Those screaming teenagers in white caps on the back of a truck are not a riot. They have just finished school, and riding through town is a legal, regulated part of the day. Here is what you are seeing, and how it affects your afternoon.
When you need this
You are in a Swedish town in late May or June and a truck full of singing teenagers crawls past, horn blaring. Your hotel mentions that the center closes to cars one afternoon. You walk past a school where a crowd holds up placards with baby photos. Or a Swedish family has invited you to a studentmottagning, and you want to get it right.
What studenten is
Studenten is what Swedes call the end of gymnasiet, the three-year upper secondary school usually finished at 18 or 19. The name is a leftover. Until 1968 school ended with a real studentexamen, written and oral exams watched by an external examiner. Parliament decided to abolish it in 1964, and the last cohort sat it in 1968. The party survived the exam, and Swedes still say someone “took the student”.
The white studentmössa (student cap) is older still:
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1845 | Uppsala students create the cap as a common symbol for a Nordic student meeting in Copenhagen |
| 1862 | The exam moves to the schools, and the cap becomes the mark of having passed it |
| 1964 | Parliament decides to abolish the exam |
| 1968 | Last exam under the old system; after that year’s student revolt the cap goes out of fashion |
| 1980s | The mood swings and the cap becomes popular again |
Today’s caps carry gold embroidery with the graduate’s name, class and school.
The day, step by step
The details vary from school to school, but the shape is broadly the same everywhere:
- Cap day. Weeks before graduation, classes put on their caps for the first time (mösspåtagning). The school decides when.
- The ceremony. On the day itself, graduates attend a program at school. In Täby, outside Stockholm, the Åva school’s 2026 run-out began at 11:30.
- The utspring. Graduates run out of the building together, singing, dancing and shouting, into a crowd of relatives. Classes often go out one at a time; Täby lets a class competition decide the order.
- The signs. Families wait holding placards with an enlarged photo of the graduate as a small child, often with name, class and year. It helps the graduate find them in the crowd.
- The truck. Many classes climb onto a studentflak, a decorated truck or tractor trailer with birch branches and balloons, and ride slowly through town.
- The reception. Each graduate goes home to a studentmottagning, an open house for family and friends.
Listen for the songs. Graduates sing Studentsången, written in 1851, whose opening words Swedes still argue over, and the rowdier “Vi har tagit studenten” (“We have taken the student”) to the tune of For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.
Local twists are part of the fun. In Helsingborg, graduates run down the monumental Terrasstrapporna steps from 15:00, and the city builds a queuing system to limit crowding. Isof, the state folklore institute, also notes that more graduates now carry other countries’ flags to show where their families come from.
The truck rules
Riding on the back of a truck is normally illegal in Sweden: passengers must travel in a place meant for passengers. The student truck is a regulated exception. Since 1 January 2023, Transportstyrelsen’s regulation TSFS 2022:99 has allowed passengers on a flatbed or trailer for short, temporary transports linked to graduations, carnivals and similar events, on these conditions:
| Rule | Requirement | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | 20 km/h maximum | law |
| Roads | Only where the limit is 70 km/h or lower | law |
| Passengers | Only as many, placed so, that no danger can arise | law |
| Railings | Sturdy, high enough to stop falls; at least 110 cm advised | law; height is guidance |
| Seats | Benches fixed; no sharp edges or protruding parts | law |
| Contact | Passengers can reach the driver directly; police say keep a phone call open | law; phone detail is guidance |
| Driver | At least 21, licence held for two years (tractor: B licence, two years) | law |
| Trailer | One only, securely coupled, stable | law |
| Police | Told the route and time in advance | law |
Police ask the organizer to send the start and end point, date and time, vehicle type, registration number, number of participants, the responsible person’s phone number and the school. Passengers keep arms and legs inside the railings, throw nothing, and board or leave only when the truck has stopped. A normal class truck needs no permit, but a larger procession organized to draw a public audience can count as a public event that does.
Often the school is not the organizer at all. Täby’s school told families in 2026 that the truck ride and the champagne breakfast are arranged by the students, not by the school.
