Swedish train tickets reward the organized. Book early, buy each leg from the right seller, and don’t board a regional train expecting to pay on board. Here is who sells what, when tickets go on sale, and what happens if an inspector finds you without one.
When you need this
You’re booking Stockholm–Gothenburg or a night train north and want the lowest fare. Your dates “aren’t bookable yet”. You need a regional train after a long-distance one. Or you’re on a platform without a ticket, wondering whether you can pay on board.
Who sells which ticket
Sweden has no single railway ticket office. You buy from whoever sells that train, and for regional trains that is not the company driving it.

Plan the whole trip first in Resrobot, the national journey planner, to see which operator runs each leg. Then buy each leg from its seller. The operator map changes most Decembers; train travel in Sweden has the current picture. Mälartåg changes operator in December 2026, but you still buy its tickets from Mälardalstrafik.
When tickets go on sale
Long-distance fares are dynamic. The price depends on demand, the cheapest seats go first, and the same seat costs more as the train fills. Waiting for a last-minute deal usually means paying more.
Tickets also aren’t on sale indefinitely. Operators release them in blocks for each timetable period:
- SJ released summer 2026 (15 June – 6 September) on 28 January 2026, about four and a half months ahead. SJ called it a record-early release.
- On 24 September 2026, VR sold Stockholm–Gothenburg trips only up to 11 December, the last day before the new timetable.
So if your date can’t be booked yet, it probably hasn’t been released, not sold out. Check again after the operator’s next release; SJ announces them, and the lowest fares are there on day one. Peak weekends and holidays fill first, so their prices climb soonest.
Flexible or cheap: no cooling-off
SJ sells tickets in several price groups and flexibility levels, from cheap tickets that can’t be changed to rebookable (ombokningsbar) and refundable (återbetalningsbar) ones.
Choose carefully. Swedish law gives no 14-day right to cancel a train ticket bought online. The Distance Contracts Act excludes passenger transport from the right of withdrawal, so the ticket type is all the protection you have. If your plans might change, the extra cost of a flexible ticket is the only insurance. On the cheapest fare, a missed train usually means buying a new ticket.
One exception is worth knowing: Arlanda Express tickets aren’t tied to a departure. Singles and returns are valid for any departure in either direction for 90 days. See Arlanda to Stockholm.

Discount levels change, so compare the final price at booking rather than trusting a percentage from an old guide. Carry ID or a student card, because inspectors may ask you to prove your category.
Connections: buy one Resplus ticket
If your trip needs two companies, say an SJ train and then a regional train or bus, buy it as one Resplus ticket. Resplus is Samtrafiken’s national through-ticket scheme. It comes with an arrival guarantee (kom-fram-garanti): if a delay breaks your connection, you are rebooked or given other transport at no extra cost.
Two separate tickets are two separate contracts. If the first train runs late and you miss the second, the second company owes you nothing. On a Resplus through-ticket (direktbiljett), the operators must reroute you.
Resplus tickets are sold by SJ (including its app), Norrtåg, Vy and Öresundståg, travel agencies, Pressbyrån and 7-Eleven. They cannot be bought on board. What you’re owed when a train is late is covered in train delay compensation in Sweden.
Tickets, inspection and the surcharge
You must be able to show a valid ticket for the whole journey, so keep your phone charged and save the ticket offline. Don’t board a regional train planning to pay on board. Öresundståg sells no tickets on board, and Resplus tickets can’t be bought on board either. Use the regional authority’s app or a station machine before you step on. Öresundståg tickets also cover one city-zone connecting trip at each end, within an hour of the train.
Without a ticket you pay the fare plus a surcharge, the tilläggsavgift. What the law says:
- It applies to public transport whose fares a public authority sets, as with the regional transport authorities. That authority sets the surcharge rules.
- The law sets no fixed amount. The surcharge must be reasonable given inspection costs and the fare. Amounts differ: Sörmlandstrafiken, for example, raised its bus surcharge from 1 January 2026.
- No surcharge if the missing ticket is excusable because of age, illness, “bristande kännedom om lokala förhållanden” (unfamiliarity with local conditions) or another circumstance. For a visitor defeated by an unfamiliar ticket machine, this can matter. It is judged case by case, not an automatic pass.
- A traveler who refuses to buy a ticket or pay may be removed from the train, with police help if needed.
Commercial train companies such as SJ set their surcharge in their own terms. Don’t argue on board. Take the notice, then dispute it in writing with customer service. If that fails, Sweden’s consumer complaints board, Allmänna reklamationsnämnden (ARN), handles the case for a fee and normally takes about six months.

- Plan the route in Resrobot to see who runs each leg.
- Check that your date is on sale. If not, wait for the next release.
- Compare operators on Stockholm–Gothenburg (SJ, VR) and Stockholm–Malmö (SJ, Snälltåget).
- Book direct as soon as your dates are firm.
- Choose the flexibility level deliberately. There is no cooling-off period.
- Add your discount category and pack ID.
- Two operators? Buy one Resplus ticket, never on board.
- Buy regional tickets in the region’s app or at a station machine before boarding.
- Keep the ticket on a charged phone and show it when asked.

FAQ
When should I book train tickets in Sweden?
As soon as your dates are firm and tickets are on sale. Long-distance fares are dynamic, so the cheapest seats go first and prices rise as a train fills. SJ releases tickets in blocks for each timetable period; summer 2026 went on sale in late January. If a date cannot be booked yet, it has usually not been released.
Can I buy a train ticket on board in Sweden?
Don’t count on it. Öresundståg sells no tickets on board, and Resplus through-tickets cannot be bought on a train or bus. Buy in the operator’s or regional authority’s app, online, or at a station machine before you board. Traveling without a valid ticket can cost a surcharge on top of the fare.
What is Resplus?
Resplus is the national through-ticket scheme run by Samtrafiken. It combines journeys by different train and bus companies into one ticket with an arrival guarantee: if a delay breaks your connection, you are rebooked or given other transport at no extra cost. Can I cancel a Swedish train ticket bought online?
Only if the ticket type allows it. The 14-day right of withdrawal in Swedish distance-selling law does not apply to passenger transport, so the ticket’s own flexibility level decides. The cheapest tickets are the least flexible. If your plans might change, paying for a rebookable or refundable ticket is the only protection.
