You don’t need a car for a Swedish ski week. Åre has a railway station in the middle of the village, and Sälen gets a new train-plus-bus link this winter. What decides the trip is the weekday you travel, where the bus stops, and how each operator handles your skis.
When you need this
You’re planning a ski trip to Åre or Sälen and would rather sleep on a train than drive mountain roads in the dark. Maybe you’re landing at Arlanda or Copenhagen and want to continue north, or you’re bringing your own skis and want to know whether the train will take them. Or you’re trying to make a family week fit a train that only runs on certain days.
Åre or Sälen at a glance
The two biggest Swedish ski destinations are completely different for a car-free traveller. Åre sits on the railway; Sälen is a road-only place in the Dalarna mountains.
| Åre (Jämtland) | Sälen (Dalarna) | |
|---|---|---|
| Railway station | In the middle of the village | None; nearest rail stop on the ski route is Mora |
| Direct from Stockholm | SJ night train daily; SJ afternoon express | Fjällexpressen coach (Kläppen and Sälens by only); flight |
| Direct from Malmö / Göteborg | Snälltåget winter night trains | Snälltåget Saturday train to Mora + linked bus; coaches |
| Regional link | Norrtåg trains to Östersund and Sundsvall | Dalatrafik bus 133 to Mora |
| Nearest airport | Åre Östersund, about 80 km | Scandinavian Mountains Airport, 10–25 min |
| Ski bus on site | Free with a SkiPass | Free with a SkiPass |
Åre by train
Åre station is in the middle of the village, and SJ, Snälltåget and Norrtåg all stop there. Many places to stay are within walking distance; for the rest there are local buses and taxis.
From Stockholm, the backbone is SJ’s night train. A Trafikverket contract from 13 December 2026 requires one night train in each direction every day between Stockholm and Duved, via Östersund and Åre. You can choose a seat, a couchette or a sleeping compartment. The catch is timing: SJ’s tickets for the winter-sports period, 11 January to 4 April 2027, go on sale only at the end of October 2026.
SJ also runs a daily afternoon express to Åre and Duved, made permanent in February 2026. In that announcement it left Stockholm at 16:50 and reached Åre at 23:21, so expect a late-evening arrival. Check the times for your date, because a new timetable starts in December.
From Malmö and Göteborg, Snälltåget runs winter night trains from 16 December 2026 to 25 April 2027. Last winter’s pages, and some guides, still say 2 May; the operator now says 25 April. The train leaves Malmö in the afternoon. It then runs either through Småland and Östergötland or up the west coast via Göteborg-Mölndal, before calling at Stockholm and Uppsala. It reaches Åre early the next morning, at about 07:35 in the published timetable, and continues to Duved, Enafors and Storlien.
Most Snälltåget departures fit the usual mountain changeover days: Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Two numbered trains, 3904/13904 outbound and 3905/13905 home, must be booked as a return at the same time.
Gothenburg is the awkward origin. SJ no longer runs a regular night train from Gothenburg to Åre. Only the Snälltåget departures routed via Göteborg-Mölndal give you a direct train, and only on certain dates.
By day from Östersund or Sundsvall, Norrtåg’s regional trains run Sundsvall–Östersund–Åre–Storlien. Östersund to Åre took about 70 minutes in the 2025–26 timetable.
Sälen without a car
There is no railway to Sälen. You have four options.
- Snälltåget to Mora plus a linked bus (new for 2026–27). Saturdays only, from 19 December 2026 to 10 April 2027, both outbound and home. The train leaves Malmö early in the morning, normally via Stockholm and on some dates via Göteborg-Mölndal, and reaches Mora in the afternoon. A bus waits in Mora and continues to Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen, Hundfjället and Stöten. Search all the way to your stop in Sälen and the bus is booked with the train.
- Vy bus4you from Göteborg. Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, stopping at Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället.
- Fjällexpressen coaches, 17 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, mainly on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Check the line before booking (see below).
- SJ to Mora plus Dalatrafik bus 133. Dalatrafik, Dalarna’s public transport authority, runs line 133 from Mora via Älvdalen to Sälen centrum and the ski areas, with only a few departures a day. Train and bus are booked separately, and nothing links them if the train runs late.
The coach stop trap. Fjällexpressen runs two lines. The Malmö–Göteborg line stops at the SkiStar areas, including Lindvallen, Högfjällshotellet, Tandådalen and Hundfjället, and continues to Stöten and Trysil. The Stockholm line stops in Sälen only at Kläppen, Transtrand and Sälens by before heading to Idre. It suits Kläppen, but not Lindvallen or Tandådalen.
A Saturday-only train means a Saturday-to-Saturday stay. If your lodging runs Sunday to Sunday, a coach or the SJ-plus-bus combination will fit better.
Flying in
Åre Östersund Airport is about 80 km from Åre, with direct flights from Stockholm Arlanda. In the ski season you can pre-book a transfer straight to fixed stops in Åre and Duved, which takes about an hour. The alternative is airport bus line 4 to central Östersund, about 30 minutes, then the train. Line 4 runs to its own timetable, not to flight times. Pay with the regional Länstrafiken Jämtland app or by card on board.
From Göteborg and Malmö, flying to Åre normally means a change on the way, which is why the direct night train often wins. Trondheim’s Værnes airport in Norway is about 130 km from Åre and works too. Continue by transfer, car or train via Storlien.
Scandinavian Mountains Airport sits 10 to 25 minutes from the SkiStar areas in Sälen. Its published 2026–27 schedule includes Stockholm Arlanda on Thursdays and Sundays from 20 December to 21 March. Book the transfer bus together with your flight. Our Sälen ski guide lists the international routes.
