Karlstad and Lake Vanern

Karlstad is the city where the river Klarälven runs into Lake Vänern, within three hours of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Oslo by train. This page gets you there and around, tells you what is open and what it costs, and points you to the in-depth fishing, boating and canal guides.

When you need this

You are breaking a trip between Stockholm, Gothenburg and Oslo, or planning a few days by the lake. You want to know whether the summer boat buses run when you travel, what the museums cost, whether you can fish without a license, and how to reach the islands without a boat of your own.

The city at a glance

Karlstads kommun had 99,007 residents on 31 December 2025, 923 more than a year earlier. It was one of only two municipalities in Värmland County to grow that year. The regional tourist board calls Karlstad solstaden, “the sun city”. The name goes back to Sola, an innkeeper nicknamed for her sunny temper, whose statue is now the city’s symbol.

Getting there and around

By train: the municipality says Karlstad is at most three hours by rail from Stockholm, Gothenburg and Oslo, with both regional and national trains. There is also an airport, Karlstad Airport. Local transport is Värmlandstrafik, the county’s public transport. Karlstad’s old city-bus brand, Karlstadsbuss, has merged into it. Three things to know:

• It is cashless on buses and on its trains run by Vy.
• On board a bus, buy a single ticket from the driver with a bank card.
• The app takes Swish, a bank card verified with BankID, or Klarna. Activate the ticket before boarding and scan its QR code at the reader by the driver, not the rear one. Trains have no scanner, so you show the ticket to the staff.

If you have no Swedish BankID or Swish, paying by card on board is the simplest route.

The boat buses

The båtbuss (boat bus) is ordinary public transport on water: eight lines on Klarälven and in Vänern’s archipelago, serving Karlstad, Hammarö and Kristinehamn. The Karlstad and Hammarö lines all start from Inre hamn, the inner harbor. In 2026, the 19th season, it ran 8 June–30 August, with variations by line. The weekday morning line 93 to Lövnäs ran until 25 September and takes bikes.

Have a road fallback for the return leg on a windy day.

Värmlands Museum and Sandgrund Lars Lerin

Värmlands Museum stands on the Sandgrund point in the center and shows 15–20 new exhibitions a year. It is open every day of the year: Monday–Friday 10:00–18:00, to 20:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays, and 11:00–16:00 on weekends and public holidays. It closes at 14:00 on Midsummer Eve, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

It is not free for adults, whatever older guides say. Adults pay 120 kr and pensioners 100 kr. Entry is free for everyone up to age 20 and for students with a valid card. An annual card (360 kr adult, 500 kr family) also covers four other sites of the museum, including Långbans gruvby and Torsby Finnskogscentrum. A gently sloped ramp and automatic doors lead in, lifts reach every exhibition, and wheelchairs can be borrowed. You may photograph for private use unless an exhibition says otherwise. Food stays out of the galleries, and packed lunches go in a room on the entrance level.

Sandgrund Lars Lerin, next door, is the permanent art hall of the watercolorist Lars Lerin, born in Munkfors in 1954. It occupies a rebuilt former restaurant that was a dance palace in the 1970s, and was the first of his three art halls. December 2024 headlines about it “closing” concerned a renovation after New Year 2025. It is open all year, Tuesday–Sunday 11:00–16:00, and closed on Mondays, New Year’s Day, 1 May, Midsummer Eve and Christmas Eve. Tickets are sold only at the door: 120 kr for adults, free for children under 11 with a paying adult.

A walk through the center

The municipality’s Solapromenaden is a signed walk of about 10 km that you can take in either direction, with QR quiz signs along the way. It links:

• Sola i Kallsta, Herman Reijers’s 1985 statue of the innkeeper Eva-Lisa Holtz;
• Karlstads teater, the riverside theatre from 1893 and home of Wermland Opera;
• Östra bron, locally Gamla Stenbron: at 168 m, Sweden’s longest stone arch bridge;
• Sandgrund Lars Lerin and Värmlands Museum.

