June gives you summer’s longest days without July’s crowds. What it doesn’t reliably give you is a cheaper hotel. Here are the weather by region, the three dates that shape the month, and what official price data actually shows.
When you need this
You’re choosing between June and July, or your dates are already fixed and you want to know what June brings. Maybe your trip touches 6 June or the last full week of the month. Or you’re weighing a June city break against a June cabin week. For the whole summer, including July and August, see Sweden in summer.
June weather by region
June is mild rather than hot. SMHI, the national weather agency, gives a normal June mean (1991–2020) of 15.7 °C in Stockholm, about three degrees below July. Daytime highs average around 21 °C in Stockholm and Skåne. Go north and both numbers fall quickly.
| Region | June mean | Average daily high | Light |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skåne (Lund) | 15.8 °C | 20.6 °C | About 17 hours of daylight |
| Gothenburg | 15.7 °C | 20.0 °C | Short, light nights |
| Stockholm | 15.7 °C | 20.8 °C | Short, light nights |
| Gotland (Visby) | 14.5 °C | 18.9 °C | Short, light nights |
| Umeå | 12.9 °C | 17.9 °C | Never fully dark |
| Kiruna | 9.9 °C | 14.5 °C | Midnight sun all month |
| Abisko | 8.8 °C | 13.5 °C | Midnight sun |
Hot days happen, but less often than in July. On the normal, Stockholm gets about five June days of 25 °C or more and about eleven in July. Pack a layer for the evenings, and more than one if you’re heading north. See what to pack for a Swedish summer.
Light nights and the midnight sun
North of the Arctic Circle, at about 66.5° N, the sun doesn’t set in June. In Kiruna the midnight sun runs from 29 May to 14 July in the almanac year SMHI quotes, and the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) lists Abisko at about 25 May to 17 July. It’s clearest around the solstice, about 21 June.
Stockholm doesn’t get the midnight sun. From about the Dalälven river northwards, though, June nights never get fully dark: twilight runs straight into dawn. Even the far south has about 17 hours of daylight at midsummer. So pack a sleep mask. 1177, Sweden’s health service, recommends a dark blind or a mask in the light summer months. The midnight sun in Sweden covers where to watch it and how to get north.
Three dates that shape June
June’s calendar does more to your trip than its weather.
| Date | What happens | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 6 June | National Day (nationaldagen), a public holiday | Offices and banks shut, shops on holiday hours, celebrations at Skansen |
| About 9–11 June (2027) | Schools break up (sommarlov begins) | Families start travelling |
| Friday 19–25 June (25 June in 2027) | Midsummer Eve (midsommarafton) | The year’s deepest closure |
6 June is a light holiday, not a shutdown. A Stockholm shopping centre opened 11:00–17:00 on 6 June 2026, for example. The royal family attends the national ceremony at Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum, a tradition there since 1893. In 2027 the day falls on a Sunday, and Sweden doesn’t give a substitute weekday off. Visitors from Germany or the Netherlands should note that Whit Monday hasn’t been a Swedish holiday since 2005, when 6 June replaced it. More in Sweden’s National Day.
School end is set by each school provider. The only rule is that the school year ends in June. For 2027 the spring term ends on 9 June in Umeå, 10 June in Gothenburg and 11 June in Stockholm. Around the same time, upper-secondary graduates celebrate studenten (graduation day) by riding decorated trucks through town. Helsingborg closed its centre to cars from 14:00 to 17:00 on 5 June 2026. See studenten and school holidays by municipality.
Midsummer Eve isn’t a public holiday in law. Midsummer Day, the Saturday between 20 and 26 June, is. Even so, the Eve is the day Sweden closes. Systembolaget, the state alcohol retailer, shuts on the Eve, Midsummer Day and the Sunday after, so buy by Wednesday. Public transport runs a Saturday service on the Eve. Tourist attractions stay open, and supermarkets usually open on short hours. To join in, Skansen runs a three-day celebration included in its day ticket, and Gothenburg’s in Slottsskogen park was free in 2026. See Midsummer in Sweden and where to celebrate Midsummer.
Is June cheaper than July?
