Grilling in public is part of Swedish summer, and the country builds for it. What catches visitors out isn’t finding a grill. It’s that the rules change at every town boundary, and a fire ban hits each kind of grill differently.
When you need this
You’ve bought charcoal or a disposable grill and want to use it in a park or on a beach. You’re at a fixed grill and wonder whether it’s open today. A fire ban has just been announced and you still want to cook. Or you’d like a beer with the sausages and aren’t sure the park allows it.
What a Swedish grill place is
A grillplats is a fixed, non-combustible grill or fire ring on a gravel pad. The municipality or landowner puts it there for anyone to use. Gothenburg says many bathing places and some parks and nature areas have one. Malmö marks its beach grill places as meant for “either the city’s fixed grills or your own grill”.
The facility is shared, but the fuel isn’t. Lund’s page tells visitors to bring their own firewood or charcoal and firelighters. The municipal pages we checked mention no fee. Stockholm, Malmö and Lund publish maps or lists of their grill places, so search the town’s name plus grillplatser.
Local rules differ by town
There’s no national rule for grilling in a park. Under the Public Order Act, each municipality writes its own lokala ordningsföreskrifter (local order regulations), and several use them for grilling. Malmö says outright that its ordinance governs how you may grill on public places. Four towns show how far apart the rules can be:
| Municipality | Parks and town | Beaches |
|---|---|---|
| Malmö | Never directly on the ground in built-up areas | Three named beaches: fixed grill places only, 09:00–17:00; own grill anywhere 17:00–09:00 |
| Vellinge | Brought grill on legs or a stand, never on the ground | No grilling at bathing places 10:00–16:00, 1 June–31 August; all fires on the beaches banned |
| Lund | Only prepared grill places in parks and near built-up areas | — |
| Gothenburg | Grilling away from fixed places allowed if the ground isn’t damaged | Fixed grill places at many bathing places |
These are examples, not the national pattern. The one habit that works everywhere is to read the town’s grilling page and the sign at the site. A small grill with legs or a stand satisfies the “not on the ground” rules in both Malmö and Vellinge.
Disposable grills
The engångsgrill (disposable grill) is the weak point. Storstockholms brandförsvar, the Stockholm region’s rescue service, says disposable grills start many ground fires and must always stand on a non-combustible surface. Gothenburg warns they get very hot underneath.
- Never on grass, moss or a wooden picnic table. Sand, gravel or the top of a fixed grill place are the safe choices.
- Vellinge requires one to stand off the ground on a stand at its beaches.
- During a fire ban the rules tighten, as described below.
Shops pull them too. In 2019, the grocery trade association’s members agreed to stop selling disposable grills in areas where a fire ban on public land is in force.
Grilling during a fire ban
The fire-ban system sits on top of all the local rules, and the grill place is where its two tiers split. The full law is in our guides to campfire rules and fire bans. Here’s what it means for grilling:
| Grill type | Ordinary ban (eldningsförbud) | Stringent ban (skärpt eldningsförbud) |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed public grill place | Usually open: built so fire can’t spread | Closed |
| Disposable grill | Only on top of a fixed grill place; Malmö bans them outright | Banned |
| Your own charcoal grill in nature | Banned on the ground; Malmö allows one with legs | Banned, even with legs |
| Gas grill or camping stove | Outside the ban | Allowed if placed safely |
Under an ordinary ban, the national model text still allows grilling at prepared places built so ignition and spread are unlikely. That is why the fixed grill place is the one that usually survives. A stringent ban closes it. Posters at a site can be missing or out of date, so check the national fire-ban map for the municipality you’re in. Gas is covered in camping stoves during fire bans.
Whatever the town allows, the person who lights the grill is responsible for its safety, and breaching a ban can bring a fine.
National parks and nature reserves
Protected areas run on their own binding regulations, all year, not on the town’s rules.
- Tyresta National Park bans fire “including using a grill” except at designated places. Camping stoves are allowed. The fire places next to the main entrance are wheelchair-accessible, with accessible toilets and parking.
- Skuleskogen National Park allows fires only at marked fire places from 1 May to 30 September.
- Under a fire ban, no fire may be lit anywhere in a national park.
Bring your own fuel. Firewood in nature means fallen, dead wood only, never branches from a living tree. The county board in Västernorrland warns that wood supplied at cabins and fire places can run out by late autumn or winter. More on both parks in day hikes near Stockholm and the High Coast Trail.
Cleaning up
Charcoal stays hot long after the food is done, and a bin fire is the classic end to a park barbecue.
- Drown the coals with plenty of water. Malmö says to soak a disposable grill thoroughly.
- Check they’re cold. Coal you can hold in your fingers is cold enough to bin, says the Stockholm rescue service. If not, wrap it in foil and leave it outside overnight.
- Or wait. Vellinge advises waiting 24 hours before putting a used disposable grill in the bin.
- Leave the place tidy. Bin your rubbish or take it home.
Leaving a grill behind is littering, which is illegal under the Environmental Code. Minor littering carries a police on-the-spot fine (ordningsbot).
A drink with the barbecue
Alcohol at a grill place is legal unless that park or beach is in the municipality’s no-alcohol zone. Parks and bathing places are among the most commonly mapped zones. Stockholm’s ban, for example, covers the parks and bathing places marked on its maps. Search the town’s name plus alkoholförbud, and read the signs at the entrance. FAQ
Are there public BBQ grills in Swedish parks?
Yes. Many bathing places and some parks and nature areas have fixed grill places, or grillplatser: a non-combustible grill or fire ring set on gravel, open to anyone. The municipality provides the grill but not the fuel, so bring your own charcoal or wood and something to light it. Larger cities, such as Stockholm and Malmö, publish maps or lists of them.
Can I use a disposable grill in a Swedish park or on a beach?
Often, but not on grass, moss or a wooden table, because they get very hot underneath. Stand one on sand, gravel or a fixed grill place. Local rules can be stricter: Malmö bans grilling directly on the ground in built-up areas, and Vellinge requires a grill on legs or a stand at its beaches. During a fire ban, rules tighten further.
Can I grill during a fire ban in Sweden?
Under an ordinary ban, usually at fixed grill places, which are built so a fire cannot spread. A disposable grill may only be used on top of one, and some towns, such as Malmö, ban disposables completely during a ban. Under a stringent ban, fixed grill places are closed too. A gas grill or camping stove generally stays allowed.
Can I barbecue on the beach in Sweden?
It depends on the municipality. Malmö allows grilling on its three main beaches only at fixed grill places between 09:00 and 17:00, and with your own grill outside those hours. Vellinge bans grilling at bathing places from 10:00 to 16:00 between June and August, and never directly on the sand. Check the town’s page or the signs before lighting up.
Can I have a barbecue in a Swedish national park?
Only where the park allows it. Tyresta National Park bans fire, including grills, except at designated places, though camping stoves are fine. Skuleskogen allows fires only at marked fire places from May to September. During a fire ban, no fire may be lit anywhere in a national park. Read the park’s regulations before you go.
How do I get rid of a disposable grill or charcoal safely?
Put the coals out with plenty of water and make sure they are cold before you throw anything away. Vellinge advises waiting 24 hours before putting a used disposable grill in the bin. Stockholm’s rescue service says coal you can hold in your fingers is cold enough. Leaving the grill behind counts as littering.
Can I drink alcohol at a public grill place?
Usually yes, unless the park or beach sits in the municipality’s no-alcohol zone. Parks and bathing places are among the most commonly mapped zones, and Stockholm’s ban covers parks and bathing places marked on its maps. Search the town’s name plus alkoholförbud to find the map, and read the signs at the entrance.
