“Sälen” is not one resort but a row of them, run by three companies with three different lift passes. This guide sorts out which is which, when each opens in 2026–27, how to get there by air, rail, coach or car, and what the winter-tyre law means for drivers.
When you need this
- You are planning a ski week in Sälen from abroad, especially from the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands or Germany.
- A package says “Sälen” and you want to know which resort it actually puts you in.
- You are choosing between flying, train plus bus, a direct coach or driving.
- You want to combine downhill with cross-country skiing or the Vasaloppet week.
The resorts and who runs them
Sälen (Sälenfjällen, the Sälen mountains) is a string of ski areas in the low mountains of north-western Dalarna, close to the Norwegian border. SkiStar runs four of them as “SkiStar Sälen” and calls it Sweden’s largest ski resort: 105 lifts, 101 runs, more than 65 km of cross-country tracks. The vertical is modest at 303 m. “Biggest” here means lifts and runs, not height; Stöten, next door, has 398 m.
| Area | Operator | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Lindvallen | SkiStar | The hub; SkiStar calls it one of Europe’s largest children’s and beginners’ areas. Valleberget, the Experium water park, a nightly light show on the slope |
| Högfjället | SkiStar | The smallest and cheapest SkiStar area: 6 lifts, 9 green and blue runs, transport lifts to Lindvallen, the Högfjällshotellet après-ski |
| Tandådalen | SkiStar | Steeper runs, a large snow park, and gentler carving slopes on the eastern side (Östra Tandådalen) |
| Hundfjället | SkiStar | Runs facing several directions, the very steep Väggen (“the Wall”), and the Trollskogen forest run for children |
| Kläppen | Kläppen Ski Resort | The first resort you reach from the south; family-focused, with its own gondola |
| Stöten | Stöten i Sälen AB | The northernmost resort; 398 m of vertical, the most in Sälen, and a new six-seat chairlift for 2026–27 |
| Näsfjället | — | Closed since a 2021 bankruptcy and offered for sale; we found no plans to open in 2026–27 |
Many older guides still list Näsfjället as Sälen’s quiet northern resort. It went bankrupt in 2021, its lifts have not run since, and in September 2025 the whole facility was up for sale. Don’t book lodging there expecting lifts unless the seller confirms it in writing.
Which lift pass covers what
This is where most planning goes wrong. A pass from one operator does not work at the others.
| Pass | Covers | Children |
|---|---|---|
| SkiStar SkiPass | Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen, Hundfjället; 3+ day passes include 2 days in Trysil, Norway | Free up to and including age 6, with an approved helmet |
| SkiStar Högfjället destination pass (resmålspass) | Högfjället only, cheaper | — |
| Kläppen Skipass | Kläppen only; everyone needs a Keycard | Free up to and including age 7 (Keycard still needed) |
| Stöten SkiPass / SkiPass Plus | Stöten only; SkiPass Plus must match lodging booked through Stöten | — |
A few rules worth knowing:
- SkiStar passes can be cancelled until the day before first use (conditions and a fee may apply). A family pass is shared by two adults who take turns with the children. Early-morning skiing (Manchestermorgon, 07:30–09:00) on set lifts is included.
- Kläppen passes are personal except the shared parents’ card (Föräldrakortet).
- All three price by date and say booking online and early is cheapest. None prints a fixed list price, so we don’t either.
Season 2026–27 by area
Opening day is not one date. SkiStar’s four areas open a week apart, and the independents keep their own calendars. All dates depend on snow.
| Resort / area | Opens | Closes |
|---|---|---|
| Lindvallen (SkiStar) | 4 December 2026 (Ski Test Weekend; earlier if snow allows) | 18 April 2027 |
| Högfjället, Tandådalen, Hundfjället (SkiStar) | 11 December 2026 | 11 April 2027 |
| Stöten | 10 December 2026 | 11 April 2027 |
| Kläppen | 11 December 2026 | 4 April 2027 |
Easter 2027 falls on 28 March, so all areas are open over Easter, but a trip after 11 April means Lindvallen only.
