Vaxholm: Capital of the Archipelago

Vaxholm is the easiest archipelago day from Stockholm, and it costs nothing beyond the SL ticket you already have. Here is what the town is, how to get there, when the fortress is open, and what changes outside summer.

When you need this

You have a free half day in Stockholm and want to see the archipelago without a boat fare or a tour. You’re choosing between the boat and the bus, or you’re visiting in October and want to know whether the fortress is open. Or you’re driving and wonder what the car ferry to Rindö costs.

What Vaxholm is

Vaxholm is a town and a municipality (Vaxholms stad) in the inner Stockholm archipelago, about 30 km from the city. The municipality calls itself skärgårdens huvudstad, “the capital of the archipelago”. That’s a nickname the town gives itself, not an official status, but it fits: almost every boat from Strömkajen calls there. Visit Stockholm lists Vaxholm among the archipelago day trips within an hour of downtown.

The municipality covers about 70 islands, 57 of them inhabited, plus the green Bogesund peninsula. The town center stands on Vaxön, and Visit Stockholm describes its many well-preserved wooden houses from around 1900, painted in pastel tones. Resarö, Rindö and Tynningö are among the other inhabited islands, some lived on all year and some mostly holiday homes.

The town grew up around its fortress. The municipality traces a military presence from Gustav Vasa’s time until the regiment moved away in 2004, and much of the municipality is classed as a national interest for cultural heritage (riksintresse för kulturmiljövården).

Getting there: boat or bus, one SL ticket

This is the fact most visitors miss: every SL ticket, even a tapped single, is valid all year on Waxholmsbolaget’s boats between 44 jetties from Strömkajen to Vaxholm. Visitors often buy a boat ticket for a trip their SL ticket already covers.

Going out by boat and back by bus costs nothing extra, and the bus is your backup when the weather or the ice thins the boat timetable. One caution: some private boats also call at Vaxholm on their way to Sandhamn, and they sell their own tickets — an SL ticket isn’t valid on them.

You may also see an SL commuter boat, line 83, described on older pages — including, as of September 2026, the municipality’s own transport page. SL’s commuter-boat page now lists only lines 80, 82, 84 and 89, so don’t plan around line 83. Waxholmsbolaget’s boats and the bus are the routes to rely on. The fortress

On its islet in the sound stands Vaxholms kastell, the citadel (kastell, fästning) that has guarded the sea approach to Stockholm since the 1500s. Gustav Vasa ordered a stronger fort in 1548, attacks were repelled in 1612 and 1719, and the present citadel was built in 1833–1863. It is a state-listed historic building (statligt byggnadsminne) and now houses a military-history museum.

The museum is seasonal. In 2026 it opened weekends from 14 May, daily from 22 June to 23 August (closed at Midsummer, 19–21 June), and weekends again until 6 September. The next opening is the autumn half-term, 24–25 October 2026. Outside the season it opens only for special events and school-holiday activities, though groups can book all year.

A shuttle boat crosses from the town in season, and Waxholmsbolaget calls at the fortress all year. The museum is not adapted for wheelchairs, but an accompanying assistant enters free. Dogs are welcome on the islet but wait outside the museum.

Around the town and Rindö

The tourist office is in the 1880s town hall (rådhus) on Rådhustorget, designed by the architects Axel and Hjalmar Kumlien. It has maps of walking and cycling routes. For a self-guided walk, the municipality’s free digital culture walk (Kulturpromenaden) covers central Vaxön and Rindö, in several languages, on your phone.

Rindö is across the sound, reached by Vaxholmsleden, a yellow road ferry (vägfärja) run by Trafikverket. It is free, 970 m long and takes about six minutes. Two more state-listed fortifications stand on Rindö: Rindö redutt and Oskar-Fredriksborg. Don’t confuse this ferry with Waxholmsbolaget’s boats — it is a road ferry, not public transport you need a ticket for.

Outside summer

Vaxholm works all year, which is part of its appeal. Waxholmsbolaget reaches the town and the fortress every day of the year, with fewer departures outside summer, and the tourist office keeps shorter hours rather than closing.

In a hard winter, Waxholmsbolaget switches to an ice timetable with fewer, slower departures, some bookable only in advance. Check the return boat before you go, and keep bus 670 in mind as the land route home.

Going further out

Vaxholm is also the stepping stone to the middle archipelago. Grinda, a nature-reserve island, has regular boats from Vaxholm all year, several a day in summer. The ticket rule changes at Vaxholm, though. Starting from Vaxholm in high season, you need a Waxholmsbolaget ticket for the whole trip. From 14 September to 29 April, an SL ticket valid 30 days or longer covers every Waxholmsbolaget line; shorter SL tickets, including a 72-hour ticket, don’t. How do I get to Vaxholm from Stockholm?

Two ways, both on an ordinary SL ticket. Waxholmsbolaget’s boats leave from Strömkajen in the city center, near Kungsträdgården metro, and almost every departure calls at Vaxholm. SL bus 670 runs from Tekniska högskolan and takes about 50 minutes. Taking the boat out and the bus back costs nothing extra.

Can I use my SL ticket to Vaxholm?

Yes. Every SL ticket, including a tapped single, is valid all year on Waxholmsbolaget boats between 44 jetties from Strömkajen to Vaxholm, and the bus is SL too. The private boats that call at Vaxholm on their way to Sandhamn are different: they sell their own tickets, and SL tickets are not valid on them.

Is Vaxholm fortress open all year?
