Skansen: Stockholm's Open-Air Museum

Skansen is historic Swedish buildings, Nordic animals and seasonal festivals on one hilltop, and it is open every day of the year. Most guides still quote child prices that no longer exist. Here is what it costs now, when it opens and how to get up the hill.

When you need this

You are planning a Stockholm day with children, or an off-season day when many sights have shut. You want to know whether Skansen is open on a particular date, what a family visit costs, or how to manage the hills with a wheelchair or stroller. Or you are timing a trip around Midsummer, the Christmas market or Lucia.

What Skansen is

Skansen calls itself Sweden’s, and the world’s, oldest open-air museum. Artur Hazelius founded it in 1891, and today the Skansen Foundation (Stiftelsen Skansen) runs it. Buildings, plants and animals were brought here from all over Sweden to show how people lived and worked in different parts of the country.

The collection grew over decades. The Mora farmstead arrived in 1885, before the museum opened. The Bollnäs cottage followed in 1892, Seglora Church in 1918 and Skogaholm Manor in 1931. Plan on walking between farmsteads, a church and a manor rather than touring a single building.

The animals

Skansen is also a zoo, and its focus is Nordic species. Skansen names these:

Several of these species are in European zoo conservation programs. The European bison died out in the wild in the 1920s and survived thanks to zoos, Skansen among them.

The Baltic Sea Science Center, about life beneath the Baltic, is included in your ticket. The Skansen Aquarium, with monkeys, crocodiles, scorpions, parrots and frogs from around the world, is not. It needs its own ticket.

Opening hours by season

Skansen is open every day of the year, but closing time moves with the season, and in the dark months it closes early. These are Skansen’s published 2026 hours:

The practical warning is the winter weekday: closing at 15:00 means a 14:00 arrival in November gives you one hour. Arrive in the morning.

Tickets

Four rules cover almost every visitor:

• Children aged 0–15 enter free since 7 October 2025. You add a free child ticket when you buy an adult, student or senior ticket.
• Adult prices vary by season and are lowest online. Buying at the gate on the day costs more.
• The gates and shops are cashless. Bring a card or a phone that pays.
• Students and seniors get a discount on showing valid ID.

The day ticket includes the Children’s Zoo and the Baltic Sea Science Center. You can leave and come back the same day; ask for a stamp at the gate. Skansen says an annual pass pays for itself on the second visit.

Skansen’s site shows the current adult price only at checkout. The only official amounts date from October 2025, when it announced free child entry; they are in the Practical information table below as a guide, not today’s price.

Getting there

Skansen is on Djurgården, the island of museums and parkland east of the center. The address is Djurgårdsslätten 49.

Your SL ticket works on the ferry. Every SL ticket is valid on line 82; tap before boarding. During the Slussen construction works the ferry leaves from a temporary pier on Skeppsbron, so older maps may show the wrong spot. More in our Stockholm public transport guide.

Drivers: in 2026, cars were restricted at Djurgårdsbron on weekends and public holidays, 10:00–17:00, from 30 April to 27 September. Disabled parking is near the Solliden entrance.

Accessibility

Skansen describes its own terrain as hilly, with steep slopes, cobbled stretches and long distances between attractions. Which entrance you use matters more than anything else.

• Use the main entrance (Djurgårdsslätten 49). A platform lift takes wheelchairs, mobility scooters and strollers from street level up to the Spegeldammen pond.
• Avoid the Hazelius Gate with wheels. It sits at the bottom of a very steep hill.
• The funicular (Bergbanan) is paid for anyone over 4, and wheelchair users with a companion ride free. But Skansen does not recommend it for wheelchairs or mobility scooters, because of how an emergency evacuation would work. It runs daily at Easter, at weekends in April, then daily.
• Wheelchairs can be borrowed at the main entrance against a deposit, first come, first served. Strollers can be hired there.
• Assistants enter free with an official assistant’s card when they accompany a paying visitor.
• Accessible toilets are at the main entrance, the Hazelius Gate, behind Högloftet, in Skogens hus and at Lill-Skansen. All toilets have changing tables.
• No pets. Only certified assistance dogs are admitted.

