When you need this
You’re booking flights or a hotel and wondering how many nights Stockholm deserves. Maybe you’re splitting a week in Sweden and need to know what to cut. Or it’s a winter trip, and you want to know what still opens and how early it closes.
The short answer by trip length
Stockholm’s headline sights cluster tightly. The Vasa Museum, Skansen, ABBA The Museum and Junibacken all stand on Djurgården, reached from T-Centralen by tram 7 or by the line 82 ferry. Gamla stan, the old town on its own island, is one metro stop from T-Centralen on the red and green lines. That’s why a short stay works well here.
The water is what stretches it. Every SL ticket, even a tapped single, is valid all year on the public archipelago boats between Strömkajen and Vaxholm. Beyond Vaxholm the boats cost extra.

One day: Djurgården
One day buys you Djurgården and an evening in Gamla stan, not the city. Pick the Vasa Museum and one of Skansen or ABBA The Museum; all three sit on tram 7.
Order matters, and it flips with the season:
- Summer: be at the Vasa Museum when it opens at 08:30 (June–August). From May to September queues can reach about 30 minutes, mostly in the morning and at lunchtime.
- Winter: go to Skansen first. From 28 September 2026 to 10 January 2027 it closes at 15:00 on weekdays and 16:00 at weekends. The Vasa Museum stays open to 17:00, and to 20:00 on Wednesdays.
ABBA The Museum sells entry in 30-minute time slots, bought online, and the museum reckons a visit takes 1½–2 hours. Skansen is open every day of the year. It’s hilly, so with a wheelchair or stroller use the lift at the main entrance, not the Hazelius Gate at the bottom of a very steep hill.
Two days: add Gamla stan and the city
Day two is Gamla stan by daylight and the city. Time it around the changing of the guard at the Royal Palace: 12:15 Monday to Saturday, 13:15 on Sundays and public holidays (subject to change).
Most state museums have charged adults again since free admission ended with the 2023 budget, so old “free museum day” plans no longer work. What still works:

Three days: add the archipelago
Three days is the answer for most first visits, because the third day goes on the water or in the forest.
- Vaxholm is the cheapest taste of the archipelago: your ordinary SL ticket covers the boat from Strömkajen, all year.
- Grinda has regular boats all year, several a day in summer, and a 9.8 km trail of about three and a half hours on foot. The boat beyond Vaxholm needs a Waxholmsbolaget fare, and the island’s toilets close in winter.
- Tyresta National Park is a bus ride away: bus 834 goes straight to the main entrance.

Five days: add day trips
Five days lets you leave the city twice. None of these needs a car:

Summer vs winter: what the season changes
A December day holds less than a July day. For the same list, plan one extra day in winter.

Between the two sits a short shoulder: Skansen opens 10:00–17:00 until 27 September. The autumn school holiday (24 October–1 November) gives Skansen 10:00–16:00 every day.
Christmas brings its own calendar. Skansen’s Christmas market runs 27–29 November and 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20 December 2026. The Vasa Museum and Junibacken close on 24 and 25 December.
In the archipelago, low season (14 September–29 April) means fewer boats. When the sea freezes, Waxholmsbolaget switches to an ice timetable with fewer, slower departures, some bookable only in advance. Check the day before. Dress for it, too: SMHI’s normal puts Stockholm’s January mean at about −1 °C, against 18.7 °C in July.

Under-7s ride free with a paying traveler, and an adult may take up to six children aged 7–11 free. SL tickets cover all of Stockholm County plus Bålsta and Gnesta, not Uppsala. The metro runs all night on weekends.
For five days in low season, the 30-day ticket does double duty. From 14 September to 29 April an SL ticket valid 30 days or longer covers every Waxholmsbolaget line, while 72-hour and 7-day tickets stop at Vaxholm. Full details are in our Stockholm public transport guide.
Mistakes to avoid
- Planning Skansen for a winter afternoon. It shuts at 15:00 on weekdays from 28 September 2026.
- Putting Birka in an October-to-April plan. The 2026 boat season ended on 25 October.
- Taking a 7-day SL ticket to Grinda. It’s valid only as far as Vaxholm.
- Heading to Stadsmuseet on a Monday. It’s closed.
- Bringing a suitcase to the Vasa Museum or ABBA The Museum on check-out day. The Vasa Museum has no lockers and refuses large and wheeled bags; ABBA The Museum has no room for luggage.
- Forgetting the Arlanda gate. An SL ticket doesn’t open the barrier at Arlanda C: adults pay a 157 kr passage fee on top, and under-18s pass free. See Arlanda to Stockholm.

Is one day enough for Stockholm?
One day is enough for Djurgården and an evening in Gamla stan, not for the city. The Vasa Museum and Skansen or ABBA The Museum fill the day, all reached by tram 7. In winter start at Skansen, which closes at 15:00 on weekdays from 28 September 2026, and finish at the Vasa Museum, open to 17:00.
Is two days enough in Stockholm?
Two days covers the classic first visit: Djurgården’s museums on one day, Gamla stan, the changing of the guard and a free museum slot on the other. It leaves out the archipelago beyond a short boat ride. For two days, tapping a contactless card for each trip is the simplest SL ticket.
How many days do you need in Stockholm with the archipelago?
Plan three days at least. Any SL ticket covers the public boats between Strömkajen and Vaxholm all year, so Vaxholm fits into a normal city ticket. Grinda and islands further out need a Waxholmsbolaget fare on top, except from 14 September to 29 April with an SL ticket valid 30 days or longer.
What day trips can you take from Stockholm without a car?
Within the SL area: Vaxholm by boat, Tyresta National Park by bus 834, and Sigtuna by train to Märsta and bus 570 or 575. Uppsala is on SL commuter line 40 but needs a UL supplement. Birka is reachable only by boat in season, 7 May to 25 October in 2026.
Is Stockholm worth visiting in winter?
Yes, but plan one extra day. From 28 September 2026 Skansen closes at 15:00 on weekdays, the Vasa Museum opens 10:00–17:00 with Wednesdays to 20:00, and archipelago boats run fewer departures. Indoor museums, Skansen’s Christmas market weekends and free evening slots fill the gap.
Which SL ticket should I buy for my Stockholm trip?
It follows the number of days. For one or two days, tap a contactless card for each 75-minute single. For three days, a 72-hour ticket, which starts on first use. For five days, compare the 7-day ticket at 470 kr with the half-price 30-day ticket at 530 kr, valid if activated by 2 December 2026.
