Ask a Swede when their holiday is and you will hear a number, not a date. Week numbers run Swedish planning, from school breaks to rail works to bin day. Here is how they work, the one trap at New Year, and how to read Swedish dates and times.
When you need this
A school or ski resort says the holiday falls in vecka 9. A cabin rental runs “week 29, Saturday to Saturday”. Your holiday home comes with bin collection on udda veckor, odd weeks. A rail notice says a station closes in week 41. Or a form shows 2027-03-04 and you are not sure which month that is.
How Swedish week numbers work
Sweden follows the international standard ISO 8601, which SIS, the Swedish Institute for Standards, publishes as SS-ISO 8601. The standard’s definition comes down to two rules:
- A week runs Monday to Sunday.
- Week 1 is the week that contains the year’s first Thursday. That is the same as saying week 1 is the week containing 4 January.
Every week belongs to one year only, and a year has 52 or 53 weeks. The current edition, SS-ISO 8601-1:2022, is valid and covers dates and 24-hour times alike.
Swedes abbreviate vecka (week) as v.: Isof, the state language authority, gives “Vi har semesterstängt v. 3” as its example, meaning “closed for holidays in week 3”. You will see “v. 29” on notices and booking pages.
The week-53 trap at New Year 2026/27
Most people assume week 1 is the week with 1 January in it. It often is not, and 2026/27 is a year when it isn’t.
2026 is a 53-week year. Week 53 runs from Monday 28 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. New Year’s Day 2027 is a Friday, so it falls in week 53 of 2026. The first Thursday of 2027 is 7 January, which puts week 1 of 2027 at 4–10 January.
If you book “week 1” for a New Year trip, you are booking the week after New Year. The next 53-week years after 2026 are 2032 and 2037.
A side effect catches holiday-home renters: week 53 and week 1 are both odd numbers, back to back. Anything scheduled on odd or even weeks can shift at that turn of the year, so check the local calendar for those two weeks.
Key weeks of 2027
We computed these dates from the ISO rule rather than copying them from a calendar site. School holiday dates come from each municipality’s own calendar; independent schools may differ.
| Week | Dates 2027 | Why a visitor meets it |
|---|---|---|
| 53 (of 2026) | 28 Dec 2026 – 3 Jan 2027 | New Year; week 1 has not started |
| 1 | 4–10 Jan | First week of 2027 |
| 7 | 15–21 Feb | Sportlov, Gothenburg (15–19 Feb) |
| 8 | 22–28 Feb | Sportlov, Malmö (22–26 Feb) |
| 9 | 1–7 Mar | Sportlov, Stockholm (1–5 Mar) |
| 10 | 8–14 Mar | Sportlov, Umeå (8–12 Mar) |
| 13 | 29 Mar – 4 Apr | Easter school break, Stockholm (30 Mar – 2 Apr) |
| 25 | 21–27 Jun | Midsummer Eve 25 Jun, Midsummer Day 26 Jun |
| 29 | 19–25 Jul | July holiday peak begins |
| 30 | 26 Jul – 1 Aug | The peak holiday week |
| 31 | 2–8 Aug | July peak ends; Medieval Week opens Sun 8 Aug |
| 44 | 1–7 Nov | Autumn school break, Stockholm (1–5 Nov) |
| 52 | 27 Dec 2027 – 2 Jan 2028 | Last week of 2027 |
To convert any week yourself: find the Monday of week 1, the Monday on or before 4 January, then add seven days for each week after the first. For 2027, week 1 starts on 4 January, so week 29 starts 196 days later, on 19 July.
Where visitors meet week numbers
School holidays. Sportlov, the winter school break, is set by each municipality, so there is no national week. In 2027 it runs from week 7 in Gothenburg to week 10 in Umeå, which is why ski resorts are busy for four weeks. Höstlov, the autumn break, is week 44 in Stockholm, covered in Sweden in autumn.
The July holiday. Swedish law gives employees four consecutive weeks off in June to August unless otherwise agreed, and weeks 29, 30 and 31 are the most popular, with around half of employees away. Offices go quiet, and holiday areas fill. If you are traveling for business, don’t book a first meeting in those weeks.
Rail and road works. Trafikverket’s autumn 2026 notice for Katrineholm C gives only “week 39 and 41”. Week 41 is 5–11 October. Always convert before you book a train; the Stockholm to Gothenburg guide lists the current closures on that line.
