Gävle is the first city of Norrland on the line north from Stockholm, and most visitors know it only for its Christmas goat. This page covers the rest: getting there and around, the old town and museums, and the coast on either side.
When you need this
You are planning a day trip or a night’s stop north of Stockholm or Uppsala, or breaking a long rail journey to Sundsvall, the High Coast or Hälsingland. Maybe you are taking children to Furuvik and wondering what else is nearby. Or you are coming for the Gävle Goat in Advent and want something to fill the rest of the day.
The city at a glance
Gävle kommun had 104,108 residents on 31 December 2025 and 104,008 at the end of August 2026, according to Statistics Sweden (SCB). The city sits on both banks of the Gävle river (Gävleån) where it runs into the Bothnian Sea, and it has a large port and a busy rail junction.
The goat already has its own guide, and Furuvik’s tickets are covered in our theme parks guide. What neither covers is the city itself and the coast around it:
| Area | What it is | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Gamla Gefle | Old wooden district, houses from the 1700s | South bank, city center |
| Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum | The national railway museum | Rälsgatan 1, city |
| Länsmuseet Gävleborg | The county museum | Södra Strandgatan 20, riverbank |
| Furuvik | Zoo and amusement park by the sea | 10 km south |
| Billudden and Rullsand | Nature reserve and sandy beach | South, in Uppsala County |
| Norrlandet | 15 km seaside trail, fishing village of Bönan | North of the city |
| Limön | Nature-reserve island in the archipelago | Offshore, by summer boat |
Getting there
Take the train. On a weekday in October 2026, Trafikverket’s live boards showed SJ high-speed trains (Snabbtåg) running from Stockholm C to Gävle C in 1 h 20–22 min, and SJ InterCity trains in about 1 h 24 min. Every one of them called at Arlanda C and Uppsala C, so if you land at Arlanda you can board there and skip central Stockholm entirely; our Arlanda to Uppsala guide covers the trains north from the airport station.
Mälartåg, the regional train, runs at least hourly between Uppsala and Gävle via Tierp, and its line passes Furuvik. North and west of Gävle, the X-Tåget regional trains run to Ljusdal and Sundsvall. Trains are sometimes cancelled — one Snabbtåg was on the day we checked — so look at the live board before you travel. For tickets and operators in general, see train travel in Sweden and our guide to Mälartåg.
Getting around
Local buses and the X-Tåget regional trains belong to X-trafik, Gävleborg County’s public transport. Fares are zone-based, and where you buy matters:
| Where you buy | How you pay | Price level |
|---|---|---|
| X-trafik app, in advance | Card or Swish | Lowest |
| Customer center | Card, travel funds, cash or company card | Advance price |
| On board bus or X-Tåget | Card, travel funds (reskassa) or company card | Higher |
Cash is listed only at the customer centers, so don’t plan to pay coins to the driver. A single ticket in one to three zones gives you two hours to change; four zones or more gives four hours. X-trafik single tickets are also valid on Mälartåg between Gävle and Furuvik, which makes the train the easy way to the park. Our guide to paying for buses in Sweden explains how the regional systems differ.
Gamla Gefle and the center
The town fire of 1869 burned the district north of the river, and Gävle was re-planned afterwards with regular, wide streets. The south side kept much of its older timber building, and the best-preserved part is Gamla Gefle (Old Gävle). Visit Gävle dates its houses to the 1700s and its cobbled street pattern partly to the Middle Ages. Start at Snus-Majas tomt on Övre Bergsgatan and wander.
In the center stands the castle, begun in 1583 and rebuilt after a fire in the 1750s. For green space, Visit Gävle calls Boulognerskogen one of Sweden’s largest city parks.
The museums
Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum, the national railway museum, is the freshness trap in most Gävle guides. It closed in 2017 for a rebuild that was meant to take two years; delays stretched that to 2024. Guides written in between still list it as shut. It is open again, year-round, Tuesday to Sunday 11:00–17:00, and under-19s go free. The collection moved to Gävle in 1970 and holds more than 100 locomotives and some 150 coaches. In the autumn half-term (week 44) a rail bus shuttles ticket holders between the museum and Gävle C.
Länsmuseet Gävleborg, the county museum on the river, is closed on Mondays. Under-20s go free, and the shop, café and some rooms are free for everyone. Its own page listed Wednesday hours two different ways when we checked (11–17 and 11–20), so confirm before planning a late visit.
South: Furuvik and Billudden
Furuvik, about 10 km south on road 76, is a zoo and amusement park by the sea with more than 30 animal species. Mälartåg stops at a platform right outside the main entrance, and bus 501 runs from Gävle. In summer the day ticket includes the rides. The park is seasonal: a summer season, then Halloween to 31 October, with evening Horror Nights in 2026 on 17, 23–24 and 30–31 October. Between those dates it closes — it was shut on 15 October 2026 — so check the opening calendar for your day. A guest harbor and a campsite sit on the coast next to it.
Further south, over the county line, the Billudden nature reserve covers 1,904 hectares where the Uppsala esker runs into the sea. It has Europe’s largest stand of sea buckthorn, Uppland’s biggest drift-sand field and the beach at Rullsand. Two practical points catch visitors out. It is in Uppsala County, so the bus to the Rullsand stop is a UL bus, not X-trafik. And the reserve rules are binding: tents only in the campsite’s tent area, fires only at the manager’s fire sites, and no loose dogs.
