Sweden has no national discount card, and each transport company writes its own rules. Here’s which discounts you can claim with a foreign passport, which ones you can’t, and what an inspector can charge if you get it wrong.

When you need this

You might be under 20, or 16 to 25, or over 65, and wondering whether the cheaper ticket is meant for you too. You might have an ISIC or a student card from your home university. You might be retired but not yet 65, or about to start studying in Sweden. Or an inspector has just asked to see proof for your reduced ticket. This page answers each case from the operators’ own terms.

The pattern: age yes, student card no

No Swedish law gives students or pensioners cheaper travel. Every regional transport authority and every train company sets its own discount groups. For visitors the patchwork follows one simple pattern:

Discount typeWorks on a foreign passport? Why
YouthYes, everywhere checkedOnly proof of age is needed
Senior (age-based)Yes, where an age rule existsA passport proves your age
Senior (retired under 65)NoOnly Swedish pension certificates count
Student, regional transportNoOnly Swedish issuers with a travel symbol
Student, SJ trainsYes, with ISIC, aged 16–25SJ lists ISIC as accepted

The one legal rule in all this is the penalty: the surcharge for traveling without a valid ticket.

Youth fares

This is the best deal for foreign teenagers, because it only needs proof of age. On the three big regional networks the youth fare ends at your 20th birthday:

  • SL (Stockholm): reduced single tickets until you turn 20. A reduced period ticket stays valid if you turn 20 while it runs.
  • Västtrafik (Gothenburg and the West): youth runs from 7 to 19.
  • Skånetrafiken (Malmö and Skåne): the barn/ungdom (child/youth) group runs from 7 until you turn 20 within Skåne. On trips to Denmark it ends at 16.

On SJ, the national train company, the youth band is wider: 16 to 25. If you’re 20 to 25, local transport charges you the adult fare, but SJ still gives you the youth discount. Tick “youth” when you book. Children under 7 ride free on local transport with a paying traveler, and SJ discounts children 0–15. Children aged 6 or younger may not travel alone on SJ.

In Stockholm, one trap applies to everyone: if you tap a bank card at the gate, you pay the adult fare unless you registered that card on sl.se no later than the day before. Our Stockholm public transport guide covers this.

Student fares

This is where most foreign students go wrong. Regional transport accepts only digital student IDs from Swedish issuers that carry a travel symbol (studentresesymbolen):

OperatorAccepted proofExtra conditions
SLStudent ID with the SL symbol from Mecenat, STUK or WeStudents, plus passport or IDAt least 75% study on a course eligible for Swedish student finance
VästtrafikTravel-symbol ID from Hitract, Mecenat, WeStudents or STUK, plus IDStudent price on 30-, 90- and 365-day tickets only
SkånetrafikenTravel-symbol ID in the issuer’s app, plus ID—
SJSTUK, Mecenat or ISIC, plus IDAges 16–25 only

So an ISIC card or a home-university card gets you nothing on SL, Västtrafik or Skånetrafiken. If you’re under 20, buy the youth fare instead. On SJ, ISIC works, but only up to age 25. A 27-year-old student gets no SJ student discount, whatever card they hold. Other train companies set their own offers. VR, for example, advertises a student discount on its Stockholm–Gothenburg trains.

Coming to study in Sweden? The Mecenat card is a digital card in an app. KTH’s student union, for example, says the travel discount needs registration for at least 75% study. Until your card shows the travel symbol, buy the youth or adult fare. SL also counts study per term, so a student ID can lose its travel right between terms.

Senior fares

“Senior” means something different almost everywhere, and “retired” is not the same as “senior”:

  • SL: reduced fares from the day you turn 65. Under 65, only a Swedish pensionärsintyg (pension certificate from Pensionsmyndigheten) qualifies.
  • SJ: a senior discount for everyone who has turned 65, proved with ID. Under 65 you need a Swedish pension certificate or proof of Swedish sickness compensation.
  • Skånetrafiken: the senior group starts at 70, for journeys within Skåne.
  • Kalmar Länstrafik: the senior ticket starts at 67.
  • Västtrafik: no senior fare. The free senior travel you may read about around Gothenburg is a benefit municipalities give their registered older residents. Visitors pay the adult fare.

