Trains are still the easiest way to cross Sweden with children, but the reason has changed. The playroom carriages are gone. What’s left is cheap and often free child fares, if you book the right class with the right operator.

When you need this

You’re booking a family train trip in Sweden and comparing operators. Maybe an older guide promised a family car with a play corner and you can’t find it in the booking flow. You may be wondering whether a toddler can sit on your lap, or how a night train works with two children. Or your twelve-year-old wants to take the train to their cousins alone.

Is there a family car or play area?

Not one you can book or count on. Sweden used to lead here. SJ, the state-owned operator, rebuilt 38 carriages into family cars with playrooms in 1990–92. In 2013 it announced 20 new family cars with a children’s corner shaped like a double-decker train, starting on Östersund–Stockholm. By 2014 bistro cars with a play corner ran to Oslo, to Östersund and on some days to Falun and Mora.

None of this appears on SJ’s pages today. In October 2026 we checked SJ’s page for traveling with children, its family offer, its child discount, all six customer-service answers about children, its train types and its night-train page. Not one mentions a family car, play corner or playroom. Nor do the pages of VR, Snälltåget, Norrtåg, Mälartåg or Öresundståg.

The photos of children climbing in a train playroom are mostly from Norway. SJ’s Norwegian arm runs reservable family carriages with a playroom at no extra cost on its northern long-distance trains. Vy, in Norway, has a family car with a free playroom on the Bergen Line, though not on every departure. If your trip continues to Norway, book those. Inside Sweden, plan on your own entertainment.

SJ still runs older locomotive-hauled trains as InterCity, Regional and night services, the kind that once carried the play cars. Whether any of them still has a play corner isn’t stated anywhere official. You can’t book one, so don’t plan around it.

What children pay

There’s no national child fare. Each operator writes its own terms, and SJ’s own page warns that other companies’ rules may differ. That’s good news for families, because some operators carry children free.

OperatorChildrenCatch
Norrtåg (the north)Two under 16 free when booked with an adultMost generous rule in Sweden
Mälartåg (around Lake Mälaren)Two aged 6 or under free on each ticketExtra children pay the youth fare
Västtrafik and Skånetrafiken trainsChildren 0–6 freeSkåne needs no ticket at all for them
Arlanda ExpressEveryone under 18 free with a paying adult—
SJDiscounted; deepest with the family offerFamily offer only in ordinary 2nd class
VR SnabbtågDiscounted for 2–15 on Fix and FlexNot combined with campaigns
SnälltågetFamily offer for two under 16Only at the Sittplats price level; infants need a ticket
Interrail passAges 4–11 free with an adult pass holderUnder-4s need no pass

On SJ, the family offer is the one to book. An adult, pensioner, student or youth aged 16–25 can take two children aged 0–15 at a much lower price in 2nd class. Further children get SJ’s ordinary child discount. Children can also buy SJ’s last-minute tickets, released 24 hours before departure.

The trap is class. In SJ 1st class the family offer doesn’t apply, and the child pays the adult price. In 2 klass Lugn (2 class Calm), SJ’s quiet class, a child needs an adult ticket too. For quiet-zone rules in full, see quiet carriages on Swedish trains.

Babies and lap travel

On SJ and VR a child under two travels free sitting on an adult’s lap, without a seat of its own. On SJ the lap baby doesn’t count as one of the two family-offer children. Free lap travel works in 1st and ordinary 2nd class, but not in 2 class Calm.

VR asks that children from two to fifteen have their own seat, for safety and comfort. Its staff may ask you to prove a child’s age, so carry something that shows it.

Snälltåget is the exception. Every child needs a ticket there, infants included. The only exception is a child under seven sharing a berth in a private compartment (egen kupé) on the night train. For baby logistics beyond the train, see Sweden with a baby or toddler.

Strollers, changing tables and food on board

Strollers ride free, but on SJ they ride folded. Fold the stroller before boarding and put it in the carriage’s luggage space. SJ’s train hosts can’t help you lift it. Öresundståg has marked spots where a stroller with a child rides braked, space permitting, clear of the exits. Mälartåg puts prams in its Flex coach. Every network’s rules are in strollers on Swedish public transport.

