Halland is the long, flat, sandy stretch you drive past on the E6 between Denmark and Gothenburg. Every beach town is a few minutes off the motorway, but the beach rules change at each municipal border.
When you need this
- You’re driving the E6 from Helsingborg or Denmark to Gothenburg and want a beach stop
- You’re choosing a base for a summer beach holiday on the west coast
- You remember driving onto the beach at Mellbystrand and want to know if you still can
- You’re travelling with a dog in summer
- You’re arriving in Varberg by train and the station isn’t where you remember it
What Halland is, and how to reach it
Halland is a county (län) of six municipalities: Laholm, Halmstad, Falkenberg, Varberg and Kungsbacka on the coast, and Hylte inland. Halmstad is the county seat. Sweden’s geological survey puts the country’s flat sandy beaches mainly in Skåne, Halland, Gotland and Öland, and Halland is the one on the way to Gothenburg. North of the city the coast turns to granite: that’s Bohuslän.
By car, Helsingborg to Gothenburg is 216 km on the E6, about two and a half hours of pure driving by our measurement. By train, Öresundståg, the regional train between Gothenburg and Copenhagen, stops in Laholm, Halmstad, Falkenberg, Varberg and Kungsbacka; our Öresundståg guide covers tickets. SJ’s fast Gothenburg–Malmö trains also run through Varberg. By bike, Kattegattleden, national cycle route 1, follows the whole coast, and one bike per traveller rides free on Öresundståg within Sweden if there’s room.
The coast from south to north
| Town | Beach or sight | Drive from the previous stop |
|---|---|---|
| Laholm | Mellbystrand–Skummeslöv, about 12 km of sand | Helsingborg 57 km |
| Halmstad | Tylösand, 8 km west of town, part of a sand beach of just over 4 km | Mellbystrand 29 km; town to beach 10 km |
| Falkenberg | Skrea strand, about 2 km of shallow sand with high dunes | Halmstad 45 km |
| Varberg | Fortress, Kallbadhuset, 28 municipal beaches | Falkenberg 36 km |
| Kungsbacka | Tjolöholm castle on Kungsbackafjorden | Varberg 50 km; Gothenburg 29 km |
Laholm’s beach runs from Mellbystrand to Skummeslöv. Its bathing season is 1 May to 15 September, and there’s an accessible jetty with a ramp and bathing platform at Skummeslöv. Park in the car parks along the coast — there are eight accessible spaces at Stora Strandvägen.
Tylösand is Halmstad’s flagship beach, with dunes, accessible toilets and lifeguards covering about 10 km of beach from mid-June to mid-August. HaV classes its water as excellent. Skrea strand in Falkenberg is shallow, with a dog-bath zone at its far southern end, and its water is also classed excellent.
Tjolöholm, near Kungsbacka, is a Tudor-style castle built 1898–1904 by architect Lars Israel Wahlman on a peninsula in Kungsbackafjorden, and a listed building since 1991. A foundation with Kungsbacka municipality as principal runs it; the grounds are open year-round and the castle has guided tours. Take exit 58 off the E6, or bus 732 from Kungsbacka and walk about 3.5 km.
Varberg: fortress, cold-bath house and a new station
Varbergs fästning (Varberg Fortress) sits on a hill in town. Count Jacob Nielsen began building a stronghold there in 1287; in the 1800s it became a prison, used until 1930. Statens fastighetsverk, the state property agency, manages it. Inside, the Halland Museum of Cultural History shows the Bocksten Man, found in a bog east of Varberg in 1936, and runs daily guided fortress tours in high summer.
Kallbadhuset, the cold-bath house on piles in the sea below, was first built in 1866 and rebuilt with onion domes after a storm destroyed it in 1902. It’s a nakenbad (nude bath) with separate sides for women and men, each with a sauna. Our cold-bath guide explains the etiquette.
The station has moved. Since 14 July 2025, trains have run through a new tunnel under Varberg: a 2.8 km rock tunnel plus 300 m of concrete tunnel, part of 9 km of new double track to Hamra. The new station has sunken platforms about 150 m north of the old one, and the project removed nine level crossings in town. Guides written before mid-2025 still show the old surface station.
Beach rules: cars, dogs and camping
Cars are off the sand at Mellbystrand
Older guides still describe parking on the sand at Mellbystrand and Skummeslöv. That ended in 2024. The county board stopped vehicle traffic from 31 May 2024, and an appeal court refused to hear the case. Laholm now says the beach counts legally as terräng (terrain), so driving there needs a county-board permit. Sweden’s off-road driving law bans motor vehicles on bare ground outside farming and forestry, with a fine for breaking it.
