The first two days of a Stockholm trip plan themselves. The third is where the season and the weekday decide everything: which boats still sail, which palace still opens, which museum is free. Here is how to choose it.

- You have three full days in Stockholm and have read the two-day plan
- You want one day outside the city centre: islands, a palace, a Viking site, a forest or another city
- You are visiting between October and April and need to know which day trips still run
- It is raining on day 3 and you want indoor options that are open that weekday

The ticket for three days
A 72-hour SL ticket starts on your first ride, not when you buy it, so buy it on the morning of day 1 and three full days fit. It covers Stockholm County: the metro, tram 7, buses, the Djurgården ferry, the boats to Vaxholm, the bus to Drottningholm and bus 834 to Tyresta. Tapping a contactless card for 75-minute singles works too.
Neither option reaches beyond Vaxholm by boat or into Uppsala County by train. For those, you need a second ticket.

Two classic trips shut down this autumn: Birka after 25 October, and Drottningholm Palace on weekdays from 3 October.
Archipelago day: Vaxholm or Grinda
Vaxholm is the archipelago on your city ticket. Boats leave from Strömkajen, in front of the National Museum near Kungsträdgården metro station, and almost all departures run via Vaxholm. Any SL ticket, even a single tap, is valid all year between Strömkajen and Vaxholm.
Grinda is the step further. The boat beyond Vaxholm needs a Waxholmsbolaget ticket in fare band 2 (taxa), sold as a 180-minute single in the SL app or on board by Visa or Mastercard. Grinda has regular boats all year, with several a day in summer, and its 9.8 km trail takes about three and a half hours on foot. Its toilets close in winter.
A 72-hour SL ticket does not cover Grinda. From 14 September to 29 April, only an SL ticket valid 30 days or longer covers every Waxholmsbolaget line.
Off-season reality: Waxholmsbolaget’s autumn timetable runs to 12 December 2026, with far fewer boats than in summer. In a hard winter the company switches to an ice timetable (istidtabell) with fewer, slower departures, some bookable only in advance. Check the return boat the day before. Lake Mälaren day: Drottningholm or Birka
These are two different days, not one: the Birka boat, about two hours each way, takes most of the day on its own.
Drottningholm Palace, about 10 km out, is reached by metro to Brommaplan and then a bus. Buses in the Drottningholm area sell no tickets for cash, so tap a card or use SL’s app. The palace is open daily 10:00–17:00 in September 2026. From 3 October it opens only Saturdays and Sundays 10:00–16:00, plus 31 October. It closes from 7 to 30 December, then reopens on 31 December and 1–6 January 2027. Birka, the Viking Age town on Björkö and a World Heritage Site since 1993, is reached by a boat from Klara Mälarstrand, by City Hall, about two hours each way. The package from Stockholm includes the return boat, a guided tour and the museum. The 2026 season runs until 25 October, with daily departures only from 22 June to 9 August and fewer days before and after, so check the timetable. Uppsala day
The train takes about 35–40 minutes. Your SL ticket does not reach Uppsala: SL tickets cover Stockholm County plus Bålsta and Gnesta, and Uppsala needs a UL supplement. Mälartåg also sells its own Stockholm–Uppsala single. Buy before boarding: Mälartåg trains and the SL commuter train sell no tickets on board, and UL buses and trains are cash-free.

Start at the cathedral, open from 08:00, then Gustavianum from 12:00. Two things older guides still promise are not available this autumn. Tyresta forest day
Tyresta National Park, established in 1993 about 20 km from the city, is Stockholm’s old-growth forest. Bus 834 runs to the main entrance, the stop Tyresta by. The county board gives Haninge commuter-train station as the bus’s starting point; check SL’s journey planner. Marked loops of 2, 5 and 13 km start at Tyresta by. No entry fee is listed, and the naturum visitor centre is free.
Dogs must be on a leash, and fires are allowed only at designated places, though camping stoves are fine. In winter the park roads are not ploughed or sanded, and cars are not allowed on them, so you walk from the bus stop. Södermalm on foot
Take the metro to Slussen and start at Stadsmuseet, the free city museum, closed on Mondays and open to 20:00 on Wednesdays. Visit Stockholm names the district’s views at Monteliusvägen and Fjällgatan and its parks, Vita Bergen and Tantolunden; route between them with a map. In summer Långholmen is the swimming spot. End at Fotografiska, open to 23:00. For the metro back, Mariatorget, Zinkensdamm and Hornstull are on the red line, Medborgarplatsen and Skanstull on the green.
Hammarby Sjöstad belongs to the same city district, but none of our guides has verified a route there yet, so it is not planned here.
Rainy-day museums
Match the museum to the weekday. Free adult admission at state museums ended with the 2023 budget, so the free options are the always-free museums and the evening slots:

What should I do with 3 days in Stockholm?
Spend day 1 on Djurgården, with the Vasa Museum, Skansen and Fotografiska in the evening, and day 2 in Gamla stan with the changing of the guard. Use day 3 for the water or a day trip: a boat to Vaxholm on your SL ticket, Uppsala by train, Tyresta National Park, or Birka and Drottningholm in season.
Is 3 days enough for Stockholm?
Three days covers Djurgården’s museums, Gamla stan and one day beyond the centre, which is what most first visits need. It leaves room for either the archipelago or a day trip, not both. From late October, when the Birka boat stops, the third day is best spent in Uppsala, in Tyresta National Park or in the museums.
Can I visit the Stockholm archipelago in autumn or winter?
Yes. Boats from Strömkajen to Vaxholm run all year, and any SL ticket is valid on them. Grinda also has regular boats all year, but they run less often outside summer. In a hard winter the archipelago switches to an ice timetable with fewer, slower departures, so check the return boat the day before.
Can I visit Birka or Drottningholm Palace in November?

Which ticket should I buy for 3 days in Stockholm?