Choose seats on the seat map. On SJ’s high-speed X 2000 and SJ 3000 trains you pick your seats when booking. Sit near the luggage space and the toilet. The seat map can be switched off for departures with major track works, so book early if seats together matter.

Changing tables (skötbord) are in every carriage on SJ 3000 and every carriage except the bistro on X 2000. On other SJ trains they’re in the accessible toilets. X 2000 carriage 7 has a larger accessible toilet with extra room.

Food depends on the train:

  • On SJ high-speed trains you can pre-order one of two children’s dishes until 10:00 the day before. Each comes with a fruit drink and a box of organic raisins, and you collect it from the bistro.
  • SJ warms jarred baby food in the bistro on trains with catering.
  • SJ Regional has no catering, and only selected InterCity trains do. Pack snacks.

Entertainment is your job. SJ suggests cards, paper and pens, and a small puzzle with the pieces in a bag. Ask the train host about Spejs, SJ’s family mascot, for train bingo and a quiz. For small children, SJ suggests watching the episode of SVT’s Bolibompa in which the dragon takes the train for the first time.

Night trains with children

A night train turns a long day into a sleep, and SJ runs the trains north to Jämtland, Umeå, Luleå and Narvik. Children up to six can share an adult’s berth, and two small children can share one berth. Older children get a reduced berth price under the family offer in 2nd-class couchettes and sleepers.

From age 10, a child may only travel in a compartment for the same sex unless you book the whole compartment. A family with a ten-year-old and a parent of the other sex should book the compartment. SJ itself calls its couchette compartments perfect for families. Details of the Lapland route are in night trains to Swedish Lapland.

Children traveling alone

SJ and Mälartåg don’t let children aged six or under travel alone. For older children it’s the parents’ call. SJ says an unaccompanied child must cope with the whole journey, including a disruption. VR takes no responsibility for children alone but asks for a responsible adult’s contact details at booking.

FAQ

Do Swedish trains have a family carriage or play area?

Not today, as far as any operator says. SJ ran family cars with playrooms from the 1990s and play corners in bistro cars in the 2010s, but its current family pages list none, and no other Swedish operator advertises one. The train playrooms pictured online are Norwegian: SJ’s northern Norway trains and Vy’s Bergen Line. Plan your own entertainment.

Do children travel free on Swedish trains?

Sometimes. Norrtåg carries two children under 16 free with an adult, Mälartåg two children aged six or under per ticket, Västtrafik and Skånetrafiken children up to six, and Arlanda Express everyone under 18. SJ, VR and Snälltåget charge a discounted child fare instead; SJ’s family offer is the deepest discount, in ordinary 2nd class only.

Does a baby need a train ticket in Sweden?

On SJ and VR, no: a child under two travels free sitting on an adult’s lap, without a seat of its own. On SJ that does not apply in 2 class Calm, where the child needs an adult ticket. Snälltåget is the exception: every child needs a ticket, infants included, except when sharing a berth in a private compartment.

Can I take a stroller on Swedish trains?

Yes, free. On SJ you must fold it before boarding and put it in the carriage’s luggage space, and staff cannot help lift it. Öresundståg has marked stroller spots where an unfolded stroller rides braked, space permitting, and Mälartåg puts prams in its Flex coach. Book SJ seats near the luggage space using the seat map.

Are Swedish night trains good for families?

Yes, if you book the right space. On SJ night trains children up to six can share an adult’s berth, two small children can share one berth, and older children get half price in 2nd-class couchettes or sleepers under the family offer. From age 10 a child may only use a same-sex shared compartment, so book the whole compartment.

Can children travel alone on Swedish trains?

From age seven, at the parents’ judgment. SJ and Mälartåg do not let children aged six or under travel alone, and SJ says an unaccompanied child must be able to manage the whole journey, including a disruption. VR takes no responsibility for children alone, but asks for a responsible adult’s contact details at booking and keeps an eye on them.

What can children eat on Swedish trains?

On SJ high-speed trains you can pre-order one of two children’s dishes until 10:00 the day before and collect it from the bistro; staff will warm jarred baby food on trains with catering. SJ Regional has no catering and only some InterCity trains do, so pack snacks for regional and smaller operators’ trains.
