Stockholm Central is really four stations joined by escalators, tunnels and lifts. Here’s how they fit together, where to find your train, coach, metro or taxi, and what the station offers, with the night closure and the current platform works.
When you need this
You’ve just stepped off Arlanda Express with two suitcases and need the metro. Or your train to Gothenburg leaves in twelve minutes and you don’t know which hall the tracks are in. Maybe you have a 05:00 departure and wonder whether you can wait inside. Or you’re looking for a toilet, free wifi, the coach gate or someone to help with a wheelchair.
Four stations in one
Stockholms centralstation, shown as Stockholm C on tickets and boards, is Sweden’s rail hub. Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, says almost 80 percent of the country’s long-distance trains start or end here. Jernhusen, the state-owned company that owns the station, counts more than 200,000 visitors a day across the station and the coach terminal next door.
| Name on signs | What it is | What leaves from it |
|---|---|---|
| Stockholm C | The mainline station | Long-distance, regional and Arlanda Express trains |
| Stockholm City | Underground platforms below the complex | SL commuter trains (pendeltåg) |
| T-Centralen | The central metro station | All three metro lines (green, red, blue) |
| Cityterminalen | The coach station across Klarabergsviadukten | Long-distance, airport and ferry coaches |
The mainline station has three halls. The central hall (Centralhallen) is the main entrance on Vasagatan. The lower hall (Nedre hallen) is the way down to the metro and commuter trains. The upper hall (Övre hallen) is the third. Jernhusen publishes a PDF map for each hall and for Cityterminalen. Download them before you arrive.
Finding your train
Look up your track (spår) on the departure boards or in your operator’s app before you start walking. Trafikverket runs the boards and the announcements. It also runs a traffic information line that answers around the clock.
- Tracks 11–19 are reached through a passage under the station.
- Arlanda Express uses its own tracks 1 and 2, with a departure lounge and a taxi terminal beside them.
- One platform serves two tracks, so platform 6 means tracks 13 and 14.
Check the track every time, because the station is being rebuilt. Trafikverket warns that during the works your train may leave from a different track than usual. As of October 2026:
- The northern part of platform 4 (tracks 7–8) is closed until week 5 of 2027.
- Platform 6 (tracks 13–14) is fully closed from Friday 30 October at 22:30 to Monday 2 November 2026 at 04:30, while its extension opens.
- In summer 2026, platform 4 was resurfaced during a summer track closure. Take extra care in the summer works season.
A much bigger rebuild has been studied, but no money is set aside for it in the national plan for 2026–2037. Trafikverket itself says the platforms are narrow and the station is not fully adapted for travellers with disabilities. For tickets, see how to buy train tickets in Sweden.
Changing to the metro, commuter train or coach
Metro and commuter trains. Go down to the lower hall and follow the signs to T-Centralen for the metro or Stockholm City for commuter trains. The commonest mix-up is the commuter train from Arlanda: it doesn’t stop at Stockholm C at all, but at Stockholm City below it. Follow the signs up from there. Allow extra time for any change between levels. SL’s customer centre, SL Center, is in the central hall on the Vasagatan side. Tickets are covered in our SL public transport guide.
Coaches. Long-distance coaches don’t leave from the station’s halls. They leave from Cityterminalen, opposite the station on Klarabergsviadukten. It has 19 gates on two levels, and the gate number is on the screens. Escalators and lifts connect it to the station, Stockholm City and T-Centralen. Coaches to Arlanda, Skavsta and Västerås airports and to the Baltic and Gotland ferry terminals also leave from here. See long-distance coaches in Sweden.
One official page is out of date. Jernhusen’s Cityterminalen page still lists a coach to Bromma airport, but the operator has paused that route. Our Bromma airport guide has the way there now.
Driving someone to a coach? Cars may not drive on Cityterminalen’s bus street. The drop-off, taxi and färdtjänst (disability transport) stops are outside its main entrance at Klarabergsviadukten 72.
Arriving or leaving at night
Stockholm Central is not a 24-hour station. It closes for two to three hours every night (exact hours in the table below). Cityterminalen closes even earlier, at 00:15. So you can’t sleep inside before an early train, and lockers can’t be opened while the station is shut.
What still works:
- Arlanda Express keeps two street entrances open whenever its trains run, at Vasaplan/Östra Järnvägsgatan 15 and Kungsbron 1. Walk round to them along Vasagatan.
- The metro runs all night at weekends, so T-Centralen stays useful after the mainline station has closed.
For the airport options at odd hours, see Arlanda to Stockholm.