For packed lunches, Skogens hus is an indoor space with microwaves where you can eat your own food. Everything else is outdoors, and events go ahead in any weather.

Midsummer, Christmas and Lucia

The big seasonal events take place inside Skansen, on the ordinary ticket.

• Midsummer. In 2026 the celebration ran for three days, 19–21 June, with Skansen open 10:00–22:00 on Midsummer Eve. The 2027 programme is not out yet. See Midsummer in Sweden.
• Christmas market. Skansen has held one since 1903, selling handicrafts, candles and sweets. In 2026 it runs 27–29 November and 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20 December. It is inside Skansen, so you enter on an ordinary ticket. See also Christmas markets in Sweden.
• Lucia. Skansen has celebrated Lucia since 1893. In 2025 the concerts ran on 13–14 December in Seglora Church and the 1920s-style temperance hall. They were included in the day ticket, but seats were limited. The 2026 dates are not published yet. See Lucia in Sweden.

Mistakes to avoid

• Paying at the gate when the online price is lower.
• Buying a child ticket. Children aged 0–15 are free; just add their free ticket.
• Expecting the Aquarium to be included in the day ticket.
• Arriving mid-afternoon in winter. Weekdays close at 15:00.
• Entering at the Hazelius Gate with a wheelchair or stroller.
• Buying a separate ferry ticket. Your SL ticket covers line 82.
• Bringing a dog. Only certified assistance dogs are admitted.

FAQ

How much does a Skansen ticket cost?

Adult prices vary by season and are lowest online; buying at the gate costs more. When Skansen announced free child entry in October 2025, an adult day ticket was 240 kronor in low season and 305 kronor in high season, and an adult annual pass 445 kronor. Is Skansen free for children?

Yes. Since 7 October 2025, children aged 0–15 get free admission. You add a complimentary child ticket when buying an adult, student or senior ticket. The day ticket includes the Children’s Zoo (Lill-Skansen) and the Baltic Sea Science Center; the funicular (from age 4) and the separate Aquarium still cost extra.

What are Skansen’s opening hours?

Skansen is open every day of the year, with hours set by season. In 2026: 10:00–18:00 in June–August, 10:00–17:00 until 27 September, then 10:00–15:00 on weekdays and 10:00–16:00 at weekends until 10 January 2027. Christmas market weekends, school holidays and Christmas Eve have their own hours.

How do I get to Skansen?

Skansen is on Djurgården. Tram 7 runs from T-Centralen and bus 67 from Odenplan. SL ferry line 82 crosses from the Slussen area via Skeppsholmen to Allmänna Gränd, 400 meters away; during the Slussen works it leaves from a temporary pier on Skeppsbron. Every SL ticket is valid on the ferry. It is 950 meters on foot from Djurgårdsbron bridge.

Is Skansen accessible for wheelchairs and strollers?

Partly. The site is hilly, with steep slopes, cobbled stretches and long distances. Use the main entrance, where a platform lift rises from street level; the Hazelius Gate sits at the bottom of a very steep hill. Wheelchairs (200-kronor deposit) and strollers (75 kronor) are available at the main entrance, and assistants with an official card enter free.

What animals can you see at Skansen?

Wild Nordic species such as brown bear, moose, lynx, wolverine, grey and harbor seals, Eurasian otter, European bison and forest reindeer, plus old Swedish livestock breeds and small animals in the Children’s Zoo. Several are in European zoo conservation programs; zoos including Skansen saved the European bison after it died out in the wild in the 1920s.

When is the Skansen Christmas market?

In 2026 it runs on four weekends before Christmas: 27–29 November and 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20 December, Fridays and Saturdays 10:00–17:00 and Sundays 10:00–16:00. It has been held since 1903, with handicrafts, candles, sweets and seasonal food. It takes place inside Skansen, so you enter on an ordinary ticket.

Is the Skansen Aquarium included in the ticket?

No. The Skansen Aquarium, with animals from around the world such as monkeys, crocodiles, scorpions, parrots and frogs, needs its own ticket bought separately. The Baltic Sea Science Center, which shows life beneath the Baltic, and the Children’s Zoo are included in the ordinary day ticket, and children aged 0–15 enter free.