Bins and municipal notices. Holiday-home waste collection is announced in weeks. Eskilstuna collects in weeks 16–38 on even weeks or 17–39 on odd weeks; Linköping in weeks 18–41.
Events that straddle two weeks. Visby’s Medieval Week runs from the Sunday of week 31 to the Sunday of week 32, 8–15 August 2027, so you will see both numbers.
How to find the current week
- Your phone or computer calendar almost always has a “show week numbers” setting. Turn it on, and set the week to start on Monday so the numbers match Sweden’s.
- Swedish printed calendars and diaries show the week number on every week, which is why locals know it offhand.
- Just ask. “Vilken vecka är det?” (What week is it?) is an everyday question.
For reference: 25 September 2026 falls in week 39.
Reading Swedish dates
Isof recommends year-month-day as the numeric standard for dating documents: 2027-07-19. You will see it on tickets, receipts, forms, and even on municipal holiday calendars.
When Swedes write a date with a slash or points, the day comes first: 19/7 or 19.7.2027. So 4/5 is 4 May, never 5 April. In running text they use words: 19 juli 2027.
| You see | It means |
|---|---|
| 2027-03-04 | 4 March 2027 |
| 4/3 | 4 March |
| 4.3.2027 | 4 March 2027 |
| 27-03-04 | Ambiguous; Isof advises never shortening the year |
When you write a date for Swedes, use “19 July” or 2027-07-19. Avoid 7/19.
The 24-hour clock
Sweden uses the 24-hour clock everywhere a time is printed: timetables, opening hours, tickets. An 8:30 pm departure is 20.30.
In Swedish writing, the separator is a period, 14.30, which Isof calls the Swedish convention; the colon, 14:30, is the accepted international form and common on screens. Both mean the same thing. Opening hours are often written as bare figures: “10–20” on a shop door means 10:00 to 20:00, as our opening-hours guide shows.
When summer time ends at 03.00 on the last Sunday in October, clock times shift an hour but week numbers do not.
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking “week 1” around New Year 2026/27 and arriving a week early.
- Converting with a calendar set to start weeks on Sunday.
- Reading 2027-03-04 as 3 April, or 5/6 as 6 May.
- Treating sportlov as one national week.
- Planning a first business meeting in weeks 29–31.
- Reading 20.30 as a price or a decimal instead of 8:30 pm.

FAQ
What week is it in Sweden?
Sweden counts weeks under ISO 8601: Monday to Sunday, with week 1 being the week that holds the year’s first Thursday. Most phones and calendars can show the number; set the week start to Monday. For example, 25 September 2026 is in week 39. If you have no device handy, ask “Vilken vecka är det?” and anyone will know.
Why do Swedes use week numbers?
Because Swedish planning runs on them. Schools publish holidays as week numbers, employers plan leave by week, and notices for rail works and waste collection give weeks rather than dates. Swedish calendars print the number on every week, so locals always know it. Isof’s model sentence for the abbreviation is “Vi har semesterstängt v. 3” — closed for holidays, week 3.
When does week 1 start in 2027?
On Monday 4 January 2027. The year starts on a Friday, and under ISO 8601 week 1 is the week with the year’s first Thursday, which is 7 January. So 1–3 January 2027 still belong to week 53 of 2026. That catches out anyone booking “week 1” around New Year.
What dates is week 29 in 2027?
Monday 19 July to Sunday 25 July 2027. Week 30 is 26 July to 1 August and week 31 is 2 to 8 August. These three weeks are the peak of the Swedish summer holiday, with around half of employees off, so offices are quiet and holiday areas full.
How do Swedes write dates?
In documents and forms the numeric standard is year-month-day: 2027-07-19. When Swedes use a slash or points, the day comes first: 19/7 or 19.7.2027. In running text they write 19 juli 2027. Never read a Swedish slash date the American way: 4/5 is 4 May.
Does Sweden use the 24-hour clock?
Yes. Timetables, opening hours, tickets and bookings use 24-hour times, so an 8 pm departure is 20.00. In Swedish writing the separator is a period (14.30), while the colon (14:30) is the accepted international form and common on screens. After the abbreviation kl. for “at”, Swedes write figures.
What is week 53?
A 53rd week occurs in years where the ISO rule leaves an extra week at the end, for example 2026. Week 53 of 2026 runs from Monday 28 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. The next year with 53 weeks after that is 2032.