For leisure accommodation, yes. For hotels, not reliably. We read Statistics Sweden’s consumer price index (CPI) for the last four summers, and the two kinds of accommodation move in different directions.
| CPI group | June vs July, 2023–2026 |
|---|---|
| Cabin villages, campsites and hostels | July higher every year; up 18% from June to July in 2026 |
| Hotels | June higher in 2023, 2025 and 2026 (1.5% in 2026); lower in 2024 |
That’s why “June is shoulder season, so it’s cheaper” is only half true. A cabin week or a campsite pitch usually costs less before the July rush. A city hotel can cost the same or more in June, so compare both months before you book. The CPI tracks price changes nationally, not the rate at any particular hotel. Island ferries are a third case: Gotland ferry fares are demand-based and peak on summer weekends, so Midsummer weekend is one to book early. See the Gotland ferry and where to book a Swedish cabin.
Crowds: June versus July
The difference is large. Statistics Sweden counted about 331,000 people on holiday for a whole week in June 2026, against about 2.1 million in July. Swedish law gives employees the right to four consecutive weeks of leave in June to August, and most take it in July. Tillväxtverket, the agency behind Sweden’s accommodation statistics, confirms July as the peak month for both Swedish and foreign guest nights in 2025.
So the first half of June, before schools break up, is the quietest stretch of the Swedish summer. Things fill up from Midsummer onwards. One older survey, from 2017, found 12% of Swedes took their leave in Midsummer week. Why July fills up is explained in industrisemester.
Outdoors in June: huts, rivers, mosquitoes, fire
- Mountains: STF’s mountain huts open from Midsummer. Snowmelt still raises rivers fast in early June, and Kiruna’s meteorological summer normally arrives only around 16 June. For hut-to-hut hiking, start in late June.
- Mosquitoes: the season starts in mid-June in forest, bog and mountain birch forest. Coasts and the windy open fell stay milder. See mosquitoes in Sweden.
- Fire: forest fires usually happen in May to July. Fire bans are set locally and shown on Krisinformation.se’s national map, and breaking one is punishable by fines. See fire bans in Sweden.
- Water: the Swedish Lifesaving Society recorded eight drownings in June 2026, two of them on Midsummer Eve. Don’t mix alcohol and swimming. See water safety.

FAQ
Is June a good time to visit Sweden?
Yes, for most trips. June has the longest days of the year, the midnight sun in Lapland, Midsummer and fewer crowds than July: SCB counted about 331,000 people on whole-week holiday in June 2026 against 2.1 million in July. The trade-offs are cooler weather than July, mountain huts that open only at Midsummer, and the Midsummer Eve shutdown.
How warm is Sweden in June?
Mild rather than hot. SMHI’s 1991–2020 normals give a June mean of 15.7 °C in Stockholm and 15.8 °C in Lund, with average daily highs around 21 °C. Kiruna in Lapland averages 9.9 °C, with highs around 14.5 °C. Stockholm normally gets about five June days of 25 °C or more, against about eleven in July.
Is Sweden cheaper in June than in July?
For cabins, campsites and hostels, yes: SCB’s price index for them rose in July every summer from 2023 to 2026, by 18% in 2026. Hotels are different. The national hotel price index was higher in June than in July in three of those four years, so July can be the cheaper month for a city hotel. Compare both months before booking.
When is Midsummer in Sweden in 2027?
Midsummer Eve is Friday 25 June 2027 and Midsummer Day Saturday 26 June, following the rule that Midsummer Day is the Saturday between 20 and 26 June. The Eve is not a public holiday, but it is the day Sweden closes: shops and offices shut, Systembolaget is closed and transport runs a Saturday timetable.
Is everything closed on 6 June in Sweden?
No. National Day is a public holiday, so offices and banks close and many shops run shorter holiday hours, but it is nothing like the Midsummer shutdown. Expect flags, local celebrations and the royal ceremony at Skansen in Stockholm. In 2027 the day falls on a Sunday, and there is no substitute weekday off.
When do Swedish schools break up for summer?
In the second week of June. Each school provider sets its own dates within the rule that the school year ends in June; for 2027 the spring term ends on 9 June in Umeå, 10 June in Gothenburg and 11 June in Stockholm. Family travel picks up from then, and the following weeks lead into the July holiday peak.
Can you see the midnight sun in June?
Yes, north of the Arctic Circle, about 66.5° N. Kiruna has it from 29 May to 14 July in the almanac year SMHI quotes, and it is clearest around the solstice, about 21 June. Stockholm does not get it, but from about the Dalälven river northwards June nights never get fully dark.