Lake Vänern

Vänern is Sweden’s largest lake and Europe’s third largest. SMHI gives a mean area of 5,450 km², a maximum depth of 106 m, a mean depth of 27 m, a length of 150 km and a width of 81 km. The two larger lakes are in Russia, so Vänern is the largest in the EU. Its water leaves through Göta älv and Nordre älv to the sea.

The archipelago has about 22,000 islands, islets and skerries. The lake is shared between Värmland and Västra Götaland counties, and its joint tourism site counts 13 municipalities and three provinces around it.

Right at Karlstad, the Klarälven delta is Sweden’s largest active delta below the mountain range, built up over 3,600 years and still growing. Its outer part, between Karlstad and Skoghall, is a Natura 2000 area. The river-mouth island Kaplansholmen is a nature reserve.

A few pointers beyond Karlstad:

• Kristinehamn is on the boat-bus network.
• Sjötorp, on the lake’s eastern side, is where the Göta Canal begins.
• No road ferry of Trafikverket’s 40 routes crosses Vänern. Värmland’s only route is Högsäterleden over the river Byälven; see road ferries.

Own boat? Sjöfartsverket published a new small-boat chart series (båtsportkort) for Vänern in 2026. Fishing and swimming

Fishing: Vänern is one of the waters where anyone, foreign visitors included, may fish free with hand tackle such as a rod. The limits:

Swimming: check a beach’s water quality on HaV’s Badplatsen, since municipalities sample the official bathing waters. Algal blooms come mainly in high summer and autumn. Djurö National Park

Djurö, a national park since 1991, is about 30 islands and skerries in the middle of Vänern. There is no scheduled boat: you come by your own boat or a taxi boat. Malbergs hamn is the main entrance, with toilets, bins and fireplaces there and at three other landing points. The crossing is very weather-dependent, especially in late autumn, winter and early spring. The park’s regulations:

• Camp at most two nights in a row in one place, and not on or near Lyckan, the open area on the main island.
• Stay out of the bird-protection areas from 1 April to 31 July.
• Light fires only at marked fireplaces; grills and camping stoves are fine.
• Keep dogs on a leash.
• Motorboats: at most 7 knots within 100 m of shore.

Mistakes to avoid

• Expecting free entry at Värmlands Museum as an adult.
• Trying to pay cash on a bus or train.
• Counting on a boat bus before June or after August.
• Visiting Sandgrund Lars Lerin on a Monday.
• Trolling from a rented boat near shore without a permit, or keeping a wild salmon or trout.
• Heading for Djurö without your own boat or a booked taxi boat.

How do I get to Karlstad?

By train is simplest: the municipality says Karlstad is at most three hours by rail from Stockholm, Gothenburg and Oslo, with both regional and national trains. Karlstad also has its own airport, Karlstad Airport. Once there, buses and regional trains are Värmlandstrafik, which is cashless, so carry a bank card.

Can I pay cash on buses in Karlstad?

Is Värmlands Museum free?

Only for some visitors. Entry is free for everyone up to age 20 and for students with a valid student card; adults pay 120 kronor and pensioners 100 kronor. The museum is open every day of the year, with late opening to 20:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays, and all exhibitions can be reached by lift.

Is Sandgrund Lars Lerin still open?

Yes. Lars Lerin’s permanent art hall in Karlstad is open all year, Tuesday to Sunday 11:00–16:00, closed on Mondays and four holidays. Headlines in December 2024 about a closure concerned a temporary renovation. Tickets are sold only at the door: 120 kronor for adults, free for children under 11 with a paying adult.

Crayfish need the rights-holder’s permission, trolling near shore is not covered, and only fin-clipped farmed salmon and trout of at least 60 centimeters may be kept, three a day. Rivers need a local permit.

How do I get to Djurö National Park?

Only by your own boat or a taxi boat; there is no scheduled service. The park is about 30 islands in the middle of Vänern, with its main landing at Malbergs hamn. The crossing is very weather-dependent, especially outside summer, and bird-protection areas are closed from 1 April to 31 July.
