Below are three 14-day routes, one for most of the year, one for high summer and one for winter. Every travel time comes from our dated transport guides, and legs we can’t time are marked as such.
When you need this
You have around two weeks and want more than the two bases that fit in one week in Sweden. Maybe you want the cities and Lapland without a week of transit. Maybe it’s summer and you’re weighing Gotland, the High Coast or the inland railway. Or it’s winter, and the trip is about northern lights, the Icehotel or the Jokkmokk market.
Why two weeks means three regions
Sweden is about 1,570 km long, and Stockholm to Kiruna alone is about 1,235 km by road. A trip that covers the south, the Stockholm–Gothenburg belt and the north spends about two days in transit. A week can’t spare that. Two weeks can, as long as the night train carries the long leg north and you stop at three regions, not five.

Route A: the Grand Loop
Day 1 — Copenhagen Airport to Malmö. The train takes about 20 minutes. Keep your passport or ID card within reach: trains from Denmark stop at Hyllie for a Swedish ID check. The temporary border control is currently set for 12 May – 11 November 2026, so check whether it has been extended.
Days 2–3 — Malmö, Lund and Skåne. Öresundståg’s Lund–Malmö–Copenhagen line links the cities. A Skånetrafiken 48-hour tourist ticket covers Skåne, or Skåne plus Denmark; activate app tickets before you board. Our Öresundståg guide covers the regional trains.
Day 4 — train to Gothenburg. SJ’s fast trains have taken 2 h 18 min since 14 December 2025, via the Varberg tunnel. Öresundståg also runs the coast line.
Days 5–6 — Gothenburg and its archipelago. See the Gothenburg guide.
Day 7 — train to Stockholm. About three hours on SJ’s fastest trains, and VR runs the same line. Check the date first. Track works near Gothenburg close the line on some weekends until summer 2027; the remaining 2026 closures are 2–4 October, 16–18 October, 13–15 November, 27–29 November and 11–13 December. On those dates, trains are rerouted or replaced by buses (ersättningsbuss). Details: Stockholm to Gothenburg by train.
Days 8–10 — Stockholm. Djurgården, Gamla stan and the archipelago. Every SL ticket is valid year-round on the boats between Strömkajen and Vaxholm. With a fourth day, add Uppsala or, from 7 May to 25 October in 2026, the boat to Birka. How many days in Stockholm has the day-by-day frames.
Day 10, evening — night train north. One SJ night train a day runs Stockholm–Luleå–Boden–Gällivare–Kiruna–Abisko–Narvik, with seats, couchettes (liggvagn) and sleepers (sovvagn). Until 12 December 2026 you change trains at Boden around 6 a.m. SJ expects the cars to run straight through from 13 December. See night train to Lapland.
Day 11 — Kiruna. The station is about 6 km from the centre and unstaffed. A free shuttle bus meets every train.
Days 12–13 — Abisko National Park. The night train stops at Abisko Turiststation. The park was founded in 1909, and Kungsleden runs through it along the Abisko canyon.
Day 14 — fly home. Kiruna–Stockholm Arlanda takes about 90 minutes, flown by SAS and Norwegian all year. The airport is about 9 km from town; flights to Kiruna has the details.
Reverse it if your cheaper flight lands at Arlanda: Arlanda Express reaches Stockholm Central in 18 minutes, and you leave from Copenhagen.
Route B: summer islands and the north
This route only works from mid-June to mid-August, because its northern half runs on summer-only trains.
Days 1–3 — Stockholm, as Route A, days 8–10.
Day 4 — ferry to Gotland. Take the SL commuter train to Nynäshamn; the station is a few hundred meters from the ferry terminal. The crossing to Visby takes about 3 h 15 min. Arrive at least an hour before departure, and if you bring a car, every adult needs valid ID at check-in, and boarding closes 20 minutes before departure. See our Gotland ferry guide.
Days 5–7 — Gotland. Gotlandsleden, a signed cycle route of about 540 km, circles the island on quiet roads. Fårö is a free six-minute road ferry (färja) from Fårösund. Medieval Week fills Visby from 8 to 15 August 2027; Gotland by bike and Medieval Week go deeper.
Day 8 — back to Stockholm by ferry, or fly Visby–Arlanda in about 40–45 minutes.