So a 66-year-old visitor gets the senior price in Stockholm and on SJ, but not in Malmö or Gothenburg. A 62-year-old early retiree from abroad pays the adult fare everywhere.

Museums

Free admission for adults at Sweden’s state museums ended in the 2023 budget. The discount that still works reliably is free entry for young people: Moderna Museet, Livrustkammaren (the Royal Armoury) and the Swedish History Museum are free up to and including 18, and Nationalmuseum for everyone under 20.

Student and pensionär (pensioner) prices vary from museum to museum. Moderna Museet gives a reduced price to pensioners and to students with a Swedish or ISIC card. Livrustkammaren charges retirees and students the regular adult price. Check each museum’s own page, and see free museums in Stockholm for the full list. Some free-hour programmes pause in summer: Moderna Museet’s Free Friday breaks from June to late August.

If an inspector checks you

A reduced ticket proves nothing on its own. Inspectors can ask for ID, and a student ticket also needs the student app. If you can’t prove your right to the discount, you’re treated as having no valid ticket:

  • Skånetrafiken’s conditions say failing to show the documents can lead to the surcharge, and that otherwise you must buy an adult ticket.
  • SL tells staff to treat a passenger who obviously lacks the right to a discount, and can’t prove it, as having no valid ticket.
  • Västtrafik requires you to be able to show the documents for any non-adult ticket.

Swedish law lets these operators charge a tilläggsavgift (surcharge) on top of the fare. The same law bars it when the mistake is excusable, and it names bristande kännedom om lokala förhållanden (unfamiliarity with local conditions) as one excuse. If that fits your case, dispute the surcharge in writing. Buying train tickets in Sweden covers how.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a student ticket on a home-university card or ISIC. On regional transport, buy adult, or youth if you’re under 20.
  • Assuming 65 is the senior age everywhere. Skåne uses 70, Kalmar 67, and Västtrafik has no senior fare.
  • Leaving your passport at the hotel. Every reduced category can be checked.
  • Missing SJ’s youth discount at 20–25 because local transport stops youth at 20.
  • Tapping a bank card in Stockholm without registering it the day before. You pay adult.

FAQ

Can foreign students get student discounts in Sweden?

On SJ trains, yes: SJ accepts ISIC alongside the Swedish Mecenat and STUK cards for travelers aged 16 to 25. On regional transport such as SL, Västtrafik and Skånetrafiken, no: they accept only digital student IDs from Swedish issuers that carry a travel symbol. If you are under 20, buy the youth fare instead; it only needs proof of age.

Does ISIC work on public transport in Stockholm?

No. SL’s own rules say a student fare needs a student ID with the SL symbol from Mecenat, STUK or WeStudents, and the holder must study at least 75% on a course eligible for Swedish student finance. An ISIC card does not meet that test. Travelers under 20 can buy the reduced youth fare on proof of age.

At what age do you get a senior discount in Sweden?

It depends on the operator. SL in Stockholm and SJ on national trains use 65, Skånetrafiken uses 70, and Kalmar county’s senior ticket starts at 67. Västtrafik in Gothenburg has no senior fare; its free senior travel is for registered residents. A passport proving your age is enough wherever the age rule applies.

Up to what age is the youth fare in Sweden?

On regional buses, trams and metros it usually ends at your 20th birthday: SL, Västtrafik and Skånetrafiken all use under 20. SJ’s long-distance trains use a wider band, 16 to 25. Children under seven ride free on local transport with a paying traveler. Carry ID, because inspectors can check age on any reduced ticket.

What happens if I travel on a reduced ticket without proof?

You are treated as having no valid ticket. Inspectors can charge a surcharge, the tilläggsavgift, plus the fare: 1,850 kr on SL and 1,500 kr on Västtrafik and Skånetrafiken when checked. Swedish law bars the surcharge when the mistake is excusable, including unfamiliarity with local conditions, so dispute it in writing if that applies.

Are museums in Sweden free for young people?

At many major museums, yes. Moderna Museet, Livrustkammaren and the Swedish History Museum are free up to and including 18, and Nationalmuseum for everyone under 20. Adults pay since state museums dropped free adult entry in 2023. Student and pensioner prices vary: some museums offer a reduced price, others charge the adult rate.