North: Norrlandet, Bönan and Limön
North of the city, the Norrlandet seaside trail (Norrlandets kustled) runs about 15 km between Engeltofta and Marskärsudden. Take bus 95 to Gävle Engeltofta for the northern end, or get off at Utvalnäs Rännavägen for the southern one. The trail splits into four stretches of 3 to 6 km, so you don’t have to walk it all:
| Stretch | Length | Ground |
|---|---|---|
| Marskärsudden–Gråberget | about 3 km | Wide gravel paths, small roads |
| Gråberget | about 3.5 km | Narrow, hilly forest path; sea view |
| Bönan–Huseliiharen | about 5.5 km | Gravel paths past manors and summer homes |
| Huseliiharen–Engeltofta | about 6 km | Gravel paths, small roads |
Thirteen information boards show fire sites, swimming spots and summer toilets. Bring your own firewood for the coffee spots at Soludden, Utvalnäs udde and Marskärsudden. Bönan, on the trail, has been a fishing village since the 1600s and has a small lighthouse museum and a smokehouse; Visit Gävle lists it as open all year.
Limön is the archipelago island, a 205-hectare nature reserve managed by Gävle kommun. It has an old fishing village, two lighthouses and a 4 km nature-trail loop, and at Limöskaten on its north-east shore the Bothnian Sea’s limestone is visible — one of very few places in Sweden where it is. Here is the catch most guides miss: in 2026 the Limö boat ran only Wednesday to Sunday in weeks 28 to 31, with one sailing each way, out from Gävle at 10:00 and back from Limön at 16:00. That gives you six hours. Miss the return and you stay the night. The reserve rules are binding: fires only at the marked sites, dogs on a lead, and no cycling.
The coastal paths and beaches are also open to you under allemansrätten, Sweden’s right of public access; our allemansrätten guide sets out what it allows, and the Swedish beaches guide covers bathing water.
When to go
| Period | What’s on |
|---|---|
| High summer (weeks 28–31 in 2026) | Limön boat Wed–Sun; the island’s café Wed–Sat 10:00–15:30; free guided walks met the boat on 15, 16 and 23 July 2026 |
| Summer season | Furuvik open, rides included in the day ticket |
| October | Furuvik Halloween to 31 October; Horror Nights 17, 23–24, 30–31 October 2026 |
| Week 44 | Rail-bus shuttle Gävle C–Railway Museum |
| Advent | The Gävle Goat goes up; inauguration Sunday 29 November 2026, its 60th year |
| Year-round | Railway Museum (Tue–Sun), Bönan, the Norrlandet trail |
Mistakes to avoid
- Planning Limön for June or August. In 2026 the boat sailed only in weeks 28–31.
- Skipping the Railway Museum because an older guide says it is closed.
- Paying the on-board bus fare when the app is cheaper.
- Using an X-trafik ticket on the bus to Rullsand, which is in Uppsala County.
- Turning up at Furuvik on a closed autumn weekday.
- Looking for the old wooden town north of the river; Gamla Gefle is on the south side.

FAQ
How do I get from Stockholm to Gävle?
By train. On a weekday in October 2026, SJ high-speed trains took 1 h 20–22 min from Stockholm C to Gävle C and SJ InterCity trains about 1 h 24 min, both calling at Arlanda C and Uppsala C on the way. Mälartåg runs at least hourly between Uppsala and Gävle. Check the live board on the day, since trains are sometimes cancelled.
How do I get to Furuvik from Gävle?
Furuvik is about 10 km south of Gävle. Mälartåg trains stop at a platform right outside the park’s main entrance, and X-trafik single tickets are valid on Mälartåg between Gävle and Furuvik. Bus 501 also runs from Gävle to the Furuvik stop. Drivers pay 110 kronor a day to park, through an app.
How do I get to Limön?
In summer 2026 the Limö boat ran Wednesday to Sunday from week 28 to week 31, leaving Gävle at 10:00 and Limön at 16:00, so you get six hours on the island. Outside those weeks you need your own boat; there are guest jetties in a sheltered harbor. The fare is not on the official page, so ask Visit Gävle.
Is the Railway Museum in Gävle open?
Yes. Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum closed in 2017 for a rebuild meant to take two years, and reopened in 2024. It is open year-round, Tuesday to Sunday 11:00–17:00, at Rälsgatan 1. Adults paid 100 kronor in October 2026, and under-19s enter free. In autumn half-term a rail bus shuttles ticket holders from Gävle C.
Can I pay cash on buses in Gävle?
No. X-trafik lists cash only at its customer centers. The cheapest single ticket is bought in advance in the X-trafik app with a card or Swish; buying on board the bus or X-Tåget with a card costs more. A single ticket in one to three zones gives two hours to change buses.
What is there to do in Gävle besides the goat?
Walk the 1700s wooden houses of Gamla Gefle, see the national Railway Museum and the county museum, and get out to the coast: Furuvik’s zoo and rides to the south, the 15 km Norrlandet seaside trail and the fishing village of Bönan to the north, and Limön island by boat in high summer.
Where can I walk by the sea near Gävle?
On the Norrlandet seaside trail, about 15 km between Engeltofta and Marskärsudden, split into stretches of 3 to 6 km. Take bus 95 to Gävle Engeltofta for the northern end, or get off at Utvalnäs Rännavägen for the south. Thirteen information boards mark fire sites, swimming spots and summer toilets; bring your own firewood.
