August is summer’s second half. The weather stays summery and the evenings slowly shorten, and halfway through the month Sweden goes back to work and school. Here is how the month splits, what’s on, and what the water is really like.
When you need this
You’re choosing between July, August and September, or you’ve booked August and want to know whether Sweden will still be on holiday. Maybe you’ve been invited to a kräftskiva (crayfish party), you want to try fermented herring, or you’re planning beach days and wonder how warm the sea will be. If you’re bringing a dog or heading into the forest, a few rules change during the month too.
Two Augusts: holiday, then back to normal
August is the month Sweden comes back from holiday, and it does so in two halves.
The first half is still holiday Sweden. Statistics Sweden (SCB) counted about 1.39 million people away on holiday for an entire week in August 2026. That is two-thirds of July’s 2.09 million, and well above June’s 331,000. August holidays were also higher in 2026 than in 2024 or 2025, when about 1.24 million were away. That fits a trend noted by Isof, the state institute for language and folklore: Swedish leave has shifted slightly into August in recent years.
The reason is the leave act. By default, every employee gets one block of at least four weeks off in June–August. July is still the peak month, though: both Swedish and foreign guest nights peaked in July in 2025. For the July picture, see Sweden in July.
The second half is normal Sweden. The return has a date:
| What changes | When (2026 example) | Who decides |
|---|---|---|
| Municipal schools restart | 17 August in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö; 18 August in Uppsala | Each school provider, within “the school year starts in August” |
| Summer bus timetables end | Uppsala and Kronoberg regions: last day 16 August, normal timetable from 17 August | Each regional transport authority |
| Stockholm’s school start in 2027 | 17 August | City of Stockholm |
The School Ordinance only requires the school year to begin in August. The huvudman (school provider) picks the day, and independent schools may choose other dates. For the whole school calendar, see Swedish school holidays.
What this means for you: the second half of August usually gives quieter sights and full services. The first half gives you the busy, festival-heavy late summer. August has no public holidays, so shops keep their ordinary weekly hours all month.
The food month: crayfish and surströmming
August’s two famous food dates are both custom, not law. Plenty of English-language guides still describe them as official seasons.
Crayfish. From the late 1800s until 1994, crayfishing was banned from November to early August. The opening was 17:00 on 7 August, moved in 1982 to the first Wednesday in August. The ban is gone, but the timing stuck: Swedes still hold their kräftskivor in August and into September. How to host or join one is in the Swedish crayfish party.
Catching your own is a different matter:
- You need the permission of whoever holds the fishing right. Sweden’s free fishing right covers rod fishing, not crayfish traps.
- Lake Vättern is the one public exception, on three weekends from the fourth Friday in August: from 27 August in 2027. But non-resident visitors may fish public water only with hand tackle, and a trap isn’t hand tackle. The weekends are therefore likely closed to you unless you live in Sweden.
- Unauthorized crayfishing can mean fines or up to a year in prison, and you lose your catch and gear.
- Never tip shells, leftover crayfish or brine into a lake other than the one they came from. It can spread crayfish plague, and it’s against the fisheries ordinance.
If the cottage you rented has traps in the shed, ask the host who holds the fishing right before using them. The full rules are in crayfishing in Sweden.
Surströmming. The year’s surströmming, fermented Baltic herring, goes on sale on the third Thursday in August. That’s 19 August in 2027. The date was set in 1940 and was required by law until 1988. Today producers keep it as a tradition. Open the can outdoors and eat it on thin flatbread with potatoes and onion. More in our surströmming guide.
Swimming in August: warm, usually — with three catches
August stays summery on land. SMHI, the national weather agency, gives August a normal mean of 17.7 °C in Stockholm and 17.9 °C in Lund, against 11.1 °C at Kiruna airport. On some southern coasts August is actually warmer than July. Utklippan, off Blekinge, averages 17.6 °C in August against 17.1 °C in July.
The sea is less predictable than the postcards suggest. In August 2015, for example, SMHI reported surface water approaching 20 °C in the Baltic and on the west coast. Three catches apply, though:
- No summer month is reliably the warmest. SMHI’s oceanographers found July and August swapped places between 2020 and 2021 at their measuring buoys.
- Upwelling (uppvällning) can chill a coast overnight. When wind drives the warm surface water away from the shore, colder deep water rises. Temperatures can drop by ten degrees or more.
- Algal blooms peak in late summer. Baltic cyanobacteria thrive in warm, calm weather. In 2026, dense surface scum lay off Skåne and in the Öresund from late July to late August, and Malmö briefly warned against bathing.
You can’t tell a toxic bloom by eye, so stay out of water with a green or yellow-green film, streaks or grains. Keep children and dogs out too. SMHI publishes a satellite map of the bloom situation; check it before a Baltic swim, and see algal blooms in the Baltic.
