Renting a motorhome in Sweden is renting a car with a house attached: the same law, the same insurance split, and a longer handover. What decides the trip is your licence, the vehicle’s weight, and what the contract makes you pay for on return.

When you need this

  • You’re comparing motorhome or campervan rentals for a Swedish trip.
  • You want to know whether your licence covers the vehicle in the listing.
  • You’re choosing between a rental company and a private owner on a platform.
  • You’re planning an autumn, winter or early-spring rental.
  • You’re at the handover, or about to return the vehicle and want the deposit back.

Your licence decides the vehicle

A company renting out cars for under a year needs a permit from Transportstyrelsen. A motorhome registered as a car (personbil klass II) counts as a car, and the company may not hand it to a driver who can’t show a licence for it.

Swedish law draws the line at the maximum authorised mass (totalvikt) printed on the registration document:

Maximum authorised massLicence you need
Up to 3,500 kgB (ordinary car licence)
Over 3,500 kg, up to 7,500 kgAt least C1
Up to 4,250 kg on a B licenceNot in force in Sweden

An EEA licence is valid in Sweden according to the categories printed on it, so read your own card before you pick a vehicle. Some older EEA licences carry C1 from earlier national rules; if it’s printed, it counts.

The 4,250 kg rule isn’t here yet

The new EU driving-licence directive (2025/2205) lets B holders drive motorhomes up to 4,250 kg, but only after special training or a test. Sweden hasn’t decided what that training looks like, and Transportstyrelsen says most of the directive applies from 26 November 2029. Some websites already present 4,250 kg as current. If you rent a 4-tonne motorhome on a B licence today, you’re driving without a valid licence.

Age and driver rules

The law’s floor is 18: a foreign licence doesn’t let anyone younger drive a car in Sweden. Companies set their own rules on top, and motorhome contracts often set them high. A minimum age of 25 and several years of licence is a common condition, and some contracts charge a higher excess for young drivers.

Name every driver on the contract. Konsumentverket, the Swedish consumer agency, notes that insurance often covers only the main driver.

Insurance and the excess

Every Swedish motorhome carries trafikförsäkring, the compulsory traffic insurance. It pays for injuries and for damage to other people’s property. It doesn’t pay for the motorhome itself.

Who pays for whatHow it works
Injuries, other people’s propertyTrafikförsäkring, included by law
Damage to the motorhomeThe contract’s damage cover, minus the excess (självrisk) per damage
A claim on the traffic insuranceSome contracts charge a separate trafiksjälvrisk
Damage from negligenceCan be charged to you in full

Before you buy an excess reduction at the desk, check whether your card or home insurance already covers a rental vehicle. There’s no statutory right to cancel a vehicle rental in Sweden; cancellation follows the contract.

Company or private owner

Private owners rent out motorhomes through platforms, and that changes the insurance picture. According to Konsumenternas, the Swedish insurance advice service, traffic insurance applies whoever drives, but the owner’s comprehensive cover normally doesn’t apply during a rental. Rentals arranged through a platform often include comprehensive cover for the rental period.

So with a private owner, get it in writing: which policy covers damage to the vehicle while you have it, and what the excess is. Without that, damage to the motorhome may fall entirely on you.

Weight and seats: the rules rental pages skip

A 3,500 kg motorhome has little margin once people, water and luggage are aboard. The Road Traffic Ordinance says the maximum authorised mass may not be exceeded while driving. The driver can be fined, and the owner, or a holder who decides who drives, can be fined too. Over 10 % above the limit, police or vehicle inspectors must have the vehicle unloaded before it goes on.

Seats matter as much as beds. A vehicle may carry no more passengers than it is registered for, each in a place intended for passengers. A six-berth motorhome with four belted seats is a four-person vehicle on the road, and nobody rides in the bed while driving.

Speed follows registration, not weight. A car-registered motorhome has no special limit and follows the posted limits; towing a trailer caps it at 80 km/h. The rare truck-registered motorhome is capped at 80, or 90 on motorways.

Summer van or winter van

From October to April, ask two questions: is the vehicle winter-rated, and may you use the water in frost? The European standard EN 1646-1 grades motorhomes; the top grade, vinterbonad, is tested by cooling the vehicle to −15 °C and heating it to +20 °C within four hours with the water system working. A summer-grade vehicle left with water in its pipes can freeze them, and that damage can be charged to you.

Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 31 March in winter road conditions. That’s the rental company’s duty as owner, and a motorhome over 3,500 kg needs at least 5 mm of tread.

What’s included

Contracts differ, so ask for the list in writing. The pattern across Swedish rental terms:

ItemCommon pattern
Kitchen equipmentUsually included
Bedding and towelsOften an extra, booked in advance
GasOften one Swedish bottle or normal use included
Final cleaningOften an extra; emptying the toilet is usually your job
MileageSome contracts include an allowance and charge per extra kilometre
Pets and smokingOften banned, sometimes allowed in a specific vehicle
Border crossingsOnly with written permission

The Swedish gas bottle is a quiet advantage of renting locally. Foreign exchange bottles don’t fit Swedish exchange schemes, which is a real headache for visitors who bring their own motorhome. For ferry crossings, operators require gas valves closed and cap the number and weight of cylinders.

Do a proper handover

A motorhome handover takes longer than a car’s, and it’s where you protect your deposit.

  1. Walk round the outside with staff and get every mark into the damage record (skadeprotokoll), with a copy for you.
  2. Test every system: gas, heating, fridge, water pump, toilet, awning and leisure battery.
  3. Check the tyres and, in winter, their type.
  4. Photograph the gauges, the fuel level and the empty toilet cassette.
  5. Ask how it must come back: fuel, tanks, toilet, cleaning.

Spend the first evening at a campsite if you can, where water and power are at hand while you learn the systems. Allemansrätten, the right of public access, doesn’t cover the vehicle, so plan nights at ställplatser (motorhome stopovers), campsites or legal parking.

Returning it

Contracts typically require the toilet cassette emptied and cleaned and the grey and fresh water tanks emptied, and many set a fixed charge, taken from the deposit, if they aren’t. Empty only at a disposal point at a campsite, ställplats or service station, never in nature. Refuel as agreed, photograph everything again, and keep the return record until the deposit is back.

FAQ

Can I rent a motorhome in Sweden with a normal car licence?

Yes, if the motorhome’s maximum authorised mass is 3,500 kg or less, the figure on the registration document. Above that you need at least C1. The EU rule allowing B holders up to 4,250 kg after training or a test is not in force in Sweden; most of the new directive applies from 26 November 2029. The rental company must check your licence before handing over the vehicle.

How old do you have to be to rent a motorhome in Sweden?

The legal floor is 18: a foreign licence does not let anyone younger drive a car in Sweden. Rental companies set their own, higher limits, and motorhome contracts commonly require the renter to be at least 25 with several years of licence. Check the terms before booking, and name every driver on the contract.

What insurance is included when renting a motorhome?

Every motorhome carries trafikförsäkring, which covers injuries and other people’s property. Damage to the motorhome itself falls under the contract’s damage cover, leaving you to pay an excess per damage, and some contracts add a traffic-insurance excess. When renting from a private owner, the owner’s comprehensive cover normally does not apply, so confirm the platform or special insurance in writing.

What is usually included in a motorhome rental?

It varies by contract. Kitchen equipment is commonly included; bedding, towels and final cleaning are often extras. Many rentals include one Swedish gas bottle or normal gas use, which avoids the foreign-bottle problem. Some contracts include a mileage allowance and charge per extra kilometre, and many ban pets and smoking. Ask for the full list in writing before you pay.

Can I rent a motorhome in Sweden in winter?

Some companies rent year-round. Ask whether the vehicle is winter-rated to EN 1646-1 grade III (vinterbonad), which is tested to heat from minus 15 °C, and whether water may be used in frost. From 1 December to 31 March the company must fit winter tyres in winter conditions, with 5 mm tread on motorhomes over 3,500 kg.

What should I check when I pick up a rental motorhome?

Walk round the outside and get every mark into the damage record with a copy for you. Then test the gas, heating, fridge, water pump, toilet, awning and leisure battery, and check the tyres and the fuel and water gauges. Ask how the toilet and tanks must be returned. Photograph everything, including the gauges.

Do I have to empty the toilet before returning a rental motorhome?

Usually yes. Contracts typically require the toilet cassette emptied and cleaned and the grey and fresh water tanks emptied, and many set a fixed charge, deducted from the deposit, if they are not. Empty only at a disposal point at a campsite, ställplats or service station, never in nature, and keep a photo of the clean cassette.
