Swedes celebrate New Year with friends, a long dinner, a poem on TV at midnight and a sky full of rockets. The rockets are the part with rules attached, and the drinks are the part with a deadline. Here’s both, plus what’s open.
When you need this
You’re spending New Year in Sweden and want to set off fireworks, or you’ve seen rockets in a shop abroad and wonder whether they’re legal here. Or you’re planning the drinks for a party, need to get home after midnight, or want to know what’s open on 1 January.
How Swedes spend the night
Nyårsafton (New Year’s Eve) is not a public holiday, but it runs like one: shops close early and public transport runs a Saturday timetable. Nyårsdagen, 1 January, is a full public holiday. In 2026 the eve falls on a Thursday and New Year’s Day on Friday 1 January 2027.
Christmas is for family; New Year is for friends. Nordiska museet, the national museum of cultural history, describes an evening when people dress up, eat something luxurious such as lobster with champagne and celebrate with friends rather than relatives. At midnight they watch the New Year’s speeches on television, set off fireworks and make resolutions (nyårslöften).
Fireworks: what is legal
Sweden has no ban on private fireworks, but it has more rules than most visitors expect.

The stick-rocket and firecracker rules catch travelers. Both are sold freely in some EU countries, but using them here without a permit is still an offense — and the national agency, Myndigheten för civilt försvar (the former MSB), warns that customs may seize permit-requiring fireworks ordered online.
A legal consumer firework carries a CE mark, a registration number, instructions and an age limit. The phrase to look for on the label is Får användas av allmänheten — “may be used by the public.” It is also illegal to give outdoor fireworks to anyone under 18, and under-18s, mostly boys, top the injury statistics. Selling fireworks requires a permit from the municipal rescue service.
Where and when you may fire them
The Public Order Act (ordningslagen) sets the general rule in chapter 3, section 7: you need a police permit whenever the time, place and circumstances mean your fireworks risk injury or considerable nuisance to people or property. Municipalities may add their own rules, and many do, in their lokala ordningsföreskrifter (local public-order bylaws).
The usual result is a permit-free New Year window. Lund, for example, allows fireworks from 18:00 on New Year’s Eve to 02:00 on New Year’s Day, but never on or within 50 meters of hospital and care-home buildings; any other time needs a police permit. Other towns publish other hours. The agency’s own reading is that a permit is usually not needed at New Year, but may be even then — in built-up areas, for instance.
Breaking section 7 or a local pyrotechnics rule is punishable by a fine, whether deliberate or careless. And in the rare event of a stringent fire ban (skärpt eldningsförbud), pyrotechnics are prohibited outright — the rules are explained in our guide to fire bans in Sweden.
No ban in 2026
Pressure to ban private fireworks is real, but it has not become law. In March 2026 the Riksdag rejected five motions to ban or restrict them, so the rules for 31 December 2026 are the same as last year’s. The agency adds that neither it nor the government can ban fireworks approved for the EU market; what it can do is require permits and training, which is how stick rockets and firecrackers ended up restricted.
Midnight at Skansen
The national midnight moment is a poem. Every year since 1895, a well-known Swede has read Tennyson’s Ring Out, Wild Bells — in Swedish, Nyårsklockan — at Skansen, the open-air museum in Stockholm, at the stroke of twelve. It is part of a countdown show on the Solliden stage broadcast live on SVT, and Swedish Television has carried the reading since 1977.
Skansen’s 2026 hours on 31 December are 10:00–16:00 and again 20:00–24:00. Visitors may not bring fireworks or lanterns into the grounds. Can’t get there? The SVT broadcast carries it nationwide.
Drinks, transport and what is open
Alcohol. Systembolaget, the state alcohol retailer, closes at 15:00 at every store on New Year’s Eve and is closed on New Year’s Day and again on Epiphany, 6 January. On 30 December 2026 stores stay open to at least 19:00 — the easier day to shop. Full details in Systembolaget’s holiday hours.
Transport. Regional transport authorities run a Saturday service on New Year’s Eve and a Sunday service on New Year’s Day; each region publishes its own holiday timetable. In central Stockholm, expect road closures around midnight: on New Year’s Eve 2025 streets were closed to traffic and several bus lines around Slussen rerouted from about 22:30 to 01:00.

New Year’s Day: pizza and closed doors
Nordiska museet counts pizza on New Year’s Day as one of Sweden’s newest traditions, often eaten in front of the ski jumping or the film Ivanhoe. FAQ
Can you set off fireworks in Sweden on New Year’s Eve?
Yes, if you are 18 or over and use consumer fireworks that need no permit, such as cakes, fountains and rockets without a stick. Many municipalities allow use without a police permit only in a set window, for example 18:00 to 02:00 in Lund, and never close to hospitals or care homes. Check the local ordinance for the town you are in.
Are rockets with sticks legal in Sweden?