Alcohol on graduation day
Police call alcohol and student trucks “a risky combination”. Their advice: graduates under 20 may not drink or carry anything stronger than folköl, light beer up to 3.5%, and some places ban alcohol on the trucks entirely.
For visitors, the law that bites is langning. Giving, lending or buying alcohol for anyone under 20 is a crime, with a penalty from a fine to two years in prison, and that includes a relative pouring champagne for their own 19-year-old graduate. Schools also act on the day: Täby’s school checked bags at the door, confiscated alcohol and warned that visibly drunk graduates would be turned away from their own ceremony.
Drinking on the street is a local question. Municipalities ban drinking in mapped zones, often the center, so a toast on the pavement may be fine in one town and a fine in the next. Our guide to drinking in public in Sweden explains how to check.
Traffic and closed streets
This is where studenten reaches visitors who never see a cap. In 2026:
- Helsingborg closed its center between Hälsovägen and Kungstorget to all cars except buses and student trucks from 14:00 to 17:00 on Friday 5 June.
- Uppsala expected up to 100 trucks and tractors through the center on the same day, with several streets closed. Police said traffic disruption was certain and told drivers to take the bus, cycle or leave early.
- Täby sent its trucks on a fixed loop through the center and banned relatives from parking at the school.
There is no single national date. The law only says the school year must end by June at the latest, and each school’s owner, the municipality or a private operator, picks the day. Check the municipality’s or the school’s website in late May for times, routes and closures, and leave the car behind; in Helsingborg the buses kept running through the closed center.
If you are invited to a studentmottagning
A studentmottagning is an open-house reception at the graduate’s home after the school day and the truck ride. Expect mingling, a buffet, cake, drinks and speeches by family and friends, in a home decorated with balloons and garlands in blue and yellow. If it rains, the party moves into a tent in the garden.
A small present for the graduate is customary. Check the invitation for the time, and do not offer the graduate alcohol if they are under 20.

FAQ
What is studenten in Sweden?
It is the celebration of finishing gymnasiet, Swedish upper secondary school, usually at 18 or 19. The name comes from the old studentexamen, abolished in 1968, but the party survived. Graduates wear white caps, run out of school to waiting families, often ride a decorated truck through town and end the day at a reception at home.
When is studenten in Sweden?
In late May or June. The law says the school year must end by June, and each school’s owner picks its own day, so there is no single national date. In 2026 Uppsala, Helsingborg and Täby all graduated on Friday 5 June. Check the school’s or municipality’s website in late May for times and closed streets.
Is it legal to ride on a truck in Sweden for studenten?
Yes, under conditions. Riding on a flatbed is normally banned, but a regulation in force since 1 January 2023 allows short graduation and carnival transports. The truck may go no faster than 20 km/h, only on roads limited to 70 km/h, with railings Transportstyrelsen advises are at least 110 cm high, and a driver aged 21 or over.
Why do Swedish graduates hold signs with baby photos?
The signs belong to the family, not the graduate. Relatives wait in the school yard holding a placard with an enlarged photo of the graduate as a small child, often with their name, class, year and a short congratulation, so the graduate can find them in the crowd after running out. It is a custom, not a rule.
What is an utspring?
It is the moment graduates run out of the school building together after the final ceremony, singing, dancing and shouting, straight into a crowd of relatives. The custom dates from the old exam, when students who had passed put on their caps and ran out. Schools set the times and often the order of classes.
Can graduates drink alcohol on the truck?
Police call alcohol and student trucks a risky combination. Graduates under 20 may not drink or carry anything stronger than folköl, light beer, and some towns ban alcohol on the trucks entirely. Giving alcohol to anyone under 20 is the crime of langning, even for a parent. Local rules may also ban drinking in town centers.
What should I bring to a studentmottagning?
A small present for the graduate is customary. A studentmottagning is an open-house reception at the graduate’s home, with mingling, a buffet, cake, drinks and speeches by family and friends. Homes are often decorated with balloons and garlands in blue and yellow. The reception often follows straight on from the school day and the truck ride, so check the invitation for the time.