One more August detail: official bathing-water testing winds down. Municipalities sample their bathing waters only during the bathing season, and Stockholm samples from week 22 to week 33. Later in August you may find no fresh result posted, so check the municipality’s beach page and judge the water yourself. Where you may swim and how to read a badplats (designated bathing place) is in swimming in Swedish lakes.
What’s on in August 2027
August is Sweden’s festival month, and the three city festivals in Malmö, Stockholm and Gothenburg cost nothing to enter:
| Event | Where | 2027 dates | Entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stockholm Pride | Stockholm | 2–8 August (week 31) | See the Pride guide |
| Medieval Week | Visby, Gotland | 8–15 August | See the Medieval Week guide |
| Way Out West | Gothenburg | 12–14 August | See the festivals guide |
| Malmöfestivalen | Malmö | 13–20 August | Free |
| Kulturfestivalen | Stockholm | Not yet published (12–16 August in 2026) | Free |
| Göteborgskalaset | Gothenburg | Not yet published (27–30 August in 2026) | Free |
| Surströmming premiere | Nationwide | Thursday 19 August | — |
| Vättern public crayfish weekends | Lake Vättern | From Friday 27 August | Free; residency caveat |
Pride’s 2027 dates were published after the 2026 event, and the whole week falls in August. Malmöfestivalen opens with a public crayfish party, and on that opening Friday you may bring your own drinks to the area in front of the main stage. The rest of the week, bringing alcohol in is banned. Book beds early for Visby’s Medieval Week and for Gothenburg during Way Out West. Outdoor rules that change in August
Several rules switch on or off during the month, and most visitors never hear about them:
- Until 20 August, dogs may not run loose in nature where there is game (the leash law).
- From 1 August, fox and badger hunting opens.
- From 16 August, roe-buck and red-deer-calf stalking opens.
- From 21 August, hunting dogs may pursue moose and bear. In 2026 the bear licence hunt began that day in seven counties.
- From 25 August, grouse seasons open where they apply.
So the leash period ends just as hunting with dogs begins. A loose dog in the forest can still chase game or be mistaken for it. Wear visible colors and keep dogs close on forest walks; see hiking during hunting season.
The good news is that mosquitoes drop clearly in August, especially in the mountains. Lingonberries ripen in August–September, with blueberries still around. See berry picking in Sweden. Evenings shorten visibly through the month: in autumn, SMHI notes, day length changes by more than ten minutes a day in the far north and up to about five in the south. In Kiruna, meteorological autumn arrives around 24 August on average.
Is August cheaper than July?
Not reliably. SCB’s consumer price index shows no consistent August discount on leisure accommodation. The index for cabins, campsites and hostels was the same in July and August in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and only in 2026 did it fall, by 12.2%. Hotel prices were slightly higher in August than in July in three of the last four years. The index tracks price changes, not what any one place charges, so compare offers for your exact dates.

FAQ
Is August a good time to visit Sweden?
Yes, for most trips. August keeps summer temperatures, about 17.7 °C on average in Stockholm, with fewer mosquitoes than July and the crayfish and festival season in full swing. The first half is still busy, with 1.39 million Swedes on a whole-week holiday in August 2026. From about 17 August schools and normal timetables return.
When do Swedish schools start in August?
Around mid-August. The School Ordinance only says the school year starts in August; each municipality or independent school sets the day. In 2026 municipal schools began on 17 August in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö and on 18 August in Uppsala. Stockholm’s 2027 term starts on 17 August. Independent schools may use other dates.
When is crayfish season in Sweden?
Crayfish parties happen in August and into September, but there is no legal season. The old ban on crayfishing until early August was abolished in 1994. On private water the owner decides when you may fish, with permission. Lake Vättern’s public crayfish weekends start on the fourth Friday in August, 27 August in 2027.
When is the surströmming premiere?
The third Thursday in August, which is 19 August in 2027. That is when the year’s fermented herring goes on sale. The date was set in 1940 and was statutory until 1988; today producers keep it by tradition. Open the can outdoors and eat it on thin flatbread with potatoes and onion.
Is the water warm enough to swim in Sweden in August?
Usually, in the south. In August 2015, for example, SMHI reported Baltic and west-coast surface water approaching 20 °C. But no single summer month is reliably the warmest, and winds that push surface water offshore can bring up cold water, dropping temperatures by ten degrees or more. Avoid water with a visible algal bloom.
What events are on in Sweden in August 2027?
Stockholm Pride runs 2–8 August, Medieval Week in Visby 8–15 August, Way Out West in Gothenburg 12–14 August and Malmöfestivalen 13–20 August. Stockholm’s Kulturfestivalen and Gothenburg’s Göteborgskalaset return each August; their 2027 dates were not yet published in October 2026. The surströmming premiere is 19 August.
