Sweden has nearly 450 golf clubs and a record number of golfers. Getting onto a course as a visitor is simple once you know the one rule that matters: bring proof of your handicap.
When you need this
You’re packing clubs for a Swedish summer and wondering whether a club will let you on. Or you’ve never played and want to try. Maybe you’ve moved here and want a Swedish handicap, or you’re planning a Lapland trip around teeing off at midnight. It also covers the walker’s question: can I cross that golf course?
Sweden is a big golf country. The Swedish Golf Federation (Svenska Golfförbundet, SGF) recorded 548,856 golfers in 2025, the third record year in a row for active memberships, and about 9.5 million booked rounds. Golf here is organized by that federation, not the state, and the rules below are federation and club rules.
The green card and your foreign handicap
Swedes earn their first handicap through the Grönt Kort (green card). SGF made the rules binding on every member club in 2019 and revised them on 6 May 2025. To pass, a new golfer must:
| Step | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Knowledge test | At least 80% on each part: golf and golf etiquette (golfvett), 25 + 25 questions from age 13 |
| Playing test | Nine holes, at least 18 Stableford points on handicap 54.0 |
| Marker (since May 2025) | Must have handicap 36.0 or lower |
| Approval (since May 2025) | Only by the club where the playing test was done |
| Result | Grönt Kort and a handicap of 54.0 or lower |
Children up to 12 take a shorter 15 + 15 question test and have easier playing-test options, such as 45 strokes on a nine-hole short course.
Here is the part visitors get wrong: you do not need a Swedish green card. SGF’s rulebook says a golfer without a Swedish Golf-ID who can show written proof of handicap 54.0 or lower under another national federation’s rules is registered on that handicap and treated as meeting the green-card requirement. Your home federation’s handicap card or app record is your ticket.
The May 2025 changes are recent. If an older guide describes the green-card test differently, this is why.
Club guest rules
Handicap 54 is the national floor, not a guarantee. SGF’s rules let a player with handicap 54 book and enter competitions “if the local club does not have other rules”, and some clubs do have other rules.
| Club type | Typical guest terms | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Members’ club, open terms | Handicap 54 or lower, booked tee time | Green Zone Golf, Haparanda: limit 54 |
| Members’ club, strict terms | Lower limit, guest hours | Ullna Golf & Country Club: 30 for women, 24 for men, guests from 12:00 |
| Pay & Play | No handicap, no membership | Björkliden, Lapland |
So check the club’s website for guest terms before you plan a trip around a particular course. A handicap that works at home can still be too high for a specific club.
Playing without a handicap
Beginners and families have a route in: Pay & Play courses. They ask for no green card, no handicap and no membership. You can book them without a Swedish Golf-ID through a Pay & Play account in SGF’s free Min Golf Bokning app, or with the course directly.
If you live in Sweden and want a real handicap, local clubs run green-card courses. SGF’s online green-card material and Golf-ID registration are free, but registering alone gives no right to play; the playing test must be done at a club. For joining a club as a resident, see our guide to Swedish club life.
Booking a tee time
Swedish golf runs on booked start times (starttider). Don’t just turn up.
- Min Golf Bokning (SGF’s free app) books tee times at clubs across Sweden, takes green fees and handles check-in.
- Without a Swedish Golf-ID, create a Pay & Play account in the app, or contact the club directly by its website, phone or email as a foreign guest.
- Bring proof of handicap to the desk; clubs check guest terms at booking or on arrival.
Midnight golf in Lapland
The famous one is Björkliden, a mountain course 250 km north of the Arctic Circle above Lake Torneträsk. It is Pay & Play, has a short season (the 2025 season ran 6 July to 30 September), and sells a 24-hour green fee. In its first weeks you play under the true midnight sun, which in nearby Kiruna lasts until about 14 July. Clubs and bags can be rented at the resort’s sports shop. Björkliden lies on the Kiruna–Narvik railway, west of Kiruna.
The quirkier one is Green Zone Golf at Haparanda–Tornio, on the Finnish border: 11 holes in Sweden and 7 in Finland, handicap limit 54. The border crosses the sixth hole, and since Finland is an hour ahead (see Sweden’s time zone), a tee shot can technically land an hour later than it was hit. Mind the clock if a booking is in Finnish time.
One honest correction: Haparanda lies just south of the Arctic Circle (about 66.5° N), so the sun does set there. Midsummer nights are still light enough to play round the clock, as the course advertises.
Golf courses and allemansrätten
Sweden’s allemansrätten (right of public access) only partly covers golf courses. Naturvårdsverket, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, says:
| Situation | Allowed? |
|---|---|
| On the course while play is going on | No — not covered by the right |
| On a green | No, especially not during play |
| Elsewhere on the course, outside greens and tees, when no one is playing | Generally yes |
| Skiing or walking over greens in winter | Respect cordons; greens get damaged |
This is official guidance rather than statute. In practice: walk around, not across, and never over a green. See our allemansrätten guide for the wider rules.
Mistakes to avoid
- Taking a Swedish green card you don’t need. A foreign handicap of 54.0 or lower counts.
- Assuming 54 opens every course. Clubs can set lower limits.
- Arriving without a tee time. Book through the app or the club.
- Leaving the handicap proof at home. Without it, you are limited to Pay & Play.
- Cutting across a course during play. Outside allemansrätten, and a golf ball hurts.

FAQ
Do I need a green card to play golf in Sweden?
Not if you already have a handicap. Sweden’s Grönt Kort is how Swedes earn their first handicap, but SGF’s rules say a golfer who can show written proof of handicap 54.0 or lower from another national federation is registered on that handicap and treated as meeting the green-card requirement. Beginners without a handicap can still play Pay & Play courses.
Can I play golf in Sweden without a handicap?
Yes, on Pay & Play courses. They can be booked without a Swedish Golf-ID or club membership, through a Pay & Play account in SGF’s free Min Golf Bokning app or directly with the course. Björkliden’s course in Lapland is one example. Members’ clubs normally want a handicap, so check the club’s guest terms before you go.
What handicap do I need to play in Sweden?
Nationally, 54.0 or lower — the level a Swedish green card gives. Each club can set its own guest limit on top, and some are strict: Ullna Golf & Country Club near Stockholm admits guests up to handicap 30 for women and 24 for men. Check the club’s website before booking a trip around one course.
How do I book a tee time in Sweden?
Swedish golf runs on booked start times. Clubs across Sweden take bookings through SGF’s Min Golf system, and many also by phone or email; the free Min Golf Bokning app also handles green fees and check-in. Without a Swedish Golf-ID you can create a Pay & Play account in the app, or contact the club directly as a foreign guest.
Can you play golf at midnight in Sweden?
Yes, in Lapland. Björkliden’s course, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, opens around early July and sells a 24-hour green fee, so you can play under the midnight sun in its first weeks. At Green Zone Golf in Haparanda the sun does set, but midsummer nights are light enough to play round the clock.
Is there a golf course in two countries?
Yes. Green Zone Golf at Haparanda–Tornio has 11 holes in Sweden and 7 in Finland. The border runs across the sixth hole, and because Finland is an hour ahead, a tee shot can technically land an hour later than it was struck. The course’s handicap limit is 54.
Can I walk across a golf course under allemansrätten?
Only with care. Naturvårdsverket says you may not claim the right of public access on a golf course while play is going on, and especially not on the green. On the rest of the course, outside greens and tees, you may generally be there when no one is playing. In winter, respect cordons around the greens.