SkiStar’s lift hours change with the light. Until 19 December most lifts run 09:00–15:30, with selected lifts until 18:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. From 20 December to 5 February Lindvallen keeps selected lifts open to 18:00 every day and the other areas take turns. From 6 February most lifts run 09:00–16:30. On Christmas Eve everything runs 09:00–14:00.
Both big operators offer a snow guarantee. SkiStar promises at least 30 open runs in Sälen from 18 December 2026 to 4 April 2027; it doesn’t cover lifts closed for storms or technical faults. Kläppen promises at least 16 runs and 2 km of track from opening day to the last day.
Crowds: Swedish sportlov (February school sports holiday) runs in weeks 7–10, 15 February to 14 March 2027, depending on the municipality. The Vasaloppet winter week, 26 February to 7 March, overlaps it. Expect full lodging and heavy traffic then.
Flying to Sälen
Scandinavian Mountains Airport sits right by the Sälen mountains. The airport calls Sälen Sweden’s largest alpine ski resort. The transfer bus takes about 10 minutes to Hundfjället and Tandådalen, 20 to Högfjället and 25 to Lindvallen. Trysil in Norway is about 40 minutes by car.
The 2026–27 schedule published by the airport (checked 1 October 2026):
| From | Days | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Stockholm Arlanda | Thursdays and Sundays (extra Fridays 26 Feb–5 Mar) | 20 Dec 2026 – 21 Mar 2027 |
| Copenhagen | Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays (extra mid-February) | 17 Dec 2026 – 28 Mar 2027 |
| London Gatwick | Saturdays; Sundays; three extra Sundays | 12 Dec 2026 – 11 Apr 2027 |
| London Heathrow | Sundays 14 and 21 Feb | February 2027 only |
| Manchester | Saturdays | 19 Dec 2026 – 13 Mar 2027 |
| Amsterdam | Saturdays | 19 Dec 2026 – 20 Mar 2027 |
| Brussels | Saturdays | 19 Dec 2026 – 20 Mar 2027 |
| Groningen | Saturdays | 19 Dec 2026 – 13 Mar 2027 |
| Aarhus, Aalborg | Two Sundays each in February | February 2027 only |
No German route is on that list. Last winter, TUI fly’s Saturday flight from Düsseldorf was the only direct link from Germany. Västflyg’s flights from Trollhättan and Växjö aren’t listed for 2026–27 either. The airport adds routes once tickets are bookable, so check its schedule page before you plan around a flight.
Book your airport transfer in advance to match your flight. Taxis at the airport are limited, and airlines’ ski-luggage rules differ, so reserve a ski slot when you book.
Train, coach and car
From Stockholm without a car:
- Coach: Fjällexpressen runs Stockholm–Uppsala–Rättvik–Sälen–Idre from 17 December 2026 to 11 April 2027; check which Sälen stop serves your resort. Its other line runs Malmö–Göteborg–Sälen–Stöten–Trysil.
- Train plus bus (new for 2026–27): Snälltåget runs on Saturdays from 19 December 2026 to 10 April 2027. It leaves Malmö in the morning, normally via Stockholm and some weeks via Göteborg, and reaches Mora in the afternoon. A connecting bus takes you on to Sälen. Times are preliminary. SkiStar sells this as a package from Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö, Linköping and Uppsala.
- Flight: the Arlanda route above.
From Gothenburg: Vy bus4you runs direct coaches on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, stopping at all four SkiStar areas.
By car, including from Germany: the drive ends on mountain roads in winter conditions, so the tyre law applies (see our winter tyres guide):
- From 1 December to 31 March, cars need winter tyres or equivalent equipment whenever there is snow, ice, slush or frost on any part of the road. The police decide whether conditions apply.
- Minimum tread in that period is 3 mm, more than Germany’s 1.6 mm legal minimum.
- The rule covers foreign-registered cars. Driving without winter tyres in winter conditions costs the driver a 2,000 kr fixed fine, and the owner another.
- Studded tyres are allowed from 1 October to 15 April, and outside that if winter conditions exist or are expected.