Skis and luggage, operator by operator
This is where trips go wrong. Every operator has its own rule, and none of them is “bring whatever you like”.
| Operator | Skis | Other luggage |
|---|---|---|
| SJ | Special luggage, in a bag, placed so it cannot fall over; may be refused if the train is full | Two bags up to 80 × 50 × 35 cm and 20 kg each, plus one small item |
| Snälltåget to Åre | Must be checked in to the luggage van if you travel in a seat or shared berth; fee; not via Röjan | Two bags up to 55 × 45 × 25 cm plus a personal item |
| Snälltåget to Sälen | Always checked in, even in a private compartment; max 10 kg | Two small bags, plus one bag up to 80 × 50 × 35 cm in the vestibule |
| Fjällexpressen | Paid special luggage; boot bag extra | One suitcase and one hand bag; no pets |
| Vy bus4you | Check the operator’s rules at booking | Check at booking |
Checked luggage on Snälltåget is handed in and collected at the train on the platform, against a receipt. You can’t get to it during the journey, so keep your boots and anything you need overnight with you. On the Sälen route, boots go to your seat and don’t count toward your bag allowance.
Pack in several soft bags rather than one big case; Snälltåget asks for this, and a private compartment has no room for anything bigger than 55 × 45 × 25 cm. Or skip the problem: SkiStar suggests pre-booking rental skis and travelling light.
The last mile
Both resorts run SkiStar’s ski bus between lodging and lifts, and it’s free with a valid SkiPass, which works as your ticket. In Åre it links Åre by, Björnen, Duved and Tegefjäll, and Länstrafiken runs it. In Sälen it links Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället. The 2026–27 timetables weren’t published by mid-October 2026.
Snälltåget sells connecting transfers on the same ticket from several stations. From Åre station it goes to Åre Björnen, and from Undersåker to Vålådalen, Trillevallen and Edsåsdalen. From Enafors it goes to Storulvån, and from Röjan, or Östersund on some dates, to Vemdalen and Funäsfjällen.
A night train that arrives at 07:35 usually means hours before you can check in. Ask your lodging about early luggage drop before you book.
Booking timing and pitfalls
- Book SJ’s winter-sports night trains when sales open at the end of October 2026; the sportlov weeks (Sweden’s February school sports holiday, weeks 7–10, 15 February to 14 March 2027) are among the busiest.
- Pre-book ski check-in or special luggage. Snälltåget says ski places on the Sälen route are limited.
- Recheck times the week before. Snälltåget warns that engineering works can change its timetable, and its Sälen times are preliminary.
- Allow slack in Vasaloppet week. The race starts in Sälen on 7 March 2027, and that week and the school holidays jam the roads around Sälen and Mora.
- Fjällexpressen refunds nothing without its cancellation cover, bought at booking for 10% of the price. For your rights on a late coach, see long-distance coaches in Sweden.
- Interrail works on Snälltåget with a paid seat or berth reservation, booked as single journeys; the reservation table lists the Jämtland route.

FAQ
Can you get to Åre by train?
Yes, and the station is in the middle of the village. SJ runs a night train every day from Stockholm under a contract starting 13 December 2026, plus a daily afternoon express. Snälltåget runs winter night trains from Malmö, some via Göteborg-Mölndal, from 16 December 2026 to 25 April 2027. Norrtåg regional trains connect Åre with Östersund and Sundsvall.
How do I get to Sälen without a car?
There is no railway to Sälen. New for 2026–27, Snälltåget runs a Saturday train from Malmö to Mora with a linked bus to the ski areas on the same ticket. Vy bus4you and Fjällexpressen run seasonal coaches, and Dalatrafik’s regional line 133 also links Mora and Sälen. You can also fly to Scandinavian Mountains Airport.
Can I take my skis on the train in Sweden?
Yes, but the rules differ. SJ accepts skis as special luggage if they are in a bag and placed so they cannot fall. Snälltåget requires skis to be checked in to the luggage van in seats and shared berths on its Jämtland trains, and always on the Sälen route, for a fee. Pre-book, because ski space is limited.
Is there a train from Gothenburg to Åre or Sälen?
To Åre, some Snälltåget winter night trains stop at Göteborg-Mölndal; SkiStar notes SJ no longer runs a regular Gothenburg night train to Åre. To Sälen, a few Saturday Snälltåget departures run via Göteborg-Mölndal to Mora. Most Gothenburg travellers to Sälen take a direct coach: Vy bus4you or Fjällexpressen.
Which coach goes to the SkiStar areas in Sälen?
Vy bus4you’s Göteborg line stops at Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället. Fjällexpressen’s Malmö–Göteborg line also serves those areas and continues to Stöten and Trysil. Fjällexpressen’s Stockholm line stops in Sälen only at Kläppen, Transtrand and Sälens by before continuing to Idre, so it suits Kläppen better than the SkiStar areas.
How do I get from Åre Östersund Airport to Åre?
During the ski season you can pre-book a transfer from the airport directly to fixed stops in Åre and Duved, taking about an hour. Otherwise take bus line 4 to central Östersund, about 30 minutes, and continue by train. Line 4 runs to its own timetable, not flight times, so a late flight can mean a missed bus.
Is the ski bus free in Åre and Sälen?
Yes, for SkiPass holders. SkiStar’s ski bus links lodging and ski areas in both resorts, and a valid SkiPass works as the ticket. In Åre the bus is run by Länstrafiken. SkiStar had not yet published the 2026–27 ski-bus timetables in mid-October 2026, so check them closer to your trip.
Can I use an Interrail pass to get to the Swedish ski resorts?
On Snälltåget, yes, but you must always book and pay for a seat or berth reservation, and only single journeys can be booked. Tick the Interrail box in the booking, and book everyone in your group together. Snälltåget’s reservation table lists Malmö–Jämtland and Stockholm–Jämtland, the route to Åre.
