Three facts shape everything. Snälltåget’s summer night train to Östersund, which starts the north loop, runs only on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Inlandsbanan runs only in summer — Östersund to Gällivare from 15 June to 11 August in 2026 — and its 2027 booking opens in spring. And a bike is easy on regional trains but not on SJ’s or VR’s long-distance ones.
There is no national rail pass or ticket. Plan each leg door to door in Resrobot, then buy from the operator. The 2027 summer dates were not out on 25 September 2026, so this page prints the 2026 dates as the pattern to plan against.
North loop: Stockholm to Abisko
Days 1–2: Stockholm. Spend them in the city; how many days in Stockholm has the day plans. SL’s metro and buses never take a full-size bike, but commuter trains and boats do, with limits.
Day 3: the archipelago by public boat. Take the metro to Kungsträdgården and a Waxholmsbolaget boat from Strömkajen. Almost every route goes via Vaxholm, and any SL ticket covers the boats that far, all year. Further out, top up or buy a Waxholmsbolaget single in the SL app or on board by card — our archipelago ferries guide explains the fare bands.
Grinda is a good first island: boats run there year-round, and its 9.8 km trail section starts at the south jetty (Södra brygga) — about three and a half hours’ walking. The Stockholm Archipelago Trail runs 270 km over 20 islands, every one reached by regular boats. Prefer the forest? Day 4: Uppsala. SL commuter line 40 (pendeltåg) runs there via Arlanda at least every 30 minutes. SL tickets end at the county line, so add a UL supplement for the leg beyond Arlanda. Gamla Uppsala museum is by bus 2; from October it opens Wednesday to Sunday only.
Day 4, evening: the night train to Östersund. Board Snälltåget’s summer night train at Uppsala on a Wednesday or Saturday; it arrives next morning. In 2026 the season ran 24 June – 4 October. A different night train, Stockholm–Östersund–Duved, runs daily under a Trafikverket contract that currently lasts to 13 June 2027, with options to extend — the fallback if your dates slip, once you’ve checked it is on sale for them.
Days 5–6: Åre. Norrtåg’s regional train ran Östersund–Åre in about 70 minutes in its 2025–26 timetable. Åre’s cable car (Kabinbanan) opened for summer on 19 June in 2026. For the high mountains, STF’s Storulvån station is reached by train to Duved or Enafors and a connecting transfer. The Åre guide covers the resort’s trains and seasons.
Day 7: back to Östersund. Sleep there: Inlandsbanan leaves early.
Day 8: Inlandsbanan to Gällivare. This is the trip’s big scenic day, not a transfer: 746 km, from 07.29 to 21.39 in 2026, with a guide on board and stops for meals, coffee and sights. If you bring a bike, it needs a reservation for each stretch. Our Inlandsbanan guide has the full line.
Day 9: Gällivare to Abisko. The Narvik-line train serves Gällivare, Kiruna and Abisko; no sibling source dates the leg, so plan it in Resrobot. Get off at Abisko Turiststation, opposite the mountain station.
Days 9–11: Abisko and Kiruna. Abisko National Park dates from 1909, and Kungsleden runs through it along the Abisko canyon. Bus line 91 links Abisko and Kiruna in its June–September season. Kiruna’s station is 6 km from town, unstaffed, with a free shuttle bus for every train. In Kiruna the midnight sun lasts from about 29 May to 14 July.
Day 11, evening: the night train south. One train a day runs from Narvik via Abisko, Kiruna and Gällivare to Stockholm, arriving on day 12. Until 12 December 2026, travelers to and from Kiruna and Abisko change trains at Boden; from 13 December the new contract specifies couchette and sleeper cars without changes. Swap Åre for the High Coast? Take the train to Härnösand or Örnsköldsvik and walk section 6 of the High Coast Trail. Bus 50 between the trail’s villages runs on weekdays only, so don’t plan a weekend transfer.
South week: Skåne and Kattegattleden by bike

Kattegattleden is national cycle route 1: 390 km in eight stages from Helsingborg to Gothenburg, guaranteed open 15 April – 15 October. The route organisation calls south to north the slightly easier direction and counts on 30–70 km a day. You won’t ride it all in a week, so the plan above rides five stages and lets Öresundståg carry you over the rest; it stops in most stage towns.
Bikes ride free on Öresundståg within Sweden, up to six per train, in the marked area — first come, first served. If it is full, you wait for the next train, and replacement buses take no bikes at all. In Skåne, regional buses take bikes on their racks every day from 15 June to 15 August, otherwise only on weekends and holidays; city buses and trams never do.
On day 1, carry a passport or ID card: trains from Denmark have a Swedish ID check at Hyllie. The current temporary border control is decided until 11 November 2026, so check whether it has been extended before a 2027 trip. Count back from the night train: day 9 must be a Wednesday or Saturday, so day 1 falls on a Tuesday or a Friday.
Bikes, tickets and booking
The bike rules split by type of train. Get this wrong and you stand on a platform with a bike nobody will carry.

For most visitors the answer is to rent a bike for Kattegattleden: the route lists rental and luggage transport with pickup points from Helsingborg to Gothenburg.
Booking order. Long-distance tickets are released in batches and priced by demand; SJ put summer 2026 on sale on 28 January 2026. Inlandsbanan’s 2027 booking opens in spring 2027, and every night train needs a reservation, even with Interrail — which covers Inlandsbanan fully. Book beds along Kattegattleden ahead in June–August, and if you can, avoid weeks 29–31, Sweden’s own holiday peak. Mistakes to avoid
- Planning Inlandsbanan as transport. It took from 07.29 to 21.39 in 2026. It is the day’s sight.
- Arriving at Uppsala on a Tuesday. The Östersund night train leaves on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
- Riding an SL ticket into Uppsala. Add the UL supplement beyond Arlanda.
- Bringing an unbagged bike to SJ or VR. Rent for the coast, or pack yours.
- Waiting on a jetty without raising the semaphore. At request stops, raise the signal (semafor) upright, facing the boat; in the dark, use a light. Some jetties are served only on a pre-booked trip, and timetables change four times a year.
- Tight connections off the boats. Waxholmsbolaget never pays delay compensation, so leave slack before a train.
- A tight last-day flight. In 2025, 86.9% of trains reached their final station within five minutes. Leave at least an hour.
- Booking Stockholm–Gothenburg on a closure weekend. 2027 has 12 closure weekends and four longer shutdowns, ending after week 33.

FAQ
Can you travel Sweden for two weeks without a car?
Yes, if you plan around the seasons. Trains, archipelago boats and regional buses reach everything on this route, from Stockholm’s islands to Abisko. The catch is timing: Inlandsbanan, Snälltåget’s Östersund night train and the Kiruna–Abisko bus run only in their seasons, so late June to early August is the window. Plan each leg in Resrobot.
What is the best car-free route from Stockholm to Lapland in summer?
Take Snälltåget’s night train from Uppsala to Östersund on a Wednesday or Saturday, spend two days in Åre, then ride Inlandsbanan from Östersund to Gällivare — 14 hours in 2026, with meal and sightseeing stops. Next day, continue by train to Abisko, and take the night train back to Stockholm.
Can I take my bike on trains in Sweden?
On regional trains, usually yes, free and unbookable: Öresundståg carries up to six, Norrtåg three per train. Long-distance trains are the problem — SJ takes a bike only bagged, VR not at all, and Snälltåget only on trains 24 and 25. Inlandsbanan needs a bike reservation per stretch.
