July is Sweden at full summer: long light evenings, busy coasts and the most restaurant visits of the year. It is also the month the country goes on leave together. Here is what that means, service by service.

When you need this

You’re choosing between June, July and August, or you’ve already booked July and want to know what will work. Maybe you’re planning a rail itinerary, need a prescription refilled, or found a semesterstängt (closed for the holiday) sign on the café you were heading for. Or you just want to know whether “Sweden closes in July” is true. It isn’t, but some things do change.

No closing day, just a holiday month

July is the only month of the Swedish year without a single public holiday. The statutory list runs from New Year’s Day to Boxing Day, and its summer entries are National Day on 6 June and Midsummer Day, which is always a Saturday between 20 and 26 June. Midsummer Eve, the day before, is when the country really does shut; in 2027 it falls on Friday 25 June, just before July begins.

What July has instead is industrisemester, the period when the largest number of Swedes take their leave at the same time. By default every employee is entitled to one block of at least four weeks off in June–August, and in July 2026 Statistics Sweden counted about 2.1 million people away on holiday for an entire week. The law and the numbers behind this are in our guide to industrisemester and why Sweden slows down in July.

For a visitor, the effect splits neatly in two:

Runs as normal or longerRuns leaner
Shops and supermarketsCity buses, trams and local trains (summer timetables)
Museums and attractions (many on summer hours)Some rail lines (engineering works, replacement buses)
Restaurants in coastal and holiday areasRoutine health care and some health centers
Regional buses to beaches, lakes and national parksOffice-district lunch restaurants
1177, 112 and emergency careOffices, tradespeople and anyone on a four-week break

What runs as normal or longer

Shops keep their ordinary hours. There is no holiday to close them, and Sweden has no law that shuts shops in summer; see opening hours in Sweden for the normal pattern. The same goes for the state alcohol retailer: with no July holiday, its ordinary weekly schedule applies (details in Systembolaget opening hours).

Museums and attractions often stretch their day. The Vasa Museum in Stockholm, for example, runs summer hours from June to August, opening earlier and closing later than the rest of the year. That pattern is common at venues that live on visitors, but there is no national rule, so check each one.

Regional transport toward leisure spots can actually improve. In 2026, Uppsala’s regional operator added buses to a bathing beach and outdoor spots, and Kronoberg’s added departures and a line to Åsnen National Park.

Local buses and trams: the summer timetable

From about mid-June to mid-August, most regions switch to a sommartidtabell (summer timetable). In the city, that usually means fewer departures. In 2026 Västtrafik, which runs public transport in Gothenburg and West Sweden, said departures would be thinned on almost all its bus and train lines. Uppsala’s city buses all ran less often.

Two things follow:

  • Look up the timetable for your actual dates. A schedule you found in May may not apply in July.
  • Allow for longer waits in the evening and on weekends, especially outside the big-city cores.

The summer timetable is a frequency change, not a shutdown. Lines keep running; you just wait longer.

Trains and summer engineering works

This is the July change most likely to catch you out. Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, deliberately schedules its longest track closures for the summer holiday, because fewer trains run and fewer people travel then. In its words, working in summer disturbs fewer travelers and freight. On some short sections, a ersättningsbuss (replacement bus) takes over.

In 2026, for example, commuter trains between Rönninge and Södertälje C, south of Stockholm, were replaced by buses for most of July. Trafikverket said that year’s heaviest works were concentrated in western Sweden.

The works are planned years ahead and built into timetables and tickets before they go on sale, so you won’t usually be stranded. But the train you booked may include a bus leg and take longer. Trafikverket’s advice is to always check with the train operator whether your journey is affected. Do that close to departure, not only at booking. For operators, tickets and planners, see train travel in Sweden.

Health care in July

Swedish health care runs a summer plan. Regions prioritize acute and high-priority care and cut back on planned care, and some local health centers (vårdcentral) close for weeks and send patients to a neighbor. In Kronoberg in 2026, one center closed from week 25 to week 34. Summer staffing is a recurring problem: in June 2026 the government gave the regions SEK 250 million specifically to staff the holiday months.

