Ställplatser are what most Swedish motorhome trips run on. They are cheap or free, often in the middle of town or on a harbour. Here’s what one is, how to pay as a visitor, how to find a good one, and what the neighbours expect.

What a ställplats is (and isn’t)
A ställplats (plural ställplatser) is a place set aside for motorhomes to stay a short time, usually one or a few nights. It’s Sweden’s version of the German Stellplatz or the French aire de camping-car.
No Swedish statute defines it. A ställplats can be a marked corner of a town car park, a harbour quay, a farm field, a marina or a row of spaces outside a campsite gate. When operators build one, the municipality gives planning permission for either a car park or a campsite, depending on the site’s character and size. Municipalities don’t all make that call the same way. In September 2026 Visita, the hospitality industry body, asked the government for a national definition and clearer rules on responsibility, supervision and fire safety.
What matters for you: allemansrätten, the right of public access, does not cover motorhomes. A ställplats is the purpose-built answer to “where can the vehicle sleep?”

The 24-hour rule applies on municipal streets in built-up areas and on public roads. Weekdays before a Sunday or public holiday don’t count. On a ställplats, the operator’s terms decide instead. Overnight parking rules outside stopovers are covered in overnight RV parking in Sweden.
The signs to look for
Sweden’s Road Signs Ordinance has three service signs for overnight stays with a vehicle:

The sign tells you what kind of facility it is. It doesn’t set the fee or the maximum stay. Those are on the operator’s own sign at the entrance.
Facilities: what to expect
Facilities range from bare parking to almost everything. Most sites give you:
- Level parking, often in marked spaces
- Fresh water and waste disposal on site or within walking distance, often round the clock
- Electricity at many, usually as an extra
Some add toilets and showers. Few have a reception, kitchen or play area. For those, go to a campsite. Waste and water mechanics, including what a rest-area point will and won’t take, are in motorhome service stations.
How to pay without Swish
Most ställplatser are unstaffed. The most common way to pay is a payment machine on site. One region’s stopovers show the full range:
- Online booking, sometimes required a day ahead
- A QR code on a sign, paid by phone
- An envelope (kuvert) dropped in a box
- Card or Swish at a nearby café or shop
- Free, with an optional donation
Swish won’t work for you. It needs a Swedish bank account and BankID, which visitors can’t get. When Swish is the only option listed, look for a card, app, QR or envelope alternative before you commit to the site. See Swish for tourists.
Keep a receipt or a screenshot. Unstaffed sites check later. On private land, an unpaid night can bring a private control fee on the operator’s signed terms.
Finding ställplatser: apps and their limits
Most travelers combine two or three sources:

We don’t recommend a specific app. Use one crowd-sourced app plus one Swedish source, and check the dates on recent reviews. Sites close, change owner and change their rules between seasons.
A “free spot” in an app is not a ställplats. Crowd-sourced apps list places that users found, not places anyone set aside. You may be on private land or under a local övernattning förbjuden (overnight stay prohibited) ban. Why that matters is in motorhome wild camping in Sweden.
Etiquette: parking, not camping
The unwritten rule on a Swedish ställplats is that you are parked, not camping. In practice that means:
- Stay on your wheels and inside your space.
- No awning, tables, chairs or grill spread out. Some rural or campsite-run sites allow more. The site’s sign decides.
- Keep generator and engine noise down in the evening and early morning.
- Stay for the transit nights the site is meant for, and check the posted maximum stay. For longer, book a campsite.
These are conventions, not national law. They’re also what municipalities cite when they tighten rules.
The 4 m rule
Fire services recommend at least 4 m in every direction between caravans or motorhomes, measured including awnings, and 3 m between tents. A fire in one vehicle can otherwise spread to the next.
The figure began in 1978 as a comfort distance in a campsite planning handbook and was later accepted as a fire-safety distance. It’s a recommendation, not a national statute. Operators, though, are bound by the Civil Protection Act (lagen om skydd mot olyckor) to manage spacing, extinguishers, gas and guest information. Don’t squeeze in “just one more van”.
Seasons and regions
- April or May to September: the season for most ställplatser.
- July: Swedish holiday peak. Arrive by mid-afternoon at harbour and coastal sites, or book where booking is offered.
- October to April: many sites close or shut off water to prevent freezing. Year-round sites are the minority, mainly in towns and harbours.
- South, west coast and big lakes: the densest network and the most booking requirements.
- Towns: municipal stopovers often sit in or beside a public car park, whose signs still apply.
- Norrland and the mountains: fewer sites and long gaps. Plan water and disposal stops rather than trusting the next stopover.
