The train is the natural way between Sweden’s two largest cities: central station to central station in about three hours. Until summer 2027, though, the line is being rebuilt near Gothenburg, and the date you pick matters more than the train you pick.
When you need this
You’re planning the Stockholm–Gothenburg leg of a trip and want to know which train to book. Maybe you’re weighing the train against a cheap flight or a coach. Or your dates fall on a weekend between October 2026 and August 2027, and you’ve heard the line is sometimes closed.
Who runs the trains
Two companies sell direct trains on Västra stambanan (the Western Main Line), 455 km of double-track electrified railway:

Both run between Stockholm C and Göteborg C. They set their own prices, and long-distance fares in Sweden are dynamic, so compare both on the same date and book as soon as your plans are firm. One thing to know about timing: when we checked VR’s site on 24 September 2026, its booking window ran to 11 December, the end of the current timetable. The new timetable starts on 13 December.
How long it takes
On a normal day, a direct train takes about three hours, according to Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration. SJ reports that its X 2000 trains averaged three hours and five minutes in 2024. VR does not publish a journey time on its site.
On closure weekends the picture changes. Trains are rerouted via Borås or Vänersborg, which SJ planned to add about an hour. Other trips use a replacement bus near Gothenburg or a change of train. During the eight-week total closure in summer 2026, most trips took from just over four hours to six.
The 2026–2027 track works
Trafikverket has been rebuilding the Göteborg–Alingsås section since January 2025, replacing all the overhead power equipment along the way. The total closure of summer 2026 ended on 16 August. Between Floda and Alingsås the line now runs on one track until 18 July 2027, and on some weekends it closes completely.

In 2027 there are 12 more closure weekends (weeks 1, 5, 7, 8, 10, 14, 16, 20, 24, 31, 32 and 33) and four longer closures of 96 to 120 hours, in weeks 4, 18, 26 and 28. Weekend closures end from week 33. SJ has said it expects normal service from 19 July 2027; that is SJ’s own expectation, not a Trafikverket date.
On a closure weekend, trains between Göteborg and Alingsås become ersättningsbuss (replacement buses). Long-distance trains are rerouted via Borås–Herrljunga or Vänersborg–Öxnered–Herrljunga. Local trains are cut too: SJ Regional runs about hourly between Alingsås and Skövde, and some commuter trains become buses.
There is one more, smaller item on the same line. Trafikverket planned two traffic stops through Katrineholm C in weeks 39 and 41 of 2026 while it builds new passing tracks east of the station. Week 41 is 5–11 October, so check your journey details if you travel that week.
Reliability is the other honest caveat. In 2025, 86.9% of Swedish passenger trains reached their final station within five minutes of schedule, which means about one in eight did not. Our train travel in Sweden guide puts that in context.

The flight looks fastest, but Arlanda is 18 minutes from Stockholm C by Arlanda Express, and Landvetter is 25 km from Gothenburg. SJ compared 2024 journeys including airport time and transfers: 3 hours 5 minutes by train against 3 hours 14 minutes by air, city center to city center. It is the operator’s own figure, but the transfers alone make the point.
The coach takes about twice as long as a normal direct train. FlixBus runs about five a day, and Vy Bus4You also runs coaches on the corridor, calling at Landvetter Airport. On a closure weekend, a flight or coach can be the simpler choice. Our domestic flights guide covers when flying really wins.
At the two stations
Stockholm C. Arlanda Express reaches the airport in 18 minutes. The airport coach and FlixBus leave from Cityterminalen, the bus terminal next to the station; the airport coach takes about 40 minutes. SL’s local commuter trains do not use the long-distance platforms: they stop at Stockholm City, the underground station beside Stockholm Central. Göteborg C. Long-distance coaches and the Landvetter airport bus use Nils Ericson Terminalen, the bus terminal at the station. From 13 December 2026 a new part of Göteborg C opens for Västtåg local trains to Alingsås and Älvängen, on tracks 21–24, and some walks between platforms get slightly longer. Bikes, assistance and delays
- Bikes: SJ takes a bike only disassembled or folded in a bicycle bag, at most 140 × 85 × 30 cm and 25 kg, stowed as luggage. VR takes no bicycles at all, and no e-bikes or e-scooters. More in bikes on trains in Sweden.
- Assistance: EU rules make assistance free for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility. Request it at least 24 hours ahead, or 36 where a country requires it, from the operator or ticket seller. Asking 36 hours ahead is the safe choice.
- Delays: this route is well over 150 km, so EU rules apply. A delay of 60–119 minutes at your destination earns 25% of the ticket price, and two hours or more earns 50%. A planned closure is already in the timetable when you book, so compensation is measured against the arrival time on your ticket. Claim in writing, with a screenshot of the departure board. Mistakes to avoid
- Booking a weekend trip blind. Check the date against the closure calendar above, then read the journey details for a bus leg or reroute.
- Comparing one hour of flying with three hours of train. Add both airport transfers and the time at the airport.
- Bringing a bike on VR. It won’t be carried.
- Waiting for local trains at the long-distance platforms. In Stockholm, commuter trains use Stockholm City.