What this means in practice:

  1. Call 1177 first. The nurse line is open around the clock and routes you to a clinic that is open. From a foreign phone, dial +46 771 11 77 00.
  2. Call 112 for anything life-threatening. Emergency care does not close.
  3. Bring enough prescription medication for the whole trip. One region advised its own residents to renew prescriptions in spring.

Fees, cards and where tourists can go are covered in healthcare for tourists.

Restaurants and cafés: the busiest month, with gaps

“Restaurants close in July” is the most repeated half-truth about Swedish summer. Statistics Sweden found that July is the month Swedish households make the most restaurant visits of the whole year. The summer surge is strongest in Västra Götaland and Skåne, the west and south coasts. In Stockholm, restaurant sales are spread more evenly over the year.

The gaps are in office districts. Lunch places that live on weekday office workers may close for a few weeks when those workers leave, and you’ll see semesterstängt or sommarstängt on the door. Waterfront, tourist-area and holiday-town venues are the ones running flat out. So check opening dates before walking across town for a specific lunch spot, and expect coastal places to be full. Fire bans and the outdoors

July is barbecue and campfire season, and also fire-ban season in dry spells. Bans are local. The municipality usually makes the formal decision, and the county administrative board (länsstyrelsen) can impose one across the whole county when the risk is very high.

A normal eldningsförbud (fire ban) forbids solid-fuel fires outside built-up areas, barbecues included. A stricter one also covers gas and liquid fuels. Breaking a ban, even by negligence, can cost you a fine. Check Krisinformation’s ban map or the county board’s site before lighting anything, and see fire bans in Sweden for how to read them.

Weather

July is the warm month. SMHI, the national weather agency, gives Stockholm a normal July mean of 18.7 °C, the highest of its stations, against 14.4 °C at Randijaur in Lapland (1991–2020 normals). On some coasts, August is warmer than July. Light, heat waves, ticks and swimming are covered in Sweden in summer, and the month-by-month picture in Sweden’s weather by month.

What’s on in July

July is framed by two big gatherings, with Stockholm Pride at its far end:

FAQ

Is everything closed in Sweden in July?

No. July has no public holidays and no law closes anything. Shops, museums and attractions run normally, and many leisure venues open longer. What changes is staffing: city buses and trains run thinner summer timetables, some rail lines close for engineering works, some health centers close for weeks, and some office-district lunch restaurants shut while their customers are on holiday.

Are there public holidays in Sweden in July?

None. Sweden’s statutory holidays include National Day on 6 June and Midsummer Day, always a Saturday between 20 and 26 June, but nothing in July or August. The next holiday after Midsummer is All Saints’ Day in late October or early November. July closures come from people taking leave, not from the calendar.

Do trains run normally in Sweden in July?

Mostly, but summer is when Trafikverket schedules its longest track closures, because fewer people travel during the holiday period. Some short sections are served by replacement buses. The works are built into timetables and tickets, yet Trafikverket advises always checking with the train operator whether your journey is affected before you travel.

Is public transport reduced in Swedish cities in summer?

Often, yes. In 2026 several regions ran summer timetables from about 15 June to 16 August. Västtrafik thinned departures on almost all bus and train lines and Uppsala’s city buses ran less often, while some regional lines added trips to beaches, festivals and national parks. Check the summer timetable for your exact dates.

Can I see a doctor in Sweden in July?

Yes, but expect reduced routine capacity. Regions prioritize acute care in summer, and some health centers close for weeks and refer patients to a neighboring center. Call 1177, open around the clock, to be routed to an open clinic; from a foreign phone dial +46 771 11 77 00. In a life-threatening situation, always call 112.

What events are on in Sweden in July?

July opens with Almedalsveckan, the political week in Visby (28 June–2 July 2027), and ends with Storsjöyran in Östersund (30–31 July 2027). Stockholm Pride straddles late July and early August; in 2026 it ran 27 July–1 August, and the 2027 dates were not yet published. Midsummer falls just before July.
