Stockholm does Christmas as a six-week season: lights from mid-November, markets and Lucia on the Advent weekends, then a near-total stop on Christmas Eve. Here are the 2026 dates the organisers have actually published, and what is open when the city shuts.

The 2026 season at a glance
The Swedish Christmas peaks on Christmas Eve, 24 December (julafton), not on the 25th. Nordiska museet, Sweden’s museum of cultural history, calls Christmas Eve the main day of celebration. In 2026 it falls on a Thursday, which shapes the whole week.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day are the statutory public holidays; Christmas Eve is not, yet it closes more. Systembolaget, the state alcohol retailer, is closed from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 December. The Christmas lights
The city-centre lights are a joint project called #Stockholmsjul, run since 2011 by the City of Stockholm, the city’s property owners and the business association City i Samverkan. More than 50 streets and squares are decorated. The 2026 opening is Saturday 14 November at 16:00 in Kungsträdgården, and it is free.
Watch the date. Visit Stockholm, and even the project’s own English page, still say 15 November and “over 40 streets”. Those were the 2025 facts. The organiser’s Swedish page gives 14 November and more than 50 streets, and 14 November is a Saturday only in 2026.
The lights are best seen on foot, and the project publishes a free Walk of Lights map. Decorated streets include Drottninggatan, Hamngatan, Kungsgatan, Birger Jarlsgatan, Norrbro, Strömkajen and Kungsträdgården itself. They start coming down in mid-January, and some stay up until mid-February.
Two more city-centre things belong to the same walk:
- Department-store windows. One city-centre department store has dressed its windows with Christmas scenes since 1915, with a new theme every year, according to Visit Stockholm.
- The Kungsträdgården ice rink. The City of Stockholm runs an outdoor artificial-ice rink here from late autumn to March. Skating is free with your own skates, and skates can be hired on site for a fee. The city lists weekday hours of 09:00–20:00 and weekends 10:00–20:00, but no holiday hours. The rink also hosts concerts, choirs and the lights opening.
Markets and Lucia
Skansen, the open-air museum on Djurgården, has held a Christmas market since 1903. In 2026 it runs on 27–29 November and 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20 December, Fridays and Saturdays 10:00–17:00 and Sundays 10:00–16:00. It is inside Skansen, so you enter on an ordinary ticket, and entrances and shops are cashless. With a wheelchair or stroller, use the main entrance lift; the Hazelius Gate is at the foot of a very steep hill. See the Skansen guide.
Stortorget in Gamla stan, the old town, is the classic square market, but it is not confirmed for 2026. Its organiser’s site still shows 2025. On 3 September 2026 the organiser said police demands for vehicle barriers and the cost of its own guards meant it could not hold a market unless the city covers security. Lucia, 13 December, is a Sunday in 2026 and not a public holiday. Skansen has celebrated it since 1893; in 2025 its concerts on 13–14 December were included in the day ticket, with limited places. The big Stockholm Cathedral concerts sold out all seven 2025 performances, and neither venue had 2026 dates when checked. Watch for the ticket release; details in the Lucia guide.
What’s open 24–26 December
This is where Stockholm surprises visitors. On Christmas Eve shops run half days, and Visit Stockholm itself warns that many venues have limited hours around 24–26 December. Museum hours differ sharply on the same day:

The practical plan: put the Vasa Museum and Junibacken before the 24th, use Skansen or ABBA The Museum for Christmas Eve itself, and keep Nationalmuseum for Boxing Day. Skansen is reached on tram line 7 from T-Centralen. The Riksdag runs no guided tours over Christmas and New Year, and Moderna Museet’s free Friday evenings end for the season on 18 December. Eating out on Christmas Eve is possible but limited. Some restaurants and hotels serve a julbord on the 24th, but they are the exception and book early. The Swedish Christmas meal is on the 24th at home, so planning a big dinner out on the 25th misreads the calendar.
Buying alcohol: in 2026 there is none to take home from Wednesday 23 December until Monday 28 December. Buy glögg, wine or snaps by the 23rd.
Getting around over Christmas
SL’s 2026 Christmas timetable was not out when checked. The pattern has held for years: in 2025, and in SL’s own notice for 2022, much of the traffic changed after about 15:00 on Christmas Eve.
- Christmas Eve after 15:00: many lines every 15 or 30 minutes; commuter ferry lines 80, 82 and 89 did not run in the late afternoon and evening in 2025.
- Night of 24–25 December: no metro trains; in 2022 the first train on Christmas morning ran at about 06:00.
- Christmas Day and Boxing Day: weekend and holiday timetables.

Where can I go ice skating in Stockholm at Christmas?