During the Vasaloppet week and school holidays, Stöten advises alternative routes into Sälen via Lima or Rörbäcksnäs, or route 66 via Malung, because the Mora side clogs. Kläppen, the first resort from the south, has free parking and public EV chargers. For the ferry and road part from Germany, see driving to Sweden from Germany.
Families, ski-in lodging and cross-country
Choosing an area: Lindvallen or Kläppen for small children and beginners, Högfjället for quiet green and blue runs, Tandådalen or Stöten for steeper skiing and snow parks, and Hundfjället if someone wants to try Väggen.
Ski-in/ski-out: SkiStar Lodge Lindvallen and SkiStar Lodge Hundfjället sit on the slopes. Stöten sells its Ski Lodge Soltorget as right next to the run, and at Kläppen most lodging is by pistes or ski roads. SkiStar’s free ski bus links lodging and ski areas for anyone with a SkiPass or Cross-CountryPass.
Cross-country: SkiStar has lit Cross-Country Arenas with classic and skate tracks in Lindvallen (1.5 and 2.5 km lit loops), Tandådalen (2.7 km) and Hundfjället (2.5 km), which need a Cross-CountryPass. The 6 km and 6.5 km top trails (Toppspår), reached by lift, are free and open around week 6. Sälen is also the start of the Vasaloppet: the 90 km classic race leaves Berga by at 08:00 on Sunday 7 March 2027 for Mora. See our Vasaloppet guide and cross-country skiing guide for passes and etiquette.

FAQ
Is one lift pass valid in all of Sälen?
No. SkiStar’s SkiPass covers its four areas: Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället, plus two days in Trysil with a pass of three days or more. Kläppen and Stöten are separate companies with their own passes, and a cheaper SkiStar destination pass covers only Högfjället. Check which resort your lodging belongs to before buying.
When does the Sälen ski season 2026–27 start and end?
SkiStar opens Lindvallen on 4 December 2026 with the Ski Test Weekend, earlier if snow allows, and Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället on 11 December. Stöten opens 10 December and Kläppen 11 December. Kläppen closes 4 April 2027, Stöten and three SkiStar areas 11 April, and Lindvallen 18 April. All dates depend on snow.
Can I fly directly to Sälen?
Yes, to Scandinavian Mountains Airport, 10–25 minutes from the SkiStar areas. For 2026–27 the published schedule lists Stockholm Arlanda, London Gatwick and Heathrow, Manchester, Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg, Amsterdam, Brussels and Groningen, mostly weekly from mid-December to March. No German route is listed as of 1 October 2026; the airport adds routes when they become bookable.
How do I get to Sälen from Stockholm without a car?
Two main options. Fjällexpressen runs seasonal coaches from Stockholm via Uppsala and Rättvik to Sälen from 17 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. SkiStar also sells train-plus-transfer packages from Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö, Linköping and Uppsala, using Snälltåget to Mora and a bus on to Sälen. A flight from Arlanda runs on Thursdays and Sundays.
Do I need winter tyres to drive to Sälen?
Yes, from 1 December to 31 March whenever there is snow, ice, slush or frost on the road, which is normal around Sälen. The rule covers foreign cars, and the tread must be at least 3 mm, more than Germany’s legal minimum. Driving without them costs the driver a 2,000 kr fixed fine and the owner another.
Which part of Sälen is best for families with small children?
SkiStar pitches Lindvallen as one of Europe’s largest children’s and beginners’ areas, with Valleberget, conveyor lifts and the Experium water park. Högfjället is the quiet green-and-blue option. Kläppen markets itself to families and lets children up to 7 ski free. SkiStar passes are free to age 6, conditional on a helmet.
Can I combine downhill skiing with cross-country or the Vasaloppet?
Yes. SkiStar has lit cross-country arenas in Lindvallen, Tandådalen and Hundfjället, plus free top trails from around week 6. The Vasaloppet starts at Berga by in Sälen on 7 March 2027 and runs 90 km to Mora, closing a winter week from 26 February. Expect heavy traffic and full lodging that week.