Dogs: a different rule in every town
| Municipality | Summer rule on bathing beaches | Where dogs can go |
|---|---|---|
| Laholm | Dogs only 18:00–08:00, 1 May–15 September, always leashed | Kattvägen: dogs may swim around the clock |
| Halmstad | No dogs on official bathing places, 1 May–15 September (Tylösand included) | Beaches that aren’t official bathing places, all year |
| Falkenberg | Dogs only in marked hundbadzon (dog-bath zone), leashed, 15 May–15 September | Zones at Skrea strand, Ugglarp, Olofsbo and Rosendal |
| Varberg | No dogs on municipal bathing places, 1 May–31 August | Getteröns tredje vik, the official dog beach; leashed dogs may use the promenades |
| Kungsbacka | No general ban; no dogs on jetties and rafts at the larger bathing places | Most beaches, with consideration |
Guide, service and signal dogs are exempt in Halmstad and Falkenberg. Everywhere in Sweden, dogs must be kept from running loose where there’s game from 1 March to 20 August — more in dogs in nature.
Camping and motorhomes
Falkenberg bans camping on public places, beaches included, and bans overnight stays in motorhomes and caravans along its beaches and near coastal housing from 15 May to 15 September. Varberg doesn’t allow camping on or next to beaches. A night in a tent under allemansrätten (the right of public access) is still possible away from houses and farmland, but the dune and pine reserves around Laholm Bay restrict it. For a bed, see Swedish campsites and wild camping.
How warm is the water?
Cooler than the sand suggests. HaV, the marine and water agency, publishes per-beach averages from Copernicus satellite data:
| Beach | June | July | August |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tylösand (2022–2026 average) | about 17 °C | about 19 °C | about 18 °C |
| Skrea strand (summer average) | under 18 °C across the season |
HaV’s bathing-water service gives a free daily temperature forecast for each sea beach. The 2026 EU bathing season HaV lists for Tylösand and Skrea ran from 21 June to 20 August. The sudden cold-water drops called upwelling are least pronounced on the west coast of all Sweden’s coasts.
No Halland beach has a Blue Flag. Blå Flagg Sverige lists eight Swedish beaches, none here; Halland’s three Blue Flag sites are Varberg harbours — the inner harbour, Getterön Marina and Båtfjorden. HaV’s water classification is the better guide, and Tylösand and Skrea strand both rate excellent. More in Swedish beaches.
Safety on the beach
- Currents: Varberg warns that Kåsa and Apelviken can have treacherous currents in wind.
- Lifeguards: Tylösand has them mid-June to mid-August. Laholm has strandvärdar (beach hosts) in weeks 26–32 — not lifeguards.
- Jellyfish: red lion’s mane turns up on the west coast mostly in summer and autumn. Rinse a sting with seawater, never tap water.
- Algal blooms can appear in summer — see algal blooms — and the general rules are in water safety.

FAQ
Can you still drive on the beach at Mellbystrand?
No. Driving on the Mellbystrand and Skummeslöv beaches in Laholm was stopped from 31 May 2024, and an appeal court refused to hear the case. Laholm says the beach counts legally as terrain since 1 June 2024, so driving there needs a permit from the county board, and off-road driving is punishable by a fine. Park in the coastal car parks instead.
Can I take my dog to the beach in Halland?
Out of season, generally yes; in summer it depends on the municipality. Laholm allows leashed dogs only 18:00–08:00 from 1 May to 15 September. Halmstad bans dogs from official bathing places 1 May–15 September, Falkenberg keeps them to marked dog-bath zones 15 May–15 September, and Varberg bans them 1 May–31 August. Kungsbacka has no general ban.
How warm is the sea in Halland in summer?
Cooler than many visitors expect. HaV’s figures for Tylösand from 2022 to 2026 average about 17 °C in June, 19 °C in July and 18 °C in August, and Skrea strand averaged under 18 °C over the summer. HaV’s bathing-water service gives a free daily temperature forecast for each sea beach, based on Copernicus satellite data.
Are there Blue Flag beaches in Halland?
No. Blå Flagg Sverige’s current list has eight Swedish beaches, mostly in Skåne, and none in Halland. Halland’s three Blue Flag sites are harbours in Varberg: the inner harbour, Getterön Marina and Båtfjorden. A missing flag says nothing bad about the water: Tylösand and Skrea strand are both classed excellent by HaV.
How do I get to Varberg and the Halland beaches by train?
Take Öresundståg, the regional train between Gothenburg and Copenhagen, which stops in Kungsbacka, Varberg, Falkenberg, Halmstad and Laholm. One bike per traveller rides free within Sweden if there is room. Varberg’s trains have used a new underground station, about 150 metres north of the old one, since 14 July 2025.
Is Varberg’s Kallbadhuset a nude bath?
Yes. Kallbadhuset, the cold-bath house on piles in the sea at Varberg, is a nude bath divided into two sides, one for women and one for men, each with a sauna. The first bath house was built in 1866, and the present one with onion domes dates from after a storm destroyed its predecessor in 1902.
Can I camp or sleep in my motorhome by the beach?
Usually not on the beach itself. Falkenberg bans camping on public places including its beaches, and bans overnight stays in motorhomes and caravans along the beaches from 15 May to 15 September. Varberg does not allow camping on or next to beaches. A night in a tent under allemansrätten is still possible away from houses and outside restricted reserves.