The High Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage site because the land has risen about 286 m since the ice left. Our Inlandsbanan and High Coast Trail guides cover each ending in full.
Hikers: Kungsleden’s Abisko–Nikkaluokta section is 107 km in seven stages, with STF huts open from around midsummer. It needs most of a week on its own, so it replaces an ending rather than fitting beside one. In Kiruna, the midnight sun lasts from about 29 May to 14 July.
Route C: winter Lapland
Days 1–3 — Stockholm. Winter days are short: Skansen closes at 15:00 on weekdays from 28 September 2026 to 10 January 2027.
Day 3, evening — night train north, or fly Arlanda–Kiruna in about 90 minutes. Winter is the most sought-after night-train season, so book when the batch opens.
Days 4–7 — Kiruna and Jukkasjärvi. The Icehotel stands in Jukkasjärvi, 17 km east of Kiruna along the E10. The winter ice hotel is open December–April, and ICEHOTEL 37 opens on 11 December 2026.
Days 8–11 — Abisko. The night train stops at Abisko Turiststation. Bus line 91 between Kiruna and Abisko runs only from February, so in December and January the train is the way in.
The light. Aurora season runs from September to March, and in Kiruna the northern lights show statistically on every other clear night, most often before midnight. Around midwinter Kiruna has about 27 days without sunrise.
Jokkmokk option, early February. The Jokkmokk winter market runs Thursday to Saturday from the first Thursday of February: 4–6 February 2027. Take the train to Murjek, between Boden and Gällivare, then the road bus that connects with the trains.
Days 12–14 — south and home. Fly Kiruna–Arlanda in about 90 minutes. In winter you can also fly direct to Copenhagen (SAS, three times a week, 17 December 2026 – 7 March 2027) or Düsseldorf (Eurowings, Saturdays, 6 February – 20 March 2027).
Tickets and booking
There is no national rail pass or national ticket. Plan each leg door to door in Resrobot, including the legs this page doesn’t time, then buy from each operator. Sweden without a car explains how the pieces fit.

Book trains when your season’s batch opens: SJ’s summer 2026 tickets went on sale on 28 January 2026. For winter, not everything is bookable yet — on 24 September 2026, VR sold Stockholm–Gothenburg trips only up to 11 December. Our booking timeline lists what to book when.
Season by season
- Late May–mid-July: midnight sun in Kiruna, about 29 May–14 July.
- Midsummer Eve (a Friday between 19 and 25 June): the eve of the midsummer holiday; plan travel around it.
- Mid-June–mid-August: Inlandsbanan’s season (15 June–12 August in 2026).
- July (weeks 29–31): Sweden’s own holiday peak; book trains, ferries and beds early.
- Early August: Medieval Week in Visby, 8–15 August 2027.
- September–March: aurora season in Kiruna.
- December: about seven hours of daylight in the far south, polar night in Kiruna, and the Icehotel opens.

Mistakes to avoid
- Five regions in two weeks. Pick three, and let the night train carry the long leg.
- Treating Inlandsbanan as transport. Östersund to Gällivare took about 14 hours in 2026. It’s a sightseeing day.
- Sleeping through Boden. Before 13 December 2026, set an alarm for about 6 a.m.
- Booking a summer Gotland car place late. Fares rise with demand, and Medieval Week fills the island.
- Expecting aurora in June or midnight sun in winter. Choose Route B or C by what you want to see.
- Expecting the Icehotel in October. It opens in December.
- A tight final connection. In 2025, 86.9% of Swedish passenger trains arrived within five minutes of schedule. Leave at least an hour between train and flight.

FAQ
Is two weeks enough for Sweden?
Enough for three regions, not the whole country. Sweden is about 1,570 km long, so each distant region costs travel time. Two weeks fits the south, Gothenburg, Stockholm and Lapland if the night train carries the long leg north, or Stockholm plus Gotland and the north in summer, or Stockholm plus a week in winter Lapland.
Can I see Stockholm, Gothenburg and Lapland in two weeks?
Yes. Land in Copenhagen, spend three nights in Skåne, take the 2 h 18 min train to Gothenburg, then about three hours to Stockholm. After three or four nights there, take the night train north and fly home from Kiruna in about 90 minutes. Check the Gothenburg line’s closure weekends before booking.
How do I fit Gotland into a two-week trip?
Give it three or four nights from Stockholm. The SL commuter train reaches Nynäshamn, a few hundred meters from the terminal, and the ferry to Visby takes about 3 h 15 min. Or fly from Arlanda in about 40–45 minutes. Summer fares are dynamic and Medieval Week (8–15 August 2027) fills the island, so book early.
Is Inlandsbanan worth it on a two-week trip?
Only in summer, and only as a sightseeing day, not transport. The guided train ran 15 June–12 August in 2026, and Östersund to Gällivare took about 14 hours with stops for meals and sights. Pair it with Snälltåget’s summer night train to Östersund and a flight home from Kiruna. Interrail covers it; 2027 booking opens in spring.
What is a good two-week winter itinerary for Lapland?
Three days in Stockholm, then the night train or a 90-minute flight to Kiruna. Spend four nights around Kiruna and the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, open December–April, then three or four in Abisko for the aurora, which shows on about every other clear night. In early February, the Jokkmokk market (4–6 February 2027) fits too.
Do I need a car for two weeks in Sweden?
No. All three variants run on trains, ferries, buses and flights. The catch is seasonality: Inlandsbanan and Snälltåget’s Östersund night train run only in summer, and Kiruna–Abisko bus line 91 only in its winter and summer seasons. Plan each leg in Resrobot, including the ones without a published travel time.
