same terms as ordinary bikes, but you may not charge them on board. SL bans e-bikes on its commuter trains and light rail, VR bans e-bikes and e-scooters entirely, and FlixBus does not carry them.

Can I take a bike on the bus in Sweden?

Rarely on city buses: SL, Västtrafik and Skånetrafiken all keep full-size bikes off them, though folded bikes can travel as luggage. Skåne’s yellow regional buses carry bikes on an outside rack, every day in high summer and on weekends otherwise. FlixBus takes bikes on some routes if you book a place.

Do I need to book a bike space on Swedish trains?

On regional trains you cannot: places are first come, and staff may send you to the next train if the area is full. The bookable exceptions are Snälltåget’s baggage car on trains 24 and 25 and FlixBus bike slots. Under EU rules, trains that require a seat reservation must also let you reserve a bike.
