Swedish buses, trams and metro trains are built for strollers, and nobody charges for the stroller itself. What changes from region to region is whether you, the parent pushing it, need a ticket. Here is the rule for each operator, taken from their current terms.

Who pays: the rule operator by operator
There is no national rule. Each regional transport authority writes its own terms of travel, and no Swedish statute regulates strollers on public transport. The pattern is nearly the same everywhere: the stroller and a child under 7 ride free, space permitting, and the adult pays as usual. Stockholm’s buses are the exception.

Other regions publish their own terms. The pattern above is the norm we found, but check the regional operator’s resevillkor (terms of travel) before you rely on it.
Stockholm: the free-parent rule and where it stopped
The rule most visitors have heard of dates from 1981. A parent could board an SL bus through the back door with a stroller and ride free, so they would not have to leave the child to show a ticket at the front. It still exists, but only on SL buses whose ticket readers are at the front doors alone. There, one adult traveling with a child in a stroller rides free.
On the inner-city lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, SL has fitted ticket readers at every door. The reason for the exemption disappeared, and so did the exemption: anyone with a stroller, rollator or wheelchair on those lines needs a ticket. The free-adult rule also does not apply where you pass a ticket gate into a bus terminal.
Warning: “Parents with prams ride free” is a Stockholm bus rule, not a Swedish one, and since lines 1–6 got readers at every door it is not even true of all Stockholm buses. Assume it elsewhere and an inspector can charge you a tilläggsavgift (surcharge).
The exception is written for buses. On the metro, commuter trains, trams and SL’s boats, the adult pays as usual. The stroller is always free, and children under 7 ride free in any number with a paying traveler.
Gothenburg, Skåne, Uppsala and Östergötland
Västtrafik (Gothenburg and Västra Götaland) lets you take a child in a stroller free of charge, space permitting. Brake the stroller and use the straps where they are fitted. Nothing in the terms makes the adult free. On the buses, press the blue stroller button (barnvagnsknapp) before your stop and the driver lowers the bus.
Skånetrafiken sets capacity rather than a free-adult rule. Green city buses take up to four strollers; yellow regional buses and SkåneExpressen take two. On trains, head for the middle carriage. Newer regional buses have fold-out child seats for children of about 1–4 years (max 18 kg), two per bus, first come, first served.
UL (Uppsala county) carries strollers free, space permitting. Its bus doors vary from 90 to 120 cm, so twin strollers are not guaranteed to fit.
Östgötatrafiken (Östergötland) carries strollers free on buses, trains and trams, with no guaranteed space. Two details differ from the others: free travel for under-7s is capped at two children per paying adult, and a stroller used to carry anything other than children needs a youth ticket.
Watch the card tap. Tapping a bank card buys an adult ticket. On Västtrafik one card pays for one traveler; on Skånetrafiken’s city buses and on Östgötatrafiken no discounts apply to a tap. Children under 7 need no ticket, so tap only for the adults. Older children’s fares are covered in children’s fares and the card-tap trap.
Trains, the airport and boats
SJ trains need a folded stroller. Fold it well before boarding; it travels as luggage in the luggage space, never by the doors or emergency exits. A wheelchair space may not be booked to hold a stroller, and train staff cannot help you lift or fold it. When you book, ask for a seat in the family car or near the exit. A carrycot or car-seat pram may need to be separated before it folds.
Arlanda Express is the step-free airport link. Trains and platforms are level, and lifts connect the platforms directly with the terminals. Children under 18 ride free with a paying adult, so a family pays only for the adults. Waxholmsbolaget’s archipelago boats carry a stroller free when you have a child under 7 with you; a stroller without a small child is charged as goods. In summer the boats fill up, so board early. More in Stockholm archipelago ferries.
Lifts, space and taxis
Lifts. Most Stockholm metro entrances have lifts, all SL buses are low-floor and kneel, and metro and commuter-train floors are level with the platform. SL publishes lift closures as disruption notices, so check the station in the SL app or on sl.se before a step-free trip. If you travel with a disability, SL’s accessibility line (020-120 20 22, open around the clock) helps you continue your trip when a lift is out of service.
Space. A stroller never guarantees a place, and no operator lets you reserve one. If the stroller area is full, Västtrafik tells you to wait for the next departure, and staff have no duty to help you on or off. Strollers may not block other passengers or emergency exits. In winter, snow and ice make kerbs and ramps harder and lifts matter more; in summer, holiday crowds fill stroller areas on boats and tourist bus lines.
Taxis. Say you have a stroller when you book, so the car has boot space. A child under three may ride without a child restraint only on an occasional short taxi trip, never in the front seat. Taxi Stockholm, for example, has built-in boosters for over-4s and bookable rear-facing seats from 9 months, but no infant carriers, so bring your own. Mistakes to avoid
- Tapping for the child. Under-7s ride free on every network here; pay for the adults only.
- Boarding an SL line 1–6 bus through the back without a ticket. Readers are at every door there, so tap as you board.
- Wheeling an unfolded pram onto an SJ train. Fold it on the platform.
- Assuming a lift works. Check SL’s traffic information for closures first.
- Parking the stroller in the doorway. Use the stroller area by the middle doors, brakes on.
A light buggy that folds one-handed is the least friction on trains, boats and in taxis; a big pram works fine on city buses and the metro.