Luggage, toilets and help
Porter. There are no luggage trolleys. A free porter service replaces them, every day from 08:00 to 18:00. Call no earlier than 30 minutes before your train leaves or arrives; it can’t be booked further ahead. The number is on Jernhusen’s porter page.
Left luggage. Code lockers stand in the lower and upper halls and on Cityterminalen levels 1 and 2. Level 2 has boxes for skis and golf bags. A staffed desk in the lower hall takes bulky bags by day. Lockers rent for at most 7 days. Prices and sizes are in luggage storage in Sweden.
Toilets. The staffed toilet is in the lower hall. It has an accessible toilet, a changing table, a shower and a nursing room. You pay by card, and a shower and towel cost extra. Cityterminalen’s toilets are on level 2, open 07:00–21:00. More in public toilets in Sweden.
Assistance. Station assistance (ledsagning) is booked with the train company you travel with, not with the station. Book at the latest 24 hours before the journey. Trafikverket’s stationsledsagning.se explains how it works but can’t take bookings. All entrances are accessible. Paid disability parking is at Klarabergsviadukten. SL’s own escort service, with bag-carrying help around Centralen, is covered in wheelchair-accessible Stockholm.
Other services:
- Free wifi: the network is called “All Station Guests”.
- Cash machines are on level 1 of Cityterminalen by the main entrance.
- The SJ lounge is one floor up at the short end of the central hall; SJ sets who may use it.
Lost something? Items lost in the station go to the police, whose station is at Klarabergsviadukten 49. Its opening hours are limited, but you can report a loss online at any time. Items left on a train or coach go to that company’s lost-property service. See lost property in Sweden. Crowded halls are also where pickpockets work, so keep a hand on your bags. Our guide to pickpockets and scams has the details.
Getting a taxi
Use the official rank outside the main entrance on Vasagatan. Taxi firms there commit to a price no more than 10 percent above the area’s normal fare, with cars no older than six years. Taxi hosts in yellow jackets help on weekdays from 07:00 to 22:00. Arlanda Express has its own taxi terminal by its platforms, with contracted firms. A driver who approaches you away from a rank comes with no price guarantee. Fares and how to read them are in taxis in Sweden.

FAQ
Is Stockholm Central Station open 24 hours?
No. Jernhusen, the station owner, lists the halls as open from 03:00 to 01:00 on weekdays, 04:00 to 01:30 on Saturdays and 04:00 to 02:00 on Sundays, so the station closes for two to three hours every night. Arlanda Express keeps its own street entrances open while its trains run, and Cityterminalen closes at 00:15.
What is the difference between Stockholm C, Stockholm City and T-Centralen?
They are three stations in one complex. Stockholm C is the mainline station for long-distance, regional and Arlanda Express trains. Stockholm City is the underground station for SL’s commuter trains. T-Centralen is the metro station where all three metro lines meet. Escalators and lifts link them, but changing between them takes several minutes.
Where does the Arlanda Express leave from at Stockholm Central?
From its own tracks 1 and 2, which have a departure lounge and a taxi terminal beside them. Two street entrances lead straight there, at Vasaplan/Östra Järnvägsgatan 15 and at Kungsbron 1, and they stay open during the train’s operating hours even when the main station is closed at night.
Are there toilets at Stockholm Central and do they cost money?
Yes. The staffed toilet is in the lower hall and costs 10 kr, paid by card; a shower costs extra. It has an accessible toilet, a changing table and a nursing room. Cityterminalen has toilets on level 2, open 07:00 to 21:00, also 10 kr by card. Jernhusen lists the station toilet from 05:00.
Is there help with luggage at Stockholm Central?
Yes, free. A porter service carries bags every day from 08:00 to 18:00 and replaces luggage trolleys, which the station does not have. You book it by phone no earlier than 30 minutes before your train leaves or arrives. For left luggage, use the lockers in the lower and upper halls or the staffed desk.
Where do long-distance and airport coaches leave from?
From Cityterminalen, the coach station opposite Stockholm Central on Klarabergsviadukten. It has 19 gates on two levels, with the gate shown on screens. Airport coaches to Arlanda, Skavsta and Västerås and coaches to the ferry terminals leave from here. Escalators and lifts connect it to the station, the commuter trains and the metro.
I lost something at Stockholm Central. Where do I go?
It depends where. Items lost in the station are handed to the police, whose station is at Klarabergsviadukten 49 with limited opening hours; you can report a loss online at any time. Items left on a train or bus go to that operator’s lost-property service, so contact the train or coach company.
